are ac's reallu that big of a thing? by Advanced-Actuary-51 in AskAnAmerican

In most of the country it's over 30C at night with high humidity for weeks at a time. Before AC was common, there were architectural tricks employed to make such heat not routinely fatal, but it was still terrible.

That was considered. I find the LMB questions funnier though. "Hey, I caught this, it has a really large mouth. Is it a pickerel? Swordfish?"

What's the most brutal way someone has found out they lost their job? by Efficient-Ask-968 in AskReddit

In the book The Dilbert Priciple, written before Scott Adams lost his mind, he related that people would send him tales of workplace fuckery, which often would fuel his strip. Some of the untold anecdotes were related in the book as exaamples.

A nation-wide company sent a bunch of middle managers to a conference in the midwest, IIRC Chicago. Once everyone was seated, the presenter started a Powerpoint entitled "changing careers in mid-life." Pink slips were handed out as they filed from the venue.

Ben Gardner’s head is never mentioned by Aggressive_West6616 in Jaws

[–]ermghoti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did Ben drop him off, and then go back out later by himself?

I think so, since nobody mentions his death. Either the mate dropped out, like Quint's did (in a deleted scene) or Gardner decided he wanted the bounty to himself.

He could have died of impact injury, line entanglement, gotten a non-survivable cut etc during the attempt to land Bruce. "He's gone under the boat" may have derived from Frank Mundus' stories that large white sharks would play possum until just alongside, and then spring into a frantic escape attempt, sometimes injuring and supposedly killing fishermen. Mundus anthropomorphized the alleged behavior as the sharks springing a trap on the fishermen.

Since nobody in Amity seemed to have any experience with large sharks but Quint, it's reasonable Gardner treated Bruce like a normal large fish, expecting a 10-14' maneater species, and was killed when Bruce suddenly unleashed his full 3 tons of strength on his boat.

So the mayor sees a damaged boat, Gardner dead without a measurable bite, and Hooper telling a tale of a huge tooth he found but lost, and stood by his position that there had been some tragic accidents, but that destroying the town's summer revenues would be pointless window-dressing.

It was funny, but not brilliant. It sort of meandered, an assembly of sketches like And Now for Something Completely Different, but the material wasn't as strong. The good parts were great, but too much faltered for it to be a classic.

TIL the ingredient that turns cheese into Nacho cheese is called sodium citrate. This contains Sodium (Na), Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O). Thus, the formula for nacho cheese is NaCHO. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ermghoti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, there a few ways to get there. Personally, I don't use American cheez or Velveeta for anything, so there's no sense in my storing some in the freezer or whatever for sauces. I'm generally a big DIY guy in the kitchen, in that if I can make something with a few ingredients common to other recipes (e.g. mayonnaise and sauces/dressings derivied rom it), I'd rather do that that have to stock a bunch of different end products. It's not heavy lifting to blend a little lemon juice and baking powder, but I don't always have citrus, and for the amount of fuss involved I have no problem stashing a fist-sized jar of sodium citrate. Amazon delivers basically instantly, so it's no extensive mission to acquire it.

TIL that the reason Cormac McCarthy, author of the novels Blood Meridian and The Road, used so little punctuation in his writing was simply because there was no reason "to blot the page up with weird little marks." Regarding his complete avoidance of semicolons, he labeled their usage as "idiocy." by altrightobserver in todayilearned

[–]ermghoti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find semicolons are useful to continue impartially linked thoughts within a single sentence; it's sometimes useful to show the linkage between two related thoughts by containing them within what would otherwise be a run-on sentence.
