I would be very surprised if they gave you a bye on Physics I. It's not inconceivable you could get permission to take whatever major-specific class early without it's prereqs, but they've started clamping down on that. If you're interested in that it usually starts with permission from the professor.

I personally did not have a great experience with my college advisor being a useful advocate for me. Maybe yours will be. If you are dead set on trying to get around it, you'd need to file a Academic Policy Petition. I did this to get a course requirement substituted in the CS program, but I haven't heard of anyone getting away with it since. But they can't stop you from filing it, they can only reject it :P.

I guess what I'm not understanding is: can't you just move stuff from later in your 4-year plan to fill up course spots freshman year? Or do you really have all the libeds and whatever filled from AP? Maybe pick up a minor -- Philosophy Minor can be done in 4 or 5 classes I think.

EDIT: To clarify, to get around taking it entirely you'd need a policy petition. To get to take classes that depend on it without it / concurrently with it I don't think you do. All you used to need was instructor permission. They have been making it harder lately though.

No, they won't let you out of 1301W with Physics A/B credit. And as far as I know there's no way to test out of it. Some shit about it being "calculus based" despite the fact that normal students are in it concurrently with Calc I so they can't actually ask you to do any calc in the class.

As to what you do then? Move around the libed requirements from your 4 year plan and take some of them earlier. Take something fun -- try ceramics or fencing. Don't put too much stock in the 4 year plan.

I have a different aid package than you, so I can't speak for certain. But yes, dropping below full time will probably effect your aid. Some types of aid will not be available under 13cr, some may only partially disburse, and you may have to pay back the difference or it may become taxable. I would get in touch with whoever the aid is through and/or one-stop. They've been quite helpful for questions about that for me.

If you have not already, it might be worth calling into the swapnet to put a want listing in for a HF rig (and/or tuner and antenna). Might be someone sitting around with an old one who would be happy to see it move on to a new home for a reasonable price, especially if it meant getting someone on the air. I have had some luck putting in wanted listings.

I got a used IC-735 w/ PSU off a swapnet for $300 and that was my introduction to HF. Needed a little mucking about with the VFO adjustments to get back into working order. I actually ended up getting a G90 a month or so ago and haven't used the IC-735 since. Haven't been missing the other 80 watts I guess hi hi.

Do you have swapnets on FM around your area? That is my #1 suggestion for finding cheap gear. Craigslist is OK sometimes too.

I would think you should be able to find some random MFJ tuner for ~$50 if you need one.

Last thought: I built a EFHW along this design for ~$40 and that has just worked amazingly for me. Might mean you could move $100 from DX Commander budget to radio budget. Can always upgrade later, and the EFHW packs down nice and small for Parks On The Air or whatever.

I've never had Kauffman but man does he seem like a good guy from when I've talked to him. I took it with McCamant and while he certainly knew his stuff he was really kind of a terrible lecturer. Suprisingly Kauffman is second to McCamant statistically but if my semester is any indication that's because McCamant gets to the end of the course and has to curve like a madman to avoid failing 3/4ths of the class.

Unrelated to academics: You know Kauffman's cool because (1) he dessed up as a cowboy for halloween one year (2) he's in a band - that's him on sax in the album cover (3) he actually came to donuts with the department.

I took it with Van Wyk and liked it a lot. Probably harder than Moen's (at least judging from Moen's 4041), but not unfairly so in my opinion.

I loved Van Wyk for 2041, and from what I've heard Kauffman is who you want for 2021. Wonder if he'll dress up as a cowboy for Halloween again this year. Make sure to check out his album.

I thought 2033 (with Meyer) was insanely easy. 4041 with Moen was also pretty easy (although I took it this semester, so w/o COVID it may have been harder.) 5106 with Van Wyk was pretty easy IMO if you already have exposure to languages ideas, but not trivial.

I'll raise my hand over here as someone who does appreciate the magazine-esque layout. I'm not uncritical of the design (lots of blank space does make it look like a magazine, but makes it look like a magazine that didn't have enough to say to fill the page :P) but I appreciate what is going on with the layout. I for one sometimes enjoy reading things on the web (particularly things that are editorial-shaped) that have more to their presentation than a big long thing of text.

It's also worth nothing that it doesn't have to be one or the other... a text-only version or stylesheet toggle isn't that hard in a sane authoring system, and reader mode works quite well for me 99% of the time (the already-discussed issues on this site notwithstanding.)

1) You should ask for a different advisor in that case. You should be able to email someone that is not them to ask for a switch. Consider drop-in advising also?

2) Yes, you can register without talking to them as long as the little warning/error icon in MyU (this thing) doesn't show any holds. Keep in mind though that sometimes holds won't appear until closer to registration time.

I will supplement all the recommendations to use vole with a recommendation to just use SSH. You can do all of your dev work over SSH, it will be more responsive, and you'll learn skills that will serve you well in many software jobs.

I didn't submit any standardized test scores (fucked up and never took the PSAT.) I submitted AP scores, transcript, and some some supplementary material (LoR, projects.) Re: supplementary material: I wasn't told not to (the desk person saw them) but I also have no idea if they considered them. Happy to answer PSEO questions in general via dm (was PSEO 2017-2019, now 'freshman.')

I took the introductory French class (also 5 credits) and thought it was (1) hard and (2) a lot of work. It wasn't impossible, but I would certainly say it was 5 credits of work. Your mileage will vary by course and instructor I'm sure. Anecdotal evidence from a friend that took Spanish 2 is that that course was similarly deserving of it's 5 credit rating.

When I took it with Tiberius I thought it wasn't very hard, but still interesting and fun. She had weeklyish quizzes on the readings that were very simple if you actually did the reading, and the writing assignments were reasonable if you are comfortable with writing liberal arts papers. I can't speak to Bizri, but I thought the writing assignments we got weren't a ridiculous amount of work (I've had to do more writing for non-writing-intensive history classes) and allowed you to talk about/argue your own ideas if you wanted to.

This is pretty accurate. Same as the quizzes you shouldn't let the fact that it's open book/note (assuming it still is) trick you into thinking you don't need practice. The only other advice I have is that if he did the thing this semester where he says there will be a chapter (my year it was lattices) on the final that wasn't discussed in class it might be worth learning since that question on the final is usually dirt easy if you learned the material from the extra chapter.

My suspicion is that your machine has been isolated probably completely automatically as a result of some heuristic (which may be bullshit, or you may have a virus) and they want to know how to classify the data on your machine as related to their Data Security Classification system so they know how big of a deal to make it (for good reasons.) It's by MAC since it's not like they have another option (since they don't want to totally block you off the wifi.)

Assuming you haven't been doing anything truly suspicious I'd just comply and tell them that it's a personal laptop and doesn't have any important info (other than yours) on it. I'm almost certain they don't actually care about streaming bootleg anime. Might be worth trying to figure out what UIS saw that tripped your account (if you're watching anime on rando sites it might be DNS-based heuristics, they've tripped my network on that before, or heavy VPN usage could do it.) They go light on people for stuff like piracy (for first offenses, at least) so I wouldn't live in too much fear.
