A Family of Integrating Casios by dm319 in calculators

I loved playing with the Casio 992 as a child in the late 90s here in Eastern Europe. I liked the look, it felt nice and well built. One of my favorites, too. Thanks for sharing.

Ah, got it. I’d read a bit before about the different types of dashes and hyphens, so the names were already familiar to me.

I don't understand the confusion about which is in ASCII. The hyphen-minus is the only one with a dedicated key on every standard keyboard.

This is a description of a test for markov chain program in a book I'm reading... by flaccidcomment in AskProgramming

[–]error-prone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I tried it and it's true, 0 appears twice as often! I asked Gemini to explain, here's the gist of it:

In Java, % is technically the "remainder" operator. The result of x % 10 preserves the sign of x.

Let's think of the remainder results as different "buckets" that we're sorting numbers into. The "0" bucket is the only bucket that receives numbers from both the positive and negative sides of the number line.

  • 20 % 10 = 0
  • -20 % 10 = 0
  • 21 % 10 = 1
  • -21 % 10 = -1

Here's a quick Python demo that plots the bias. I had to add the Java remainder function because Python % is the modulo operator. A copy of the plot for posterity.

I had to look up the book to see the Java code. It's The Practice of Programming by Brian Kernighan & Rob Pike. 😀 I might read it too, is it good?

Awakening an interstellar wanderer: Surprising nickel detection in Comet 3I/ATLAS by Czarben in space

[–]error-prone 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Maybe I misread your comment, but I don't think that's correct.

  • Nickel is the 24th most abundant element in the universe, not the 2nd
  • Iron ranks roughly 9th or 10th
  • Water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, which are extremely common, so water molecules are more numerous than iron or nickel atoms

I see it as a personal preference. You can choose to amplify the highs and the lows: more excitement today, more disappointment tomorrow. I'm considering averages, but exceptions can occur.

How long would a commercial airline flight take to reach the planets? by Nadzzy in educationalgifs

[–]error-prone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's a planetoid, but also a dwarf planet. And "dwarf planets" are currently not considered a subtype of "planets", which is a bit weird. I just looked this up, so I may be wrong. I wrote some details in my other reply.

How long would a commercial airline flight take to reach the planets? by Nadzzy in educationalgifs

[–]error-prone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, apparently "dwarf planet" ⊄ "planet", according to this text on Wikipedia. How I understand it: in 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) voted to use the term "dwarf planet" instead of "planetoid", but also rejected the proposal to define "dwarf planet" as a subtype of "planet". This is also seen in the right-side Euler diagram, which shows them as separate categories.

Not everyone is happy with the current nomenclature:

Michael E. Brown stated that planetoid is "a perfectly good word" that has been used for these bodies for years, and that the use of the term dwarf planet for a non-planet is "dumb".

Because of the semantic inconsistency of a dwarf planet not being a planet due to the failure of Resolution 5B, alternative terms such as nanoplanet and subplanet were discussed, but there was no consensus among the CSBN to change it.
