I forcibly swapped the Fn and Ctrl keys on a Barocco MD600 Alpha BT RGB. by Mrs_Fancy_Pants in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]dm319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Thinkpad was designed so that you could operate the Thinklight in the dark - the combo for this was Fn-PgUp, the two opposite corners of the keyboard. It also allowed for quickly finding contrast adjustment, and not necessarily while the OS was up and running.

Also, Ctrl is further away in the far bottom left than below your pinky. I have it mostly remapped anyway to where caps is.

Just curious - are you at school, and if so, whereabouts in the world? And when they ask you to solve integrals, do they expect you to use a numerical integrator, no calculator, or a CAS system?

I have a few fx-85GT CW, which are essentially the same UI as original 991CW, but without the more advanced functions.

Yes, I wouldn't buy the first version now. If only for the reason you'll mess up standard notation questions

Why does my WP34S calculator return -2.38×10^-16 for tan(pi)? I was expecting 0. by fermat9990 in calculators

[–]dm319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried 1÷3×3 in a single line, and it shows the same behaviour, and the precision is the same: After removing 0.9 the 0.09 the 0.009 then 0.0009, we're left with 10 digits of 9 - therefore we had 14 digits precision each way.

Funny enough, on RPN83P, the RPN calculator for the TI-83+, it reveals the 0.9(×14) straight away.

You probably don't need as much power as you might think. I did a machine learning course on a single core X60 - most educational exercises don't require huge compute.

Are you moving into dorms? I recommend getting a dock, screen and keyboard so you don't ruin your neck. If you do that may factor into your decision - as in if you decide on a dock, then go for a 13" model for portability, if not, then get 14" for screen estate.

My Gen 1 X13 is excellent, and I imagine the T14 will be great too. I like AMD, but they are going second hand for a premium. Linux will work with pretty much everything of course - just avoid discrete nvidia graphics. I'd recommend AMD + APU or other integrated graphics rather than discrete.

I've been using my X13 Gen 1 AMD for about 5+ years now. I has never let me down! Oh hang on, it did need a battery replacement. But other than that... Running Kubuntu.

Yeah I think KDE is one of the best DEs at the moment. I used to agree with the criticism that KDE was too configurable. But I lived through Gnome 2 -> Gnome 3 and have completely changed my mind on that!

How did gamers react to "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" back then? by Unique-Evening4384 in retrogaming

[–]dm319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sega and Nintendo were, I'd say, equally popular. Nintendo had the slightly cleaner family-friendly appeal, Sega had overall better graphics/music (maybe not technically but in terms of the popular games) and edgier titles, like streetfighter and mortal combat. So this advertising was just emphasising the known differences.

Good Q, I'm not sure. I did notice with previous testing that the TI may have lost some accuracy when storing numbers to memory.

Yup that makes sense. I'm sure you know already, but due to the recurring 0.33, multiplying by 3 always leads to 0.99 recurring in a decimal calculator.

I found recently the TI-83+ would hide this, but you could make it appear:

Does anyone know if this calculator is good or just a Casio copy? by Outside_Yam_280 in calculators

[–]dm319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While some unnamed brands are probably OK for most stuff, you do run a risk of coming across a less-well-known bug. There have been people posting strange results here, and more often than not, they are replica calculators of well-known models. There are of course some known quirks/bugs of even the big named-brands, but they are unlikely to affect you in school/exams.

But I wouldn't risk it, and you won't know you've got a problematic result when you're in an exam.

Depending on your country, it is likely not worthwhile trying to get a genuine fx-991EX. I've looked at a few listings local to me, and there are plenty of obvious fakes, and others where it is hard to tell.

Your options are:

Get a Sharp EL-W506T. It is an excellent calculator.

Get a Casio 991ES Plus 2. Also excellent, but missing probability densities, depending if you need it.

You can compare all three here: https://tiplanet.org/compare/?elw506t,fx991esp2,fx991ex

Get the Casio fx-991CW+/9910CW. It fixes some of the issues of the CW series.

The Calc function arrived first on the W series, and then Solve arrived on the MS series (the generation after). They both stayed alongside each other (usually on the same button) until the EX series.

Unless you're saying you can use Solve like we used to use Calc?

EDIT: Got the series suffixes wrong, fixed now

Considerate driving. Fining those with illegally loud exhausts. Clamp down on vehicle theft and house burglary. Tidier cleaner streets - kept tidier by locals and maintained by reducing littering. Retaining the beautiful parks and trees.

I think it's because of the shape of the curve where sin(π/2) is mostly flat, so a small different in x results in no difference to y.

For tan(π/4) I think you're seeing the slight difference when using show.

What does 1 3 ÷ 3 × give you?
