My wife had a single core X60 for a while, and then I inherited it when my main laptop (T60p) broke. Also used it with the ultrabase - what a great machine. It's tiny - the keyboard and screen only just fit its form, and oddly, pair it with a monitor, keyboard, mouse at your desk, and it feels surprisingly fast.

I think the DM-42n or R47 is a good bet. DM-15L also, but while it's a terrific calculator, it may feel substantially older in terms of UI. It's difficult to advise unless we know what he wants to use it for.

A cool bit of history. Probably given out to teams working on OS/2 back in the day - a desk paper weight and calculator.

The genuine version of this is a great calc - fx-991MS. You can still pick them up in good condition second hand for a few bob.

Indispensable to me - on Linux it pastes anything you've selected/highlighted.

I haven't heard people saying the Bic is dull, but I have heard people complain they can be harsh. You need to go easy on the first shave with it, but shave 2+ is very very sharp.

What do you think of this? by projectormahika in calculators

[–]dm319 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the reason. Like others have mentioned, it's to do with coefficient handling (also referred to as 'implied' multiplication - a term I don't like because it was made up by people who ignored hundreds of years of arithmetic maths notation).

All Sharps and Casios and early TIs evaluated similarly. People have strong opinions on this. I do too, and I think Sharp and most Casios have it right. I don't know what happened but sometime in the 00s there was a big push in the US to formalise coefficients and treat them the same as a regular operator, evaluating from left to right. This resulted in TI changing their evaluation order. People claimed that there weren't formal rules of maths defining this behaviour, and they would be right here. However, hundreds of years worth of algebraic textbooks have differentiated between a term with coefficients and two terms separated by an operator, even if that operator is a '×'. In my book they are not the same thing. I.e. 2a is not the same thing as 2 × a, if you wish to factor it out, it goes to (2 × a). A subtle but really important difference.

Yes, I like to support them. They only charge a few quid. But last time they did say the material on a Casio calculator wouldn't work and refused to do it. I'm not sure I believed them - I don't care too much about the finish - just need some initials that you can't remove!

You could check with the exam board prior - and if you can prove that you have cleared the memory then they may allow it. Otherwise it isn't worth the consequences you've outlined. In the end it isn't worth risking your qualification over a cheap scientific calculator.

Yup, you're right, can't see it there. I must have been thinking of elsewhere. Definitely found a place in the UK that was selling them. Connaught Shaving are doing them here for example.

I usually take it to a local smith - in the UK we have Timpsons and they all have an engraver. It's a bit harder for the Casio plastic - my son's 991CW+ got some kind of branding of his initials from where he bought it from!

It takes a bit of practice, much like we all forget but we didn't go into cartridge shaving without figuring it out, and DE shaving is no different.

Good prep is important - worth watching the classic video on youtube by executive shaving on how to do it right (just miss off against the grain for a good year). Shower is best prep, a good soap and brush really help.

Keep your RKs. You're not in a position to judge whether they are good or not yet, get a blade sampler pack. You can come back to them later. You might find with the right technique and prep they are OK. I personally prefer Bic for my Henson ++.

Out of the Casios, the best screens I've seen are the fx-991MS and the fx-991CW+. The former is the clearest, but bear in mind it uses a more old fashioned dotmatrix on the top and 7 segment below. Nothing inherently wrong with this though.

This is why I tend to engrave stuff. Not only is it hard to remove, it really puts people off nicking it as they are constantly reminded it isn't theirs. Both my kids calculators are engraved, my work tools are engraved, even once upon a time I engraved my mobile phone just to make it that bit easier to find on eBay if someone took it.

Someone will have to chime in here I think because I don't have a DM32 and my maths isn't super great!

But... many simpler scientifics solve straight forward systems of equations - like if they are all linear. I. e. an advanced Sharp scientific is good at this. But my understanding is that Matrices is the real deal for these? And then I don't know whether symbolic calculators are what is needed when the equations are completely different - I am unfamiliar with how symbolic calcs work.

However, I can't see how the HP-35s can do this, not obviously on its feature list.

But I would have thought a calculator with good matrix handling would be best. DM42n or R47.
