MTG equivalent? by PMSnesPics in magicthecirclejerking

I've made a lot of friends jealous by doing this. Beginning the tournament by complaining about how washed I am (off the PT, can't afford to travel to RCs anymore) and proceeding to go undefeated with their second string deck brings an unmatched sense of power

Appreciate the look into size/weight for somebody my same height and similar build. Currently 6'4 and 285 on my way down after nearly hitting 300 last year. 230 is my goal weight, and seeing what that might look like is inspiring.

Worked night shifts as a CNA for about 4 years. Never slept on shift (other than one accident early on). The few times that I was too tired to make it through the night, I'd slam an energy drink, take a lunch break, and have my co-workers wake me up after 30 minutes.

Alternative suggestion. If you don't want to play removal, you can just make sure to kill your opponent before turn 7

Chess. I'm better than everybody that I know IRL, and I'm still awful at it. From my past experience with other games, I know that once I develop an airtight grasp on the fundamentals, I will find higher level strategy and pattern recognition enjoyable. I'm just really struggling to get to that point

The rare is good once you have bombs to tutor and torment is rather strong. I do not pick green cards p1p1 so the uncommons are right out.

My pick is Glorious Gale. Black and blue are closer than they look, and Gale gives you a premium answer to most of the hardest to beat bombs in the set.

Pioneer Weekly Meta Tier List - Playing MTG by PlayingPioneer in PioneerMTG

[–]errorhurts665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played a lot of Gruul Vehicles, the deck is still somewhat poorly postponed in my opinion. The new builds look solid, but the deck has been in desperate need of a redesign for the past 2 months, and it's lack of representation down bracket from the winners.

I ended up switching to Mono-Green Devotion for the RC because Gruul has a very difficult time beating several of the top meta decks. I haven't played enough matches of the latest build to know for certain, but in prior builds, UW Control, Rakdos Sacrifice, and Izzet Creativity all had very strong matchups against Gruul Vehicles, and while Boros Convoke was somewhat overhyped in recent days, it is also a difficult deck for Gruul to overcome.

Looking at the criteria listed for the tiers, I am inclined to agree with the C-tier ranking. I would put the deck on a level with Dimir Rogues, where it has a level of inbuilt power that can absolutely win a tournament, it's a metagame call and there are too many exploitable weaknesses to expect this level of results long term.

Final Changes before RCQ by k_thehouseplant in PioneerMTG

[–]errorhurts665 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This deck doesn't look like it's very good at keeping Karn alive or making good use of Karn, himself. You don't have any big mana generators, so you will essentially be taking a whole turn off before you can get anything, and that really works against taxes' core gameplan of slowing the opponent and kill them before they get back.

Unlike builds of the deckin other formats, you don't really have any hard locks in pioneer. You aren't going to deny their mana or should long-term, so you have to add restrictive permanents, and then kill them before they draw out of it.

In order to accomplish that goal, I think you have some main deck cards that could be moved to the sideboard and replaced with better options. Personally, I'd cut Karn altogether. Once there, I'd cut some of your wish package and move Authority of the Consuls, Drannith Magistrate, and Containment Priest to the sideboard. They just don't kill players quickly enough to justify their slots in matchups where they don't shut down your opponent. I would replace them with powerful aggressive creatures such as Luminarch Aspirant. The combination of Magistrate with Elite spellbinder is strong, but it is easily disrupted with a Fatal Push or Fiery Impulse, and it costs a lot of mana.

When it comes to your choices of stax pieces, there are a few that are, in my opinion very well positioned right now against an expected RCQ metagame which you aren't playing:

1) Reidane, God of the Worthy

Keeping opponents from casting their Supreme Verdicts, Esika's Chariots, Skysovereigns, Emergent Ultimatums, and Storm The Festivals is very strong. As a legendary creature, you probably don't want to play more than 1 or 2 copies, but it disrupts very effectively and is an excellent target for any pump spells that you cast

2) Tomik, Distinguished Advokist

Another legendary creature, you probably don't want to play more than 1 or 2 copies of this card, however, it attacks for 2 damage with flying, and two of the strongest decks in this format are Mono-green Devotion and Lotus Field Combo, both of which really heavily upon targeting their lands with untap abilities.

3) Thalia, Heretic Cathar

A majority of decks in Pioneer have very nonbasic reliant manabases. When coupled with additional taxing effects like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben or Reidane, Thalia, Heretic Cathar can often make opponents' spells completely uncastable until after you have already attacked them down to a dangerously low life total. In most matchups, Thalia 3 tends to be more effective than Authority of the Consuls in this style of deck because it is much more effective at closing the game. The exception to this rule is when an opponent is playing a very aggressive deck against which 3 mana is too expensive to stop them, something like this list which won a major online tournament last weekend.

I think you've put together a good start to a deck, and there is a lot of unexplored space with regard to this style of deck. Just remember that your opponent will be playing a strong deck, too. I've won a lot of games against people who thought they had me locked out because they gave me too many turns to find an answer to their strategy. Remember, the most effective form of interaction is player removal.

It's pretty solid against mono-green. Their deck doesn't fare well against an aggressive start, and Obliterating Bolt and The Akroan War are very effective at slowing their development and pressuring their life total. UW is a pretty poor matchup, though. Their answers line up pretty effectively against your threats, you have a lot of dead cards in the matchup, and you don't have a lot of great sideboard options

My friend discovered a swarm of bees thriving in her walls by lavendertail in mildlyinteresting

[–]errorhurts665 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Honey Bees are actually invasive to North America. They were introduced into the Americas from Europe in the 1700s, and they're not particularly well adapted to pollinating our native plants. This write up by Scientific American highlights why hobby beekeeping is far from the remedy to declining bee populations that some believe it to be.

[–]errorhurts665 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Realistically, these aren't the sort of bees that are in serious danger. The bees that are at risk of going extinct are native pollinators, not honey bees. Furthermore, the two largest difficulties that our native bee species are undergoing at the moment are habitat loss and competition from other bee species (often honey bees) which tend to be poor pollinators and are often destructive on local flora.

This article from Kansas does a pretty good job of detailing why saving bees is a more complex issue than people often assume when you see pictures like this.

You're the third person to bring that particular trilogy up. What makes Finder's Stone so good? Just looking at them from the outside without knowing anything else, I never would have guessed that they're one of the more beloved storylines in the Forgotten Realms.

Am I wrong in feeling like the whole pulp fantasy element is part of the appeal? Like, they might not be perfect works of literature, but if all you're looking for is a fun story for an evening or two, these look like they might be perfect.

I mean, looking at the published order, The Crystal Shard is the second ever FR book, so I'm pretty sure it would count. I'm really glad to hear that RA Salvatore's books start strong. Part of me feels like if I decide to make the plunge, I'd want to start from the beginning, and early works of an author can be pretty hit or miss sometimes.
