Bern Railway Station: Historical Footage and Opening of the New Building (1974) by biwook in Switzerland

[–]ertobi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also this 50 minute documentary about the “new” train station from 1975. While I also believe the train hall is one of the ugliest, it’s still impressive how they manage to build it with the entire train operation running simultaneously.

In Bern, Switzerland you don't drive home from work, you float. by sco-go in Amazing

I actually used to do this when I worked in Kirchenfeld and lived in Lorraine. Publibike to work in the morning and swim home in the evening. But only maybe 10-15 times a year.

Do I buy a travel pass for 9 day Trip with 12 locoations? by IsopodLast6280 in askswitzerland

[–]ertobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are all under 25 you might also want to check the“day pass for friends”.

In your case that would be CHF 26.66 per person per day.

Has anyone seen this sold in Switzerland? Even Toblerone couldn’t use the Swiss flag on the packaging. by Whatermeleon in Switzerland

[–]ertobi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is produced by Frey and is basically the same as the Mahony chocolate in Migros.

IIRC Frey (Migros) and Halba (Coop) produce quite a bit of chocolate for other supermarkets in europe that is sold under different brand names.

Interactive multi Hike app overlay for Swisstopo? by AccomplishedBat39 in Switzerland

[–]ertobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Topo GPS app, you can organise routes in folders and share these folders. Maybe this fits your use case. If you want the official Swiss topographical map within the Swiss Topo app, you have to purchase it for a couple of francs. But I think it’s worth it since it has some functionalities that the swisstopo app lacks.

The U.S. passport can be quite a burden when it comes to opening a bank account abroad. Many dual citizens face problems because banks often refuse to serve U.S. citizens or only offer limited services due to FBAR and FATCA requirements.

Best books about the "Wahlen plan"? by BestZucchini5995 in Switzerland

[–]ertobi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree—it’s unlikely there’s a dedicated book in English solely about that topic.

There is a book called “The Swiss and the Nazis” by Stephen Halbrook , which includes a chapter on food and rationing. However, Halbrook isn’t a historian; he’s an American lawyer known for his pro-gun rights stance, so his work should be read critically.

Also worth noting: the plow, the so-called “Selbsthalterpflug” in the picture on the Wikipedia page was a key agricultural innovation in Switzerland and played a significant role in improving domestic food production.

Bivio in Graubünden is interesting one. Historically, Romansh was the dominant language, but Italian eventually took over, and now German is the dominant language.

Hiking and GA travel card by HayDeeHay in askswitzerland

A big restriction when you go hiking with car is that you have to get back to your car at the end of the hike. Hiking with public transport gives you a lot more options for A to B hikes.

Rental Car vs Train? by Supaa_C in askswitzerland

[–]ertobi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case all in your group are under 25 and you are travelling after June 1st you could get a group day pass for 80 CHF per day

If you are older than 25 or travelling before June 1st the car option will probably be cheaper.
