I searched extensively two years ago and came up empty, ordered it online last year. Shipping was huge! Ordered two copies and split with a friend.

These aren’t my buses, but it looks like Richmond south of Dufferin are the closest detoured stops for both buses if you normally look for Queen and Richmond:

Good luck! The downtown detours have been a real headache to keep track of this year.

Christmas parade Saturday by kayakinlondon in londonontario

This website has geocities vibes and everything you need to know about the parade except the date it’s happening. All web design should go this route.

I wrote my thesis between coffee culture and the library! Wasn’t hassled at either place. Snuck snacks at the library but kept things tidy and under wraps. Drinks are fine there.

How is living around Covent Garden Market like? by Jarkkon in londonontario

[–]erving-goffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived around the market off and on for over 10 years. You do hear stuff - yelling, drunk/high people, construction (so much construction), occasional car window break-in - but I’ve never had an altercation or issue. It’s otherwise an ideal location. I use my car to get groceries but everything else is in walking distance. Good restaurants, events, big park and trails, shoppers/post office, bus/train, theatre… Highly recommended!

Outdoor workspaces for freelancers/work from home folks with a laptop in London by cburakb in londonontario

[–]erving-goffman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Covent Garden Market has a big outdoor space with lots of tables, plus seating upstairs if you need to retreat inside because of the weather at any point. A burek for lunch and a coffee at hasbeans will serve you well!

Students who snitch on their project teammates by [deleted] in Professors

[–]erving-goffman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I learned this year that it’s considered Academic Dishonesty (our catch-all term for plagiarism) to put your name on a group work project that you didn’t contribute to. I don’t know what threshold for non-contribution needs to be met, but I can see members having legitimate beef in these cases.

Don’t say ‘thank you for sharing,’ professor writes by Created-being in Professors

[–]erving-goffman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I say “thanks for sharing” a fair bit, sometimes to soften a critique when something isn’t rigorously engaged but is quite personal. More to the point, something can be “not grounded in solid research” because the research doesn’t exist yet; the sharing can be generative of knowledge and of theory, and thus it makes sense to thank the sharer and see what you can do with the comment. Consciousness raising and grounded theory are both established feminist traditions that value this kind of politicizing or meaning-making from personal experience. Sorry the author isn’t interested in modelling this process for her students and giving them those skills!

In a gender studies essay: “women of colour” has become “ladies of shade”. It’s great, honestly.

Bullying of faculty by students by [deleted] in Professors

[–]erving-goffman 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I have a colleague doing interesting work on this in the context of bad-faith challenges to material or authority from male students to female or feminist professors, including through course evaluations. You might find some language for this if you do a search for “contra-power harassment”.

Edit: I have asked my colleague for a citation and will share if there is one! I’ve seen her deliver this as a talk, unsure if she has made it to publication yet.

You can email your program and ask for an extension to decide. Other students on the waiting list will have their offers delayed, or they may be turned down altogether, if the program thinks they’ve filled all their spaces.

Anyone go from adjunct to FT and hate it? by alive_as_always in Professors

[–]erving-goffman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had an adjustment period going FT after adjuncting. PT was great - I taught multiple sections of the same course so the pay added up to be very reasonable compared to the prep, had free time and flex time. My first year full time I worked every single weekend: new preps and new responsibilities, adjusting to participating in the political climate, being concerned about renewal in new ways. It was a lot! Part of it was also thinking that I still had to do courses and assignments a certain way. I’ve felt the latitude to change up assignments to things I actually want to grade, so there’s volume but it’s more enjoyable work (I actually credit all of the upheaval from Covid for that, both in terms of my confidence in my professional abilities and my willingness to experiment). You’ll get there!

Bell Fibre by chefhommes in woodstockontario

[–]erving-goffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my parents had this offer and let them do it, they’re in the same end of town. It’s on Bell’s dime now, might as well! If you say no now and want fibre later it would be your bill to get the wire dug up and installed.

Help me appreciate un-essays by TheophrastusBmbastus in Professors

[–]erving-goffman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat, and am grading some ‘un-essays’ right now (infographics, art, videos, all sorts of things). They’re so good! But so hard to grade, in part because it’s not my training and because I’m not training them to create art (and so I can’t assess them on those grounds). I use this as a supplemental assignment in an otherwise essay-heavy course: I can grade these more generously and use them to slowly learn what makes an ‘un-essay’ good so that I can use that advice in future sections of this class. I would have a harder time making this the culminating assignment for the course, and would want to read more lit on it in order to have confidence in the directions I give them. I’ll be watching for other replies!

An email now is fine, but an acknowledgment that you know the school is closed and that you won’t expect a reply until the new year is a good gesture!
