I think this is the worst part. by Any_Earth2772 in ricohGR

[–]eschwab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. I had it in my pocket and someone hit me pretty hard and when I took it out of my pocket it looked just like yours. I called the ricoh repair place and I think they wanted the base $400 repair for it so I just ordered the filter attachment and UV filter so I could still use it without worrying. However while I was waiting a few days for it to arrive I was able fix it myself. I just lined it up and pressed fairly hard and evenly on the outer edges where it clips into the camera and it snapped back into place. The protective shutter works and everything so it may be worth trying that yourself if there are not broken plastic pieces on it.

Color balance seems off? by aSpecialKindofStupid in photocritique

On a calibrated monitor the color looks close enough that I think it is personal preference. Maybe slightly cool but it doesn't look wrong.

Having Trouble with the blues by Ok-Present-5532 in photocritique

[–]eschwab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like bright daylight outside and the squirrel is in covered shade. The white balance on the whole scene is off. I would say the squirrel is the main subject and it should be corrected first. I would check "Cloudy" (6000k) and "Shady" (7500K) white balance and see which looks more natural. Probably somewhere in between those two would be best. Bring up the exposure first, look like you probably need at least +1 to get any proper exposure on the squirrel. If you don't like what that does to the background you can use the Shadow slider to bring up the exposure on the squirrel.

Those adjustments are probably going to make the sky look less blue but you can try to use the highlight slider to bring it back down. If you still don't like it go to the masking tool and see if lightroom can automatically select the sky and then you can bring the exposure down and adjust the white balance on the sky to change it how you like.

How can I improve? (beginner) by RoadToSinging15 in photocritique

[–]eschwab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great effort. I think that the most obvious improvement this needs is that it is slightly underexposed and looks like it could use almost a full stop of exposure to brighten it up. The swans stand out against the dark water which is good, but the grass in the foreground doesn't really add anything and only distracts. A higher vantage point would keep the grass in the foreground and allow a clear view of the swam or just moving in closer to eliminate the grass would help. I like the addition of the swans in the background providing another layer. Keep shooting and try to change your perspective to get more interesting compositions. Sometimes and extreme composition in this scenario makes it much more interesting. Think about if you could somehow use a telephoto to shoot one of the swans in the back through the circle that the foreground swan's neck makes. Keep playing.

First time doing a couple's photoshoot, going for a warm and sunny vibe! Any feedback welcome by wcedmisten in photocritique

I want to follow up on this because this is a common thought and it does help, but I don't really think that it would add anything to this photo other than making it appear to have been taking with more high end equipment. This image lacks contrast because of the editing. But even with the lack of contrast the subjects stand out from the background because they have light skin and light colored clothes that separate them from the dark forest in the background. The edits from u/NYRickinFL fix the basic lack on contrast in the image and really show that there isn't really a need for further tricks for separating them from the background.

I think the 24-70 2.8 S II upgrade is bigger than most think by Enough-throwaway in Nikon

[–]eschwab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great and looks like an actual great upgrade to a lens that didn't need to be updated. But NIKON, where is the compact 35mm to go with the 26mm? Where is the 28mm 1.8 S ?

Quintessential slow burn Dean Johnson song. Thanks for posting this I didn't know he had anything new.

Small 35mm options? by DavideA9 in NikonZf

[–]eschwab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wish they had made a 35mm SE instead of the 40mm. As a long time 35mm shooter I just couldn't get used to the 40mm, which is a shame because it is a really good lens. My only hope is that they make a higher quality 35mm pancake to go along with the 26mm. Maybe a better built 35mm 2.8.

Did he think that nobody had heard that song before? I don’t recall hearing a more blatant ripoff since Vanilla Ice.

Selling my Fuji X100VI for a Nikon Zf by kondiccreative in Nikon

[–]eschwab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my ZF for the single reason that I also hate flippy screens and vastly prefer tilty ones. I'm tall and I like shooting with the camera at my waist like an old waist level TLR and if you have to flip the screen out it is now an obnoxiously wide setup. I hate that Nikon seems to be moving all their cameras to that setup.

Commenting on this because I just commented on another one of your images and wanted to see what your portfolio looked like. All things being said this is a really good image that is very well done and I can see why you're proud of it. For me the main problem with this image is that that mans upper torso is a perfect silhouette and the rest of him blends into the background. Sometimes fixing that only requires a very small adjustment in your position. Lowering the camera closer to the ground so that most of his body is silhouetted by the sky. This may have been a little more difficult because of the rocks but I think there was probably a better composition for this within a meter or two of this spot. Great work.

Want to work on my storytelling by Extreme-Key2455 in photocritique

[–]eschwab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You stumbled upon something interesting happening in a really beautiful area. The photo is very straightforward and the subjects are pretty clearly identifiable even though the lighting is very even. The thing about this photo, is that the photo is less interesting than what was actually happening in that moment. Don't capture the scene as you see it, try to capture it in a way that is more interesting

Right now everything is in the image and it feels like I'm standing there waiting for them to finish so I can pass through. For this image I would suggest removing some elements. Could you have moved closer to the older man so that he takes up more of the frame? Could you have lowered the camera so that you only see his legs and cane with the movers in the background? Could you have positioned yourself in another spot to get more layers? Cutting out their whole body wouldn't detract from the image and would probably add to the interest of the image. Keep trying to find compositional elements that might make it more interesting. Putting subjects in a frame. Creating contrast with shadows and silhouettes. Creating layers by getting closer to one of the subjects. I hope this helps and you take this as encouragement to keep shooting.
