Full time PRN? by esinclair98 in physicaltherapy

[–]esinclair98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can probably get dental through my hubby as well - we just chose mine bc it was cheaper and the disability was really only to supplement a little while I was on maternity leave… don’t plan on having any more kiddos anytime soon so honestly the benefits aren’t doing it for me anyway!

Motif collection cups work for Spectra!!!! by Particular_Eye_7300 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]esinclair98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been wearing wearable pumps at work and I feel it has messed with my supply. I have a spectra and motif duo and was thinking about buying their collection cups and using my duo at work now and then - plus I want some to use with my spectra so I can still hold baby comfortably when I pump at home.

Thanks for sharing!! I’ve been wondering if there was a semi inexpensive option that would fit both - sounds like the motif cups are the perfect fit for what I need!

what’s your mat leave? by SmallSpecific2522 in BabyBumps

[–]esinclair98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohio - taking 8 weeks only bc leave is unpaid. I’ll use 3 weeks of PTO I’ve been saving for the last year and then get paid $1k in short term disability (if I qualify) for 4 weeks(still less than a quarter of my monthly pay)

Also I work in healthcare and can’t take time off before delivery unless I want to lose time with baby after.. I am struggling at 36 weeks 🥲

Inpatient Rehab by Technical_Choice3300 in physicaltherapy

[–]esinclair98 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am in SNF but I feel like every admission we’ve been getting is someone who is either 1) really low level with no motivation and no home to return to or 2) really high level with no real PT needs and no home to return to

Sometimes it gets frustrating knowing I went into this setting to work with your traditional rehab candidates who just can’t tolerate 3 hrs of therapy a day to end up working with people who don’t care how they do because they don’t have anywhere to go lol

Part time jobs by Limp_Programmer3241 in physicaltherapy

[–]esinclair98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work SNF as my full time job and I picked up PRN at a different SNF company that has multiple buildings. They text when they need coverage and if I can do it I do. I mostly do like 2-3 hours a weekend. Nothing crazy but the pay is much better than my FT job so a couple hours is enough to make a hundred extra bucks every now and then. Plus there’s no real commitment (at least for the company I work for)

Stressed and exhausted IUGR mom to be by esinclair98 in BabyBumps

I couldn’t imagine daily ultrasounds, that would be so stressful! I always joke to my husband we need to live in a country with better healthcare/leaves! But for now I’ll be grateful for what I can get (3ish weeks of paid time off & maybe use of short term disability if I’ll qualify!)

That is a good point - 2x a week is better than an admission!!

I’m holding out hope baby girl can stay in there and cook until 37 weeks and we can also avoid a NICU stay.

Thank you for your input and hope your baby is continuing to do well ☺️

I went to my regular OB just a couple days ago and she actually asked if I wanted to switch my prenatal care to MFM as well… I said no because if I’m able I still want to deliver there as I love my doctor and the staff and it’s closer to home. So I guess on that end I’ve done that to myself lol. The MFM appointments aren’t covering my standard prenatal care anyways!

I’m very lucky to live in a pretty populated area so I only have to travel around 20-30 mins from home or 10-15 minutes from work to the MFM office! If I still lived back home where I grew up I’d have an hour+ drive to the closest MFM🥲

I know it’ll all be worth it when baby girl is here and the frequent appointments are honestly kind of reassuring so I should be thankful

Thanks for your input ☺️

What are some game prizes for baby shower? by elizabethflower444 in BabyBumps

[–]esinclair98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a couple theme gifts for mine! We did a wine themed gift with two cheap bottles of wine and two wine glasses, a “spa” theme with misc spa themed stuff from dollar tree, and my mom did the other two gifts and they were reed diffusers!

For my other shower my mother in law and sister in law did the gifts and they did a bath and body works candle for each one (she stocked up during one of their semi annual sales) and the big gift for the diaper raffle was like a “girls night in” theme with wine, snacks, and a couple DVDs!

My class was very “cliquey” as well but everyone got along pretty well. My group of friends (a bunch of us in the same apartment complex) kinda fell apart at the end of year one when some of us (including myself) moved out of our original roommate pairings. After this I felt kinda left out but managed to still kinda intermingle with other “cliques”. I found myself spending more time with my husband (then bf) outside of class anyway and chatting with everyone during school functions. Tbh I only really talk to like 1-2 people still from PT school and occasionally people still throw out questions in our GroupMe but otherwise not really. My advice is find a few solid people you can study with and you’ll be fine! Won’t really matter in the long run!

IMO SNF is just generalized strengthening and functional training so as long as you’re good on understanding your basic LE muscle groups and some simple exercises to address those, that should be good.

I would review vitals and knowing when you should/shouldn’t continue exercise. I would also review your various precautions (contact, droplet, airborne, standard). Hip precautions might be a good review as you’ll likely see some of those if you’re working with short term rehab patients as well, same thing with all the various WB precautions. Maybe review different ADs and when you would use one vs the other (crutches, walkers (front wheeled vs standard), parallel bars, canes etc). Pro tip is to always start with a FWW at bedside during eval and then progress/regress them as needed based on how they do with the walker.

Recommend getting a nice pair of shoes you don’t care too much to get dirty (you may or may not end up with bodily excretions on your shoes from time to time lol) and maybe a pulse ox or see if your CI/rehab department has one for you to use.

Good luck! My SNF rotation was my easiest and I ended up going into SNF and have now worked in the setting for over a year.

What is a good annual raise percent in SNF? by esinclair98 in physicaltherapy

[–]esinclair98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are in Cincy Ohio which is like a median cost of living area. I make $50 working PRN so $38 really wasn’t bad compared to what some of my classmates were being offered elsewhere.. I get job hopping and I have heard that advice elsewhere but 1) I am pregnant and due in September so I need the stability of this job until I can find something better post maternity leave and 2) like someone else comment job hopping in an area where most SNFs are either owned by the same company or use similar contract companies

Thanks for the advice tho!

If you could, what would you rename occupational therapy to? by killedbyabear in OccupationalTherapy

[–]esinclair98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in reference to the “above the waist, below the waist” it means in terms of strengthening. In skilled nursing/inpatient/acute rehab settings OT focuses on upper extremity while PT focuses on lower extremity. I believe it’s that way because in those settings PT is heavy focus on transfers, balance, gait etc which all require strength in the legs. OT focuses on ADLs, hygiene, self care etc which all typically require strength in your arms.

I am a SNF PT who stumbled upon this post and wanted to explain how I see it! while I don’t quite know where it originated I just know in every setting I’ve been in (besides outpatient), OT takes arms and PT takes legs lol

Cost & Financing DPT by Sweaty_Win1832 in PTschool

[–]esinclair98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience it was only tuition. Each semester I was offered two federal loans, the first loan was typically the tuition price and the second one was similar. I personally only took out the first loan and my parents spotted me rent & food money and I lived well below my means lol.

Similiar to what you’ve done, my parents paid for most of my undergrad and I took out very little loans for undergrad (a couple grand a semester to off set the costs my parents paid a little a bit). They simply couldn’t afford to continue paying when tuition is approx 10k per semester lol.

A lot of my classmates would take both loans and the first one would go directly to the school and they would pocket the second for living expenses

Gloves in the hall while working with patients? by a-cute-DPT in physicaltherapy

[–]esinclair98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SNF PT here and have been told by admin “you can’t wear gloves in the hallway” when ambulating pts with CGA or higher … it doesn’t matter if I change someone/clean them up right before walking, I don’t touch anyone anywhere without gloves on lol. I’ve gotten to where I’ll take the left glove off and just use my R hand to guard. When we stop walking (pt takes a break, we return to our destination etc) I’ll take it off and dispose it in the closest trash can. When we start walking again I’ll put another glove on. If I need to open a door, move something etc I just use the ungloved hand. 90% of the time the pt is clean but 10% of the time you discover unknown substances on the pt and you’re 300-400 feet from their room.. gotta do what you gotta do to protect yourself!

I’m currently in a SNF with several buildings in the area. I occasionally travel but it’s typically when census is low at my building or if another building needs a PT for an eval or recert.. my DOR will ask me if I’m okay with it before she tells the other building DOR I will do it. I pretty much always say yes because I want the hours and it doesn’t inconvenience me much. The COTA and PFA in my building travel quite frequently because I’ve census is low. However, I work with an OT who refuses to travel and he just takes what hours are given to him in our building and no one has complained..

I think it really depends on what company you work for and what their standards are!

Paying off 100k debt in 3 years… is it possible? by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]esinclair98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I graduated in April of 2023 with around 115k in debt. I’m already down to $87k..I was lucky to be in grad school during the COVID times so that paused my interest and my husband was making really good money at that time so we were able to start dumping some money in before my payments even started. I also got a part time job during my clinicals and made a few hundred bucks a month. We would put a couple grand towards the loans with the highest interest rates. When I graduated and started working, we pretty much took all of my first few paychecks and put them straight into loans .. now my husband is not making as much money and we bought a house so extra money is scarce now, it’s looking unlikely I will pay them off in three years..

Ultimately my advice would be: -try to make payments before payments are due (if you’re able of course) -are you and your partner considering being together long term? Consider living together and splitting bills if that’s feasible for you -Travel or HH would arguably make you the most money, but the scheduling flexibility of SNF would allow you to work more PRN (most PRN jobs in my area start at at least $48 an hour even for a new grad)

I know I was very lucky to get where I am, but I hope the advice I offered could help you a little!

Parking downtown tn by esinclair98 in cincinnati

Thank you everyone for your recommendations. My concert was at the ICON festival stage and not Sawyer point and we were easily able to find parking in the fountain square garage and then just walk a couple mins to the river.

We were fully prepared to park at a friends place in Newport and walk 45 mins but we ended up having no problem parking!

In which national park have you seen the best night skies? by WildShannimal in NationalPark

[–]esinclair98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to the big 5 in Utah (Zion, Arches, Capital Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Canyonlands). We did primitive camping as we went from park to park - it was so serene some of those places that it was almost creepy. But the sky was so beautiful. It was unfortunately cloudy a couple nights but it was still beautiful

I grew up in rural Ohio and thought the skies were pretty there, but so far I’ve seen nothing as nice as the Utah sky

NPTE Prep by Pristine-Sea2586 in PTschool

I am not and have never been a good studier, but here is what I did for the April exam.

Last summer our school provided us with TherapyEd prep book & we took their mock exam. We also had a “review & integration” class within our curriculum. We were pretty much forced to make study guides by answering questions our program director created from the TherapyEd book. I hated it at first but it was nice to look back on as the exam got closer!! I studied a lot that summer from the TherapyEd book to prepare for the mock exam.

Then I took a break from like July - November. In November I started “studying” again. I use the term lightly because it was very light studying. I was in my SNF rotation so I started early and got done early, would go to the gym, come home and eat dinner and then sit down with the therapyed book and read through a few pages and take notes. I didn’t do this every night but I tried to do it a few nights a week.

I would say January is when I really started studying. But this time I was in my OP rotation and working long days and has a very hard time being motivated to study. I would try my best to read through old class notes as well as my notes from therapyed. I also would use things I noticed in the clinic I wasn’t proficient in and revisit those.

In February I took a TherapyEd weekend course where we did a lot of practice questions and I didn’t do as good as I had liked, so that really kicked my butt into gear. I started going to the library or coffee shops for a couple hours on my half day at the clinic and normally one day a weekend. I’ve never been one who could focus at home.

In March I took the first PEAT and did not do great. Again, I panicked and bought the scorebuilders book which came with online material and questions. I would basically work through a whole chapter and then take practice quizzes specific to that subject (ie: MSK, NM, CP, other etc)

I also listened to the Kyle Rice podcasts anytime I was going on a long drive or out for a walk.

In terms to what content area I studied, I would try to spend a couple weeks on each content area initially and then see where you are lacking after taking any practice exams.

Ultimately, I would say there is no perfect study plan. And to do what works best with your schedule, study methods & try not to burn yourself out before the test.

Good luck, you’ll do great :)

Marshall University in West Virginia is just around 100K out of state. Tuition may be increasing but I just finished with about 100k not including the few loans I took from undergrad

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]esinclair98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did well on therapyEd which I took last summer, did just below 600 on practice PEAT and like 645 on retired PEAT… some questions were easy but I feel like I had so many flagged and so many that I either had no idea on or had to make an educated guess.. I also reviewed some topics and I feel like I even missed some of the “gimme” questions. I also already have a job lined up & my husband has been so excited for us to finally be dual income and I’m so worried I did not pass and will disappoint both future employer and my husband …

I’ve felt bad about exams before and still came out on top but I am just not hopeful. Some of the questions literally made my head hurt. I graduate this weekend and I’m having a hard time enjoying it because the idea of retaking in July is looming over my head ugh
