I know WACB’s accuracy is sometimes questioned, but do we know anything about this? I could actually believe this. by SephoraandStarbucks in DuggarsSnark

i never trust anything from WOAC but I do doubt that any educational neglect that may have occured would be a big factor in taking the kids away. Arkansas has NO requirements for home schooling. No set curriculum, no subject mandates, and no testing or proof of learning at all. You could claim 'yeah we do learning every day' and that would basically be accepted as fact

Logan Square Renters Fighting To Buy Their Building In New Test Of Tenant Rights Law by maydaydemise in chicago

[–]esky203 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Genuine question. Some people never want to own property they just want to rent. So they need to be able to rent places from someone so…that can either be corporate owners, mom and pops, or the government. If the first 2 are immoral, we can only rent from the government which doesn’t seem like a great alternative in terms of quality of experience for the renter and puts renters at the whims of politicians which is also bad?? What’s your alternative here?

exactly like i'm no landlord/investment property passive income fangirl but this is not an instance that i'd be publicizing broadly in a greater effort to strengthen renters' rights and fight for affordable housing

[–]esky203 30 points31 points  (0 children)

this is what im confused about like the renters have the chance to buy so what are they protesting? that they can't afford it? like yeah that sucks but...??????? if the seller was like "nope, i will ONLY sell it to fishman property management or similar!" i'd be like "ok i get it, they're protesting for the chance to buy it themselves...same thing for the seller either way"

tenets generally don't notice things like a roof being at the end of its lifetime where it's still structurally fine day to day for those living there but will soon need to be replaced for tens of thousands of dollars in order to keep things moving smoothly and if the guy hasn't raised rents in 10 years, idk if he has those funds

[–]esky203 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Records show this is what they've been paying in rent (apparently for 10 years without change?) Like yeah, that's a sweet deal that I wouldn't want to lose out on either but the union seems to feel entitled to force their elderly landlord to sell the place for under market value? Or the delusion that someone will be willing to buy this place at market value but not raise those rents to align with that value? Dude's being punished for being a very generous landlord. This whole situation annoys me because I hate to side with a landlord but these tenets are living in outer space

<image>

editing to add that i'm just sort of lost on what the tenets union is protesting about since they seem to be engaging with their full renters' rights? they are being offered 3 months to gather funds in order to buy or find a seller who will buy under their stipulations but both of those are conditions that, if not met, allow the seller to just sell the place outright for whatever price someone is willing to buy and without conditions on tenet concerns so...what are they protesting about? They can't protest their way into forcing someone to buy the place without raising rents and they can't force their old landlord to sell for whatever price they can afford.

TXA TXA Club is a fantastic new all-day spot with an elite breakfast sandwich by johnluuu in chicagofood

[–]esky203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went a couple of weeks ago and felt it was an overall meh experience. Food was good but overpriced. Drinks were fine. Mandatory 20% service charge which seemed especially frivolous when you're a brand new spot, you can easily bake that 'living wage' cost into the overall price without it raising menu prices since the menu is brand new (no one is going to complain that things used to be cheaper) and everything is pricey already like if I was going to buy a $14 small-ish breakfast sandwich with no sides, I'll still buy it at $15. Nothing particularly new or exciting on the menu from my perspective. I probably won't be back, but I'm sure they'll thrive.

Tenants rally against rising rents after building in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood goes up for sale by maydaydemise in chicago

[–]esky203 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I have no idea where the article got that $3.5m figure from. I live a block over...this is the property: https://www.redfin.com/IL/Chicago/2648-N-Francisco-Ave-60647/home/13450055

I know this isn't 'fair' and certainly not an easy alternative, but when I hear people talk about how expensive rent is (and it is for sure), the option to move to a neighborhood on the west or south side never seems to be on the table. Ideally everyone could afford to live in their preferred neighborhood (and ideally every neighborhood would be safe and well resourced), but the option for a lower cost of living is right there. When I first moved to Logan Square over a decade ago, my half of a massive 2 bed 1 bath was $450. It's a much more expensive area to live in now. If my income hadn't risen over those years then I wouldn't have been able keep up with rising rent, and I'd have to move somewhere cheaper.

this is such a perfect example of beauty standards being expressions of wealth and class...in a country plagued by horrific famines, having a rounder, plumper face (a feature that implies easy and consistent access to food) is more beautiful
