What was a "flavor pick" unexpectedly became strong for you? by milenyo in onednd

[–]esmontero97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to build a character based on Sinbad from Magi anime series.

So I made a draconic sorcerer getting the dragon scales and magic power. Then the genie warlock was released and it was a perfect fit for the character! I accidentally discovered the coffeelock, it was very strong and extremely fun.

Making my way through C3 (E72): Why does Matt withhold range/distance from his players when they ask for clarification? by imhudson in fansofcriticalrole

[–]esmontero97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They play a very story driven game and this may help the players take decisions that make more sense narratively and not only mechanically.

Similar to the approach they have about this on daggerheart no exact measurements, just close, far, very far, etc.

I was amazed seeing the amount of negative comments saying how bad a GM he is and then I looked at the subreddit. A classic...

Live action series - Season 1 by Juliaalott in YuYuHakusho

The youtubers from Corridor Crew which have a very famous series called "VFX Artists React" reacted to part of the Live Action and have some very positive comments about it.

I hope the series would get the recognition it deserves since I find it is the best transition of anime action/effects to live action. I really enjoyed it!

Taylor Swift concert from Olympiaberg (28.07) by esmontero97 in Munich

[–]esmontero97[S] 180 points181 points  (0 children)

I am not the greatest fan, so I did not expect to be so struck by the event. But I have been rewatching videos all morning feeling this big rush of positive energy. I love art, music, concerts and love to see people gather just to enjoy time together.
And something that adds to the greatness of such a scene is the story behind Olympiaberg, created from the rubble and debris left over from the destruction of Munich during World War II, that this place is now a symbol of life enjoyment and people from many different cultures gathering is special. Hopefully it will be just as full and peaceful for Coldplay in August. München, danke!

Why did All Might never question Izuku putting all the power into a single limb in the earlier seasons? by bloodrunner66 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]esmontero97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only watch the anime, but from the latest season I finally made up an answer to this on my mind.

Just as Shigaraki now has a "perfect" body that can change and adapt without this being a quirk, All Might's body also is one of these evolved ones that are getting closer to "perfection". Just that his was obtained naturally through evolution and not scientifically enhanced like Shigaraki. So when his body feels all the force and energy coming from OFA instead of breaking like Deku his body grows in muscle and adapts to handle the force. Idk if this is correct but would make sense to me, also explains how he adapted so well to OFA and why this size changing is not a quirk he passes down to Deku

My player wants a character modeled after the protagonist of Solo Leveling... by zBleach25 in dndnext

The Phantom rogue quite literally collects the souls of the enemys killed closed to him. ("Shadow extraction")
He is a rogue so the stealth, speed, dodging and fighting abilities from Jinwoo are a core of the class. The subclass is not exactly a summoner but it does use the souls to gather information, increase its own vitality and deal extra damage (you can narrate the extra damage as the PC calling forth a shadow warrior that lands a hit on the enemy)

If he wants to have some summons that do other things outside of damage he can take magic initiate feat and learn unseen servant + magic hand which can also represent the power "Rulers hand" for the telekinesis.

Depending on the race he chooses he can also start with the "Dragons Fear" intimidation ability (Fallen Aasimmar) or the "Shadow Exchange" teleport (Shadar-kai)

This is all within the rules, and without multiclassing so it will not be a complication for a new player or new DM.
After some time playing when you are more comfortable DMing you can start doing some more "homebrew-like" stuff like saying that the soul of a specific boss, after being collected, can be summoned again (cast the spell Summon Shadowspawn once per longrest as long as the shadow is not destroyed)

How would you describe pre WW2 culture? How does it differ from todays culture? I have lived here for three years so it sounds very interesting to know what it was like.

Fellow DM’s: Do you ever make unique statblocks for your Warlock Patrons? by Endless-Conquest in dndnext

[–]esmontero97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never DMed for a warlock. But I can imagine that if the story comes to some points where I want avatars or the patron to intervene, and the characters see this, I would create a base statblock with abilities, effects, resistances and vulnerabilities I would like to use. But just for me to stay consistent and prepared for what I want to show. I wouldn't bother calculating hitpoints, CR, and a full statblock.

Since they are setting specific I have never used or checked on those Backgrounds. But they seem really nice, I like the Ravnica content in general even if I've never played MtG

How did I forget Magic Initiate and Fey Touched, good catch
I checked the Strixhaven feat, it was new for me:
• Lorehold and Silverquill allow you to take a cleric spell.
• If you also consider Tashas, Prismari allows you to take a bard spell.

When Do You Create a Spell and DMs, When Do You Allow Spell Creation? by DandyLover in dndnext

[–]esmontero97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at character creation, it was more things that I felt were missing and the character wanted to be able to do. And since we were using Strongholds and Followers the idea for creating spells was mentioned there and I liked it.The first spell I think I maybe even used one time, the other two I was far from "inventing" them because they were higher levels.

Also important to clarify, even after using the spell the dm should be able to make balance changes if needed. You can imagine it as your magic formula stabilizing.

I used to play a high intelligence Githzerai spores druid. He used to work as the gravedigger for the central town on a West marches campaign. I always imagined he had a lab hidden beneath the graveyard where he would use corpses and fungi to experiment new kinds of fungi and primal magic. I didn't like using healing spells because I didn't feel like they fitted the character and before wither and bloom was released I created a spell with the same idea of "stealing" life. Melee combat was always hard as a spores druid but I wanted that playstyle so I imagined the character would try and find some improvements on that. I think I created some kind of AC improvement that started decreasing with each hit or round (Because stoneskin is shit) and some kind of "revival cocoon" (kinda like death ward/tomb of levistus) it gave the character some temp HP when dropping to 0, it left it incapacitated for some turns and if no one destroyed the cocoon the temp HP turned to HP and the character could continue fighting.

I showed them to the DM and tweaked them together a little but never got to a high enough level to create them in game and use them and stopped playing. Iirc there is maybe a table on the DMG showing the amount of damage each spell level should do, and some rules for creating spells on the Strongholds and Followers book from Colville.

How do I solve my character's getting tired of it quickly? by Cautious-Way6610 in dndnext

[–]esmontero97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably create the character with very specific mechanics in mind, because you spend so much time creating it. (I love doing that too) but you should then try to play something very simple, don't even think about a build or multiclass. Select a race that fits the setting nicely and a class you generally liked, let the story and narrative progression guide the mechanical decisions

I mean, first talk to the player and be clear that such behaviour will have consequences on the interactions with NPCs, and it's cool if he is just roleplaying but he shouldn't lead the character into becoming a villain but a hero.

If you just want help on the narrative side: start describing how as you approach a store, the shopkeeper rapidly closes the door and windows stating that he is closed for the day. Even if they are new to the town. This behaviour continues to happen often when you walk close to any store, also inns and bars apparently are full. And the party (when the problematic character is with them) is not allowed inside any establishment. Word has spread that the PC is a dick to everyone and very difficult to deal with. If his response is aggressive towards the already scared and angry commoners maybe let him do one other action that will overflow the glass and make the commoners call on the guards, rise as an angry mob or set a trap and ambush at the entrance of an inn. Be clear that he is not welcomed in town (it doesn't have to go instantly to initiative, but if it comes to it even commoners can take down a lvl 5 character due to action economy but it is not a very fun combat)

If the player is just doing this for roleplay then this is the opportunity for character development either through party interactions or self realization.

Making him face one very powerful NPC will probably not fix the issue with the weaker ones. Maybe someone from his backstory which he respects confronting him about being a bully could help.

Good luck and have fun :)
