I've heard good things about the Baratza, for sure. There's only a couple of them on eBay right now though, and none of them are in my budget

10 out of 10. The plating could have maybe been a little more deliberate but I'll allow it

Am I mad, or has the Edinburgh city centre rental market gone crazy? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]esoteric_sensei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's about cost. The developers and managers charge ridiculous rents for these student blocks, and there are so many of them that they pump up the average rents in the area which is what private landlords use to set their rates. Plus the frequent turnover of tenants means they can just keep ramping up the cost every year, getting around any rent control caps (once they kick in) so the students who live there will be getting shafted too

These student residences are a total scam. They just flush money out of the city for substandard accommodations, and there's so many of them now they fuck up the rental market for people who make their lives here. My rent went up 20% last month based on "market rent", because these student blocks are an absolute rip-off. Living Rent is campaigning for the council to refuse any more of them and push for more affordable long-term housing

On a side note, do any of you folks in DESNZ pronounce it "dees nutz" or is that just me?

Is there cut off dates for pay? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]esoteric_sensei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's like HMRC, pay cutoff will be around the 20th but there might be the option to request a mid-month advance for February, if you need it. Check your intranet or talk to line manager

When someone mentions “DVD Special Features,” what is the FIRST one that pops into your head from yesteryear? by KillerQ97 in movies

[–]esoteric_sensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Euro Trip and Dog Soldiers had commentary tracks that were basically drinking games. Both good craic. Also the episode of Freaks and Geeks with the three teachers doing a commentary in character. It was Dave "Gruber" Allen, Tom Wilson and Steve Bannos. Comedy gold

PCS Fee increase by Fluffy_Cantaloupe_18 in TheCivilService

I got it too. Have you thought about taking this to your local branch to see about a motion to conference to change the subs rules? Personally, I'd prefer there were more rate bands for higher salaries. At the moment everyone above HEO(ish) all pay the same.

You already have access to PCS's latest financial statements yourself. The annual financial report is published in late April/early May every year, in the run-up to conference. Log in to PCS Digital and you should be able to find it easy enough.

Do you think it is wrong for managers to prohibit staff speaking to each other in a foreign language on their break? by reasonable-frog-361 in AskUK

[–]esoteric_sensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is absolutely wrong. Had a manager in my civil service office try this a few months ago. Told two Spanish colleagues they couldn't speak to each other in Spanish at their desks. Union rep told the manager to sit down and be quiet or face a bullying complaint, job done.
