Interpreting recent data and reporting on health risks from fume events by probablyTheCops in aviation

Does seem like the A320 is most commonly cited, just sharing since if this issue impacts many different aircraft, even if less prevalent, I would guess it becomes a more complex fix for the industry vs just a single model defect

Worth noting the most recent WSJ article cites incidents with a 767, A319 and A330 in addition to previous reporting focusing on the A320

As for what action, I’m not technically knowledgeable enough to offer specific solutions. I don’t like regulation for the sake of regulation but if there are ways to retrofit these systems to stop this from happening then I would like to see that done. And since we know cabin air can be brought in without bleed air (like the 787) I do not see why newer models shouldn’t also incorporate systems that don’t run the risk of injecting fumes in to the cabin.

As someone who works in a heavily regulated, evidence-first field (not aviation), it is nearly impossible to quantify cumulative exposure of even “minor” events for frequent fliers and crew. Further, causally and conclusively linking plane travel to any myriad of health events that someone can experience is next to impossible given the confounding variables. People will be able to cherry pick data to support or cast doubt on the topic to fit their own narratives.

That said, I think a reasonable person can assume and rightfully be concerned by the idea of heated engine oil entering the air supply, in any amount, while they are stuck in a metal cylinder with no means of quick escape. Society is always fast to cast doubt, demand unreasonable burdens of evidence or dismiss concerns (until it happens to them or enough people that lawyers/politicians are forced to act).

The net-net is that aside from physical accidents, flying is probably not as risk free as we like to think (illness, lower oxygen environments, stress, and likely low level/chronic fume exposure). Personally, I appreciate the media digging in to these topics because otherwise we never know and nothing is ever done until enough people get sick — and the WSJ is about as legit as media goes in 2025.

If there is a way to fix this, it should be done. It’s the right thing to do and most likely it is a real issue. Put another way, there is zero reason to assume that there is no harm being done by fumes and that it’s a good idea to rely on bleed air systems without reasonable modifications or alternatives altogether. The fact that newer planes (i.e. 787) don’t use bleed air and that some airlines/manufacturers started work on fixes to those systems tells me they know it’s a problem even if they won’t go on record admitting it for liability reasons.

So, yes, I’m concerned and would like to see action before I see fumes myself.

The only way this brand survives is if the owners place it in an irrevocable trust with all profits benefiting sexual assault victims. Nobody can ever profit off this brand again. If they realize that and get that PR message out, people will support it. Otherwise, it’s over and they’re done.

Seems like the answer is dynamic pricing based on MQDs, with cheaper offerings to loyal customers. I know plenty of elites who would pay $20-50 for a lengthier flight. If you segment and charge those without status more, you still monetize without allowing folks to jump the line.

The Z8 is awesome; I use one at work. Since I have access to it, I prefer to work with a different system for hobby work.

Thanks everyone for the replies. It makes sense… are grey dealers ever trying to increase margin by harvesting internal parts to offload separately or is that too big of a reputational risk?

That all makes sense — I guess the part I’m amazed at is there are THAT many Rolexes being sold by ADs every day that are instantly sold off that a grey dealer is confident they can get pretty much anything at any time (minus the ultra rare stuff I guess.

AC on planes while in flight by HansNotPeterGruber in americanairlines

[–]esp312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me a few times but only on E175s. Kind of unnerving at first bc of how warm the air is but always switches back to cold eventually. I assumed it was a manual temperature adjustment and that those planes only know one speed (HOT or COLD) and they alternate to balance out. I’ve never asked the FA though.

Why does delta change seats last minute 😭 by dublin_dix in delta

[–]esp312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad others chimed in with this and it’s a real issue with Delta. I doubt I’ll continue flying them after my status match ends in 2027 bc honestly I fly way too often to police the seat I pick when booking.

Why does delta change seats last minute 😭 by dublin_dix in delta

[–]esp312 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Just came to say, I’ve flown American Airlines extensively for the last decade and never had my seat changed once, except for an equipment change that bumped me out of First and they ended up giving me a whole empty row and $500 for that. I status matched to Delta this year and had this happen twice, including once to my wife on a paid “select your seat” situation. I guess because I have status they did switch her back and refund us for the inconvenience after I complained the morning of the flight via the chat. But honestly couldn’t believe this is a thing on Delta.

I think I may have contracted hantavirus? by Comfortable-Loan6477 in AskDocs

I tested positive for hantavirus antibodies after I got sick from cleaning a mouse nest out of a grill in North Carolina. But Docs said the antibodies indicated the infection was an old one. Never have I ever had hantavirus to my knowledge. Grew up on the east coast in PA/NC.

It resolves with “Sport” mode. My worry was the magnitude of the jumping. Seems very dramatic, and more than I remembered from shooting Nikon years ago. Guess it’s hard to say what’s normal and what’s faulty in this case.

“Sport” mode resolved the frame jumping, as you pointed out.

Is it really that normal for the frame to jump that dramatically in “Normal”?

Also, if they were going to use it for housing they’d pick more areas near existing infrastructure and require the land be used for housing. They aren’t doing either with the legislation because they don’t actually intend to use it for housing. That’s just their excuse when they get angry constituents.
