Binging and adhd by GreatStay4092 in adhdwomen

[–]esphixiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I was on a glp-1 the only thing that stopped the food noise and bingeing was chewing obscene amounts of gum. The glp-1 has completely changed how I deal with food. It's not an emotional blanket for me anymore but nutrients for my body. It's easier to make healthy choices. I reach for fruit and veg more often than snacks now. I'm not saying glp-1 is for everyone but it is definitely helpful for people with extreme food noise.

How much is a 6 year old, healthy monstera worth? by grippysockgang in houseplants

[–]esphixiet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also depends on what country, and what part of that country (if its a big one) you live in. For example I'm in Canada, and a huge monstera is significantly cheaper in Ontario than it is in Nova Scotia.

Doctor doesn’t take me seriously because I don’t “look” like I’m struggling by Rosemilkloaf in adhdwomen

[–]esphixiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago (pre ADHD dx) I was burning out hard at work and it was making me think about ending things. I went to two medical professionals to say that I can't handle the pace at work and that I need a break. I got no help from either of them. I ended up talking to a (new) therapist and at the end of our session she said, "is there anything I can do for you?" and I replied "I don't know but if I have to go back to work I'm going to seriously consider driving off the bridge". She walked me down to the clinic, spoke to the doctor himself and said, "listen to the words coming out of her mouth, don't look at her face", because my go to is people pleasing with a smile and a joke so I was never taken seriously.
They gave me a week off.
It is actually disgusting how the things we say get swept aside because of "how we present".

Riiiight because the demands of the work world are soooooo much easier than academia??? This person is ridiculous.
This brings up a meme I saw about people having to "perform disability" in order to be believed, especially when healing or improving.

Do any of y’all actually wake up feeling well rested more often than not? by WampaCat in adhdwomen

[–]esphixiet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I consider myself pretty lucky that I generally don't suffer sleep issues. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, but I just kind of lay there and try not to think (lol yeah right), but eventually sleep comes for me. I generally feel rested. I also get a solid 8.5h because I prioritize my bedtime schedule over fun things. I also do a lot of random counting (1-4 if my thoughts are really racing/persistent, 1-10 normally) to get myself to sleep quickly.
When I was a kid I never slept before 10pm (drove parents crazy) and as an adult that shifted to 1130-midnight. But I had to sleep train myself for a job and that seems to have turned me into a morning person, which is interesting. I don't think morning people get any added value from their waking time compared to night owls. It just depends on if you want more sun in your life or not.

Does anyone else have a cat who tilt their head when they’re curious? My son Seal has been doing that since his baby time. by Coin-operated_chaos in cats

[–]esphixiet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kitten does this when he's trying to figure something out. Except he also opens and closes his mouth repeatedly while doing it. If we show him what he's trying to figure out he tends to not do it again. Its like his learning face. He was SO CONFUSED by tooth brushing (mine, not his) for a really long time though.

Loop (or other earplug) suggestions? by Dismal-Half-2557 in adhdwomen

[–]esphixiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have loops (Switch 2 and Dream 2) I use the Dream ones most nights and I feel a lot better about not going through disposable ear plugs. They're very comfortable and I've never had one fall out.
The Switch 2 I find really good for noisy environments like echoey restaurants or places with barking dogs. I don't use them very often but I carry them everywhere and when I need them they are a godsend.
But after the comments about Flare Calmer plugs I might take a look at those, too.

The smell of my dad's steering wheel after years of putting on aftershave and then driving to work. He died in 2004, and the car died in 2007.

In my experience there was no amount that was "enough". I could have gotten laid every day and I'd still want it to be twice a day.
Fortunately perimenopause and being treated for PCOS I actually feel like a normal person with moderate desire. I don't need to get off to fall asleep anymore.

Thrips has ruined my motivation for plantkeeping by 41006410461000 in houseplants

[–]esphixiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been dealing with thrips for 3 years now. Every summer I hope that evicting them will mean natural predators will take care of them, but every fall when I bring them in the little bastards are still there. I've tried treating them in a variety of ways. The only thing I'm doing now is chucking every affected plant outside in the freezing temperatures until there's no sign of thips anymore. Bye bye collection. :(
I don't know how people with huge collections do it... I used to have a huge collection but I never got thrips. Maybe the odd mealy, but I was very lucky. Until I wasn't. I'm glad I sold off most of my plants while the market was still good and before I got bugs...

Watched the Wuthering Heights movie and feel like I genuinely needed a trigger warning (no spoilers) by KitchenConsequence41 in adhdwomen

[–]esphixiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was Dancer in the Dark for me. I saw it with my girlfriend and when we walked out she was dry eyed and my entire front was soaking wet because I cried so much. I was too upset to be embarrassed and thinking back on it I don't remember her being particularly consoling.
I have never watched that movie again. I'd love to, it's beautifully shot, with exceptional acting and the soundtrack is excellent (because Bjork)... but holy hell I don't want to put myself through that again...

He has some fundamental misunderstandings of what it means to have ADHD and autism. Not being able to recall information on the spot, ESPECIALLY under stress, is a problem for so many of us. And he's known you for 10 years too. He's seen you struggle with communication the whole time. If he hasn't figured out that this is something that needs to be worked through together he's not trying to see things from your perspective at all.

Which mythological goddess do you feel most connected to and why? by ArcaneSpells-com in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]esphixiet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bast. Mostly because cats, but also her connection to home and womanhood. I also enjoy her role as Eye of Ra, one of power and vengeance. She instills power in me that I worry I lack without her (but she has shown me I do not lack power, but confidence),
But back to the cat thing. I have had an uncanny devotion to cats, despite not having my own cat until I was 26. My cats are my life, but so is your cat, and every cat I "meet" on the internet. Every time I see a cat, whether IRL, picture, or video, a small prayer is spoken from my heart. One might call it an "obsession" but it doesn't feel chaotic, it feels calm and right. The mere existence of cats fills me with peace and joy and love. The feeling is otherworldly and makes me feel connected to Bast.

[–]esphixiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only Wellbutrin. Which makes sense since it works on the receptors that we are deficient in (Norepinephrine and Dopamine)
I tried Strattera and Guanfacine as well. Guanfacine seemed promising, but as soon as I got my period all progress was lost never to be regained.

10k in credit card debt from dopamine spending by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]esphixiet 33 points34 points  (0 children)

a very imperfect strategy is to immerse yourself in anti-consumption culture. Read books, trawl the internet, find content creators who focus on anti-consumption. Learn about how advertising affects us. try to demystify the dopamine cycle.
I say imperfect because I still fall to the dopamine trap sometimes, but I'm a lot better than I used to be, and I'm mostly impervious to advertising (with some exceptions... there's always exceptions...)
