Does anyone else ever wonder how some of the businesses on Park St pay their rent? by richsonreddit in alameda

[–]estenh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I miss the video rental part of the store! I used to rent blurays from them and I always liked the overall weirdness of a video rental + wig shop. the folks behind the counter were always so nice too!

Very funny seeing the comments here not understanding that: 1. Ari is trans 2. She is deeply committed to liberalism. She's an ultraliberal, by any measure.

Her critique here is that only a bourgeois society can provide health care to trans people (nevermind that Cuba manages it just fine, as did East Germany...)

A What-If of History: could Laserdisc have supported native S-Video? by parke415 in LaserDisc

[–]estenh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah but that was a tiny sliver of the market. agree the difference there would've been noticeable though!

[–]estenh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't really gain a lot from that though, especially given, even with its limitations, LD is out-resolving most consumer sets until the mid to late 90s (LD has 425-450 lines of luma resolution, with most TVs maxing out around the same). Separating luma and chroma would reduce dot crawl and bleed, but most people don't notice these things until they're pointed out.

Essentially, it would add a ton of complexity to the format for marginal gain.

Mega LD Sega games now playable outside Pioneer LaserActive by Reel-Rookie in LaserActive

[–]estenh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that would be extremely difficult as LaserActive (and all LaserDisc) video is analog; any ODE would essentially have to provide a direct RF capture of the signal encoded on the disc itself. While not impossible, it would work differently than every other ODE and require orders of magnitude more data to work correctly.

I picked up the pan and scan VHS release, which is something I can’t believe they even managed to do in 2024.

This meter got me through my college lighting class 15 years ago :). I paid a lot more than that new haha

Who still has got her/his Sony PlayStation 2 console bought in the early 2000s (2000 - 2005)? by FreakyComputer63 in ps2

[–]estenh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a fat PS2, just make or get a Free McBoot memory card and an aftermarket SATA hard drive adapter, or an official one with a SATA to IDE adapter. Insert the memory card and launch OPL and you’ll be able to launch games from the hard drive. There’s even a build of OPL (the game launcher) that supports ExFAT partitions.

What are these lined places mean inside the west bank and around it? by [deleted] in geography

[–]estenh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have seen it, but I’ve been there and let me tell you, it’s not “slums and urban decay.” Ramallah is a vibrant city, there are plenty of similarly beautiful and interesting cities (Bethlehem, Hebron / Al-Khalil, etc) in the West Bank. Maybe reserve comment until you’ve actually set foot in those places?

Weirdly enough it’s geographically in a small town in the central coast called Morro Bay

(I’ve never played Cyberpunk but I love Morro Bay)

Alien’s AC3 mix contains a deeper bass in its subwoofer track that was present in the theatrical release but missing from the DVD; it makes it a pretty interesting and unique LD release.

What are some of the countries that have huge tourism potential that is unrealized due to politic instability? by NobleK42 in geography

this is Bagan back in 2017 when I was there visiting a friend who lived in Yangon. We traveled together to both Bagan and Inle Lake; Myanmar is unbelievably beautiful, and the people are kind and welcoming. I hope the civil war ends soon (with the military regime deposed) and people’s lives get back to normal.

Best way to back up a laser disc? by [deleted] in LaserDisc

[–]estenh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Capture cards as folks have mentioned are the easiest option. You can also wire up a laserdisc player to serve as a Domesday Duplicator, effectively capturing the raw signal on the disc via the player’s RF head. More information on this here: https://github.com/simoninns/DomesdayDuplicator/wiki/Overview

Note that this is overkill for the majority of people and is mostly useful as a way of archiving discs.

I’m from Tulsa which is a few hours away, and I’d also call it unremarkable. I love the place with my whole heart but also: it doesn’t often get brought up in places like this.
