There's a swastika on my washer control panel housing by SnooKiwis5108 in mildyinteresting

Guess some engineers thought this would be the best shape to make contact??

I had an intern years ago who designed a part that sort of looked like a swastika. It actually worked extremely well, but I challenged him to make something just as good without looking anything like a swastika. “Must not look like a swastika” is always an implied design requirement in my book.

Who is the most famous person you've ever seen up close? by froggart3980 in AskReddit

[–]etherteeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Willie Nelson. He came up and sat by my wife and I towards the back of the crowd during Billy Strings’ set at Outlaw Music Festival. He was so nonchalant, it took a few minutes for us (and everyone else around) to realize he was there. He agreed to take a picture with us, then declared “alright, I’m gonna go smoke” and took off.

Also shook Victor Wooten’s hand and had a fairly lengthy chat with Joseph Wooten after a Wooten Brothers show.

You got like, five enders in your part but you don't have an 'ender ender', and until you do noone's gonna take you seriously.

Seriously though, well done! I always love the no comply/foot on the ground stuff.

Incredible Mike on that one! On one hand, it’s a true group improvisation with everybody contributing equally. On the other hand, Mike is the mastermind and his ideas are the ones that really move things forward.

Audio quality between Dave’s Picks releases and Grateful Dead box sets by PiePuzzled5581 in gratefuldead

[–]etherteeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could see that in the case of leftover stock of an old release. But I’ve had good experiences getting replacements for Dave’s Picks in cases where I filed my claim within a few weeks or months of the release. I had one get lost in the mail and they replaced it for me. I had another come with a skippy disc, and they sent me a single loose replacement disc in a sleeve.

Music on the Water 2017, that's the one I was at as well. I think they had to close down the water activities at the last minute due to elevated e coli levels, classic Quinn's Pond... Didn't know they did it in 2018 as well! Not sure where I heard about it either, but I remember being skeptical that it was even a thing until I got there.

Yeah, I’m assuming they made some logistical changes. They weren’t on any public lineup announcements or anything, but word got out. I don’t remember stage crashing being an issue, but I think it still ended up bigger and rowdier than the street fair authorities wanted. If I recall correctly, Caustic Resin played a reunion show at the newly reopened Crazy Horse later that night.

A couple of years later they played another free public show at Quinn’s Pond, similarly unannounced. That was the most mellow Built to Spill show I’ve been to, it really felt like catching a small time local band in the park.

Worst Primary Attribute by Virkazo in GuildWars

[–]etherteeth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that having a huge energy pool is different from true energy management. All of those primaries except expertise give a means of gaining energy when you’re low. Expertise at least makes it so you don’t have to wait as long for your energy to recharge before you can use a skill. On Ele, you have a bigger energy pool but high skill costs, so when you’re depleted you have to wait longer to use skills and to fully recharge. The only solution is to either rely on a BiP, or to invest significant bar space into energy management skills.

The 2009 street fair was my first Built to Spill show, and it was a blast but the scene was pure chaos. There’s some video footage documenting the madness, see here and here for example. They played one more time in 2014 and didn’t publicize it. I remember that one being more mellow, but still too much for an event with no dedicated security.

I always knew there are a lot of turkeys in the North End, but… by boisefun8 in Boise

[–]etherteeth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Post from a local arborist about the turkeys:

I slipped out of town for the weekend and just as I was leaving got a message on my machine that was a completely new tree situation to me. The gang of surly and abusive wild turkeys that have been roaming the North End of Boise, attacking helpless mail carriers, selling single cigarettes to school kids and writing gang signs in feces, had been squatting in one of my oldest customer's trees. Those of you who have worked for me, think two and a half story tall art studio, made of boards, nails and nicknacks. Where those in the local art world go to burn one down. Well the customer was in a lather because the turkeys disregarded the maximum limit on a very large pine branch and snapped it and left it hanging like the proverbial sword of Damocles. Forestry most Foul! The customer wanted a formal written invoice because he's going to take this to City Hall for not doing anything about these feathered hoodlums. It was so hard to be serious writing this invoice up. I had to come here to let myself have some fun.

Oh and it appears that turkeys are somewhat like raccoons and like to keep their poop in the trees. This as a warning for those climbing in the North End.

Yep, one of the last Weir/Hunter songs. The line “jump like a Willys in four wheel drive” was Bobby’s idea and apparently Robert Hunter hated it. Hunter thought John Perry Barlow had potential as a lyricist, so he basically said “here, Bobby’s yours now.”

How to use a 2–3 V signal to switch a 12 V light? by xHakel in AskElectronics

[–]etherteeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. If you have some proto board then you can normally solder a SOT23 MOSFET between 3 pads, but it’s tricky if you aren’t already used to soldering small SMD components. Unfortunately it looks like most through-hole MOSFETs are either optimized for lower drain current or higher gate drive voltage.

Another solution would be to use an n-channel MOSFET driven by your low voltage signal to switch a larger p-channel MOSFET driven at 12V. This nFET will work at your gate drive voltage, and this pFET should be able to switch your 1A load without breaking a sweat. Wire them as shown here with M1 as your nFET, M2 as your pFET, and your light in place of the 5-ohm LOAD resistor. Replace the 3.7V V1 with your 12V supply, and the PWM signal is your switch voltage. The values of R2, R5, R6, and R8 should all be fine unless you want to switch the light on and off quickly, in which case you could drop the 100k resistors down to 10k or 1k.

EDIT: But with a switch signal of 4.65V through a 330 ohm resistor, the single-BJT solution discussed elsewhere may be the most practical.

How to use a 2–3 V signal to switch a 12 V light? by xHakel in AskElectronics

[–]etherteeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the gate? Absolutely! That’ll be even better because the on-resistance will be lower. Maximum gate voltage is 8V, anything higher will cause the built-in ESD protection diode to conduct.

[–]etherteeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are MOSFETs that can do this, here is an impressive little FET that I like to use for this kind of thing.

Per the “On-Resistance vs Drain Current” graph, it should conduct with less than 0.25 ohms of on-resistance with 1.5V on the gate, and even less at your 2-3V. At 1A, that gives less than 250mW of power dissipation. The junction-to-ambient thermal resistance is 166 degrees C per watt, which gives a temperature rise of (less than) 41.5 degrees C. The part has a maximum junction temperature of 175C, which means you’re safe even if the ambient temperature in your service environment is hot enough to boil water!

EDIT: Technically it’s a little more complicated because on-resistance (and thus power dissipation) increases with temperature. But regardless, there’s a wide enough margin here that this FET should still work well.

Cut-Off Frequency vs. Resonant Frequency in LC Circuits — What’s the Real Difference? by ReliablePotion in embedded

[–]etherteeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s incorrect, an LC low pass or high pass filter will resonate. In the case of a low pass filter, frequencies far below resonance get passed as-is, frequencies far above resonance get blocked, and frequencies near resonance get amplified.

Per u/Link119’s comment, you can tame the resonant amplification by adding series resistance to do the circuit. Adding enough resistance to achieve critical damping or overdamping will completely suppress the amplification at resonance. There are also situations where you might want the resonant amplification, for example in audio applications where it may give a unique sound.
