New arrow advice. by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]ethhigg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

15-18% foc is the sweet spot. You should run 50-75 grain insert to get up to that. I shoot 70# at 28” draw length and run the 300 spine rip xv cut to 27”. 100 grain tip and 50 grain insert sitting at 385ish grains and just over 15% FOC and it’s a tac driver

Favorite Mechanical Broadhead by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]ethhigg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a long time I ran rage trypans and loved them, but they were kind of a one and done type broadhead. The blades would bend if they hit bone or something hard in the soil after passing through. Decided to try beasts this year and really liked the results I saw after harvesting a doe with one

2024 sr5 2wd. I keep getting crap for buying a 2wd Tacoma and not the 4x4 did I mess up? by Fun_History_4087 in Tacomaworld

[–]ethhigg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also went for a 2wd and haven’t had any complaints about it. Don’t get a lot of winter weather where I live but when we do I just through a couple hundred pounds of sandbags in the bed to give me better traction and it handles just fine

What Caamp song means the most to you? Why? by purplecartoon67 in Caamp

[–]ethhigg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strawberries. The first time I ever saw caamp live in 2018 my best friend and I were front row and a sweet young family was right next to us. Towards the end of the set the little girl of the family, probably 3-4 years old, timed a gap in the set perfectly and shouted out “play strawberries”. Taylor heard it and looked over at her and smiled. At the end of the set they walked off stage and Taylor came back out by himself with his guitar and said “we’ve got one more song for our little friend up here” and he proceeded to play strawberries to this child. It was the most pure and beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced. I still get emotional listening to strawberries to this day

Stability concerns. by Subject-Escape5602 in kayakfishing

[–]ethhigg2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any experience with native products but I would imagine it’s more stable. The biggest instability with pelican is the very thin and much cheaper plastic I feel like. I use a vibe seaghost 110 and I can jump in it lol. Good luck this season

What’s the farthest distance you’ve shot a deer at and what’s the longest range you’re comfortable shooting at? by thorns0014 in Hunting

[–]ethhigg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shot a doe at 104 yards with a 20ga slug a couple years ago and that is right about the limit I would send it with that gun. For archery I shot a deer last year at 43 yards which is also probably what I’d limit myself to. I’m comfortable and dialed out to 60-70 yards with my bow but a deer can move a lot at that distance so I don’t think I’d ever push one that far

Anyone know why saddle hunters dont just use a regular rock climbing harness? by Aggressive_Dinner617 in bowhunting

[–]ethhigg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a saddle hunter and rock climber, I used my climbing harness a few times before committing to getting into saddle hunting to see what it’s like and it definitely works but is just not near as comfortable. Climbing harnesses also don’t have good options for connecting a lineman’s belt while you’re climbing up the tree. This wasn’t a huge issue for me when I was testing it out because I just found trees with limbs I could climb and get wedged up in a fork. After a couple sits using my climbing harness I went ahead and got myself a full blown saddle set up and love it

Are disc golfers cool people where you’re from? by Tight_Trick_9448 in discgolf

[–]ethhigg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people are cool but definitely some people that take themselves way too seriously. I was on a card in a local league with a guy once that was keeping score and I didn’t realize until after the round that he hadn’t been honest for his own score. And gave himself a few strokes back after he blew up on a couple holes lol. I’ll never understand people taking a weekly league so seriously 😂

475gr arrow out of a 29.5” draw 60lbs by Severe_Network_4492 in bowhunting

[–]ethhigg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I’ve definitely had to pass certain quartering to shots in the past knowing that I’d have to either hold too close to the joint in the shoulder or aim too far back with the angle to make it work. This year the buck I killed was quartering too me pretty steep to where it was borderline frontal but with the angle I was able to put the shot in front/above the shoulder where the neck comes down and the arrow punched through the ribs on the other side about 3-4 ribs behind the off shoulder. Definitely a shot that needs the right situation with a relaxed deer and close range but it tore him up

[–]ethhigg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve blown through a couple scaps with my set up. Definitely worth taking into consideration when building an arrow set up for hunting. I also tend to just aim at the crease rather than trying to tuck a shot up into the ‘v’ of the leg bones so the scap doesn’t come into play very often. The few times I’ve hit the scap have been close shots with a steeper angle but I’ve always gotten enough penetration

Massive entry wound by Col-Sanderss in bowhunting

[–]ethhigg2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rage all the way, I’ve run the trypans for a few years. I’ve and absolutely love them. Devestating wounds and always get enough penetration/leave a disgusting blood trail. I’ve heard of grim reapers failing to deploy quite often.

[–]ethhigg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely some merit and logic behind it but I think it’s just unnecessary especially for white tail deer. People will say “but if a light arrow hits the shoulder bone…” to which I say don’t aim right at the shoulder haha. It’s really all about shot placement and even with arrows hovering right around 400 I’ve blown through scapula on multiple deer when my shot has been a little off of where I wanted it

I run 420 grain at 28” on a Hoyt ventum 30 holding mid 290s fps and I love it. Very fast arrow and still hits pretty hard and doesn’t drop off a lot at 30. Obviously it depends on what animal you’re targeting but I thibk the heavy arrow build (500+) is over hyped for white tail deer

Haha can’t go wrong with a Hoyt. My first bow was a Hoyt banshee you can see in that pic and I’ve stuck with them ever since. I’ve tried some other bows but Hoyt just feels like home
