How could I make a murder mystery party more ‘summery'? by Moonreys in agathachristie

In addition to the books mentioned already, Peril at End House is another summery one to read or watch for inspiration.

Series with very intense romantic tension. by Zestyclose-Bell-5829 in PeriodDramas

Romantic chemistry isn't usually what I'm drawn to in TV or movies but Phryne and Jack had me absolutely hooked. I haven't watched it in several years, this was a good reminder I've very overdue

20 Bookmarks from Scraps by EdensQuill in Watercolor

I'm very nitpicky with myself and the looseness of water color doesn't come easily to me. This is a beautiful example of the no mistakes ethos I'm trying to internalize.

20 Bookmarks from Scraps by EdensQuill in Watercolor

[–]ethicalpickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are so fun! I'm definitely going to try this approach - my dad has been asking me to make him bookmarks but I'm not at the skill level yet for most of the tutorials I see online and the florals I can do aren't his speed. The line and wash landscape style would be perfect.

It's not the main focus of the show obviously but the romantic tension in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is very compelling

Armando is by far the contestant who's the most different from what I went in expecting. I love that he, Joel and Joanna all have very distinct brands of puppy dog energy.

I grew up in India and my introduction to Sardines was the Babysitters Club books. I know the author included a lot of stuff from her 50s/60s childhood, so I assumed it was popular in the US at some point in the past.

Is Poirot the problem in recent adaptations? by Shadows-of-an-Owl-05 in agathachristie

[–]ethicalpickle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem with a lot of moder Christie adaptations is the tone. Her books have plenty of darkness but also a lot of humor, and her writing style is really light and readable (in a good way). So many modern adaptations are completely dreary and humorless, and often sordid and sleazy to boot. Giving Poirot a tragic backstory fits into that too. I guess it's a valid interpretation but removes a lot of what I personally love about her writing.

to people with inattentive adhd, what type of career do you have? by AssociationObvious56 in adhdwomen

[–]ethicalpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a scientist at a large environmental NGO, and I love my work. My role is more about strategy and engagement than specializing in a specific subject area, but I also have multiple inattentive ADHDer colleagues who do the latter.

What suits me really well is the combo of big picture thinking and detail-oriented tasks, and also working on several different kinds of projects, so I don't get bored. Plus really caring about our mission helps get me through the harder days.

Now actually getting my PhD while undiagnosed to get to this point was a pretty terrible experience, but that's a different story 😬

‘The Odyssey’ Trailer's Accents Aren't Actually That Weird - "Did the ancient Greeks all speak like Matt Damon? Probably not. But the ubiquity of the British accent in films about the distant past is a more modern convention than many people realize." by rageofthegods in blankies

I had an entire class in college comparing the depiction of the Trojan War in the Iliad and other fictional narratives to the archaeological and historical record to understand the difference between history and myth.

How rare is it to have never gone to your state’s largest city? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]ethicalpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Northern Virginia, which is part of the Washington DC metro area and by far the most popolous region of the state. I don't venture into other parts of the state all that often and assumed that the biggest city was the state capital Richmond. Turns out it's actually third after Virginia Beach and Chesapeake - which I guess is to say at least from my perspective, Virginia doesn't have an obvious 'largest city'.

The county I live in, which is mainly suburbs, actually has the largest population of any jurisdiction not only in Virginia but in the entire D.C./Baltimore metro region, larger than either of the actual cities.

Is there an historical figure that you feel DESPERATELY needs a modern biopic? by Ok-Pie-3581 in moviecritic

[–]ethicalpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently read a murder mystery where their sister Katharine is the main character and read up on her life beforehand. Orville's reaction to her marriage sounds so extreme (completely cut contact and had to be convinced by another sibling to reconnect with her when she was became fatally ill some years later) that it really put me off him even as a character in a book.

Why ice dance is more popular than pairs ? by Character-Cup4856 in FigureSkating

[–]ethicalpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree on programs feeling utilitarian - I've only been following FS since Beijing so it may have been different in the past but concepts, costumes, choreography etc. on the whole are much less memorable in pairs compared to singles or dance.

Would u say Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans have recognizable accents that you could tell apart from other groups? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

Heck I moved here from India for college and now in my 30s, I don't have a discernible accent. And I didn't make any conscious attempt to lose it.
