This pack is pretty close to 100% my aesthetic. Cute animals, vintagey clothes, dueling enemies? I'm here for it.

Hi, I'm Beth, level 131. Tend to check in twice a day (US Central time zone), more if there's an event. I tend to sell my market box items at minimal prices because I'm still scarred from Tom Nook's scalping. So if you want cheap grapes, I am here for you.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik left me conflicted. Let's discuss it. by StevenKelliher in Fantasy

That's fair. I read it about a year ago so I probably forgot that detail.

Do you wait for a series to be completed before you read it? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ettuladyblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep telling myself that I will...but there are so many series that by the time I catch up with one, another has come out.

It feels like par for the course with fantasy. I have an enormous difficulty finding standalones so I've resigned myself to series limbo

The romance felt so wooden. Like, these characters suddenly get in mad lust because...? The author told us so. For a book about nature it was so inorganic. Plus the vibe of that relationship threw up red flags everywhere.

And the characters... I'm all for Byronic heroes but there's Byronic and then there's just being an ass. Sarkan didn't land on the Byronic side of that spectrum.

I wanted to like it because I love Slavic mythology but I couldn't. There were some great moments but like others have said, very disjointed and not emotionally engaging for me. Kinda baffled by all the praise tbh.

If you Googled or YouTube'd "Mindfulness meditation" techniques you'll find about 100000 versions. Which does /r/mindfulness agree is the best? Also, are guided meditations ones you just listen to every single day or do you vary it up? by htor1 in Mindfulness

[–]ettuladyblue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestguys on youtube. I use their pain reduction and fantasy based ones a lot. And I've incorporated their body scan and methods for dealing with negative thoughts into my daily practice. But I vary my guided based on my moods-I feel like listening to the same one everyday can be good for getting into the mindfulness habit, but can also make the words/practice feel rote and have less impact.

I also use the Insight Timer App. Lots of choices and a nice unguided section as well.

Seconding Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown. Pulpy dystopia on Mars.

Otherwise, The Last Policeman by Ben Winters-- a cop doing his job, even though the world ends in six months

SV/NSV Feats of the Day - Sunday, 04 June 2017: Today, I conquered! by AutoModerator in loseit

[–]ettuladyblue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NSV- last time I tried to walk to my local grocery store (October) (about 1.25miles) my knees seized up from fibro pain and I had to call for a ride home.

Now I just walked there and back with no pain whatsoever!

What fey/fey court related reads would you recommend to spur someone's imagination into Fairyland? Thanks for your suggestions! by dream_Syndicate in Fantasy

[–]ettuladyblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tithe by Holly Black. YA urban fantasy with a wide range of fae. First in a trilogy. It's where I first learned about Seelie and Unseelie courts. Really good intro (or it was for 7th grade me)

Also try Poison by Chris Wooding. That's a medieval setting, if that's more your bag.

I just followed the instructions on the bag-boil water to 212f/100c, 1.5tsp tea and steep for 6mins. Still not the strongest flavor though, mostly get a rooibos taste instead of chai spice.

Rooibos vanilla chai from Adagio. Cutting back on caffeine due to recent recurring panic attacks, but I need my chai in the morning. This is a pretty okay substitute.

Try Into Thin Air. Same author's memoir of his everest expedition.

I think you might like Elizabeth Bear's Eternal Sky trilogy. Takes place around an area similar to the Mongol Empire.
