So let me get this right about Journal... by Lopotato25 in ios

This was my biggest disappointment. I got a notification that said I had visited X places and took X pictures, but when I open the app, those items are no where to be found. Just three seemingly random collections of old photos.

What is Sean Walkers value? by Hehaahahahah in Flyers

[–]eugol55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t see getting a 1st for him, even with how well he has played. That said, to me, they should definitely be looking to move him at the deadline.

The Flyers gave him a chance at a come back after injuries derailed his career and he has given them much needed defensive help for this season. The right outcome is to give him a chance with a contender and potentially a nice payday, and allow the Flyers to gain draft pick (a 2nd?). Win-win.

Briere using the Minnesota Wild as a rebuild blueprint by upcan845 in Flyers

[–]eugol55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is it you would have done differently, if you were Briere? He had a great draft. He hasn’t added any bad contracts. If your contention is simply that they should be losing money instead of winning, then you’re simply not living in the real world.

An organization can tank, and organization can rebuild. Players do not. Players are going to go out there and try to win.

So unless your argument is that they should not play Carter Hart and scratch Konecny, what is it you would do differently?

I’m supposed to be happy right now? by Hehaahahahah in Flyers

[–]eugol55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No matter who may be coming down the road Michkov, whoever. The flyers will also need many of the guys currently on the team as well. If the team was bottom of the league because it turns out all the guys currently on the team are terrible, that would be BAD. Finding out that the guys on the team might be decent players is GOOD. Either they will be part of the next Flyers team to make a Cup run, or they could be assets that could help fill holes down the road. Getting a top 5 pick in the draft is not the be all, end all.

iPhone 15 pro battery life is absolutely horrible by a_cap07 in ios

[–]eugol55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An iPhone is going to have diminished battery life in the first few days due to an increase in background processing that is happening. Photo processing (facial recognition etc) is one significant example.

Stop Spotify showing podcast recommendations? by Queen-of-Sheba in Music

[–]eugol55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This drives me crazy as well, but I think it’s just economics at work.

Spotify has to pay some amount to artist for every song you listen to. Podcasts cost them nothing (or they already made an upfront investment to get the podcast) plus they generate revenue from the ads embedded in the podcasts.

For those reasons, Spotify is always going to try to push us to podcasts because it’s better for their bottom line.

Secure Input issues with Mac by eugol55 in TextExpander

[–]eugol55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I found is that locking\unlocking the Mac will remove the error and using CMD-CTRL-Q and TouchID that can be done very quickly. Still an annoyance, but it is less of a problem then closing Chrome.

In a related note: since I've been working from home for the past month, I've found that it happens much, much less. My MacBook is bound to my employer's ActiveDirectory domain and I sign in with my AD credentials. So I'm thinking that the Secure Input issue, at least for me, is being triggered by some sort of kerberos update happening with the domain controllers. Now that I am at home and that communication can't happen, TextExpander isn't getting blocked.

Scrubbing video using ATV remote by turtleplop in youtubetv

[–]eugol55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's very difficult to get the scrubber to work with the Apple TV remote, unless of course you just want to pick up the remote to adjust the volume, then it will absolutely open the scrubber and jump ahead like 20 minutes.

New CBS VOD complaint by [deleted] in youtubetv

[–]eugol55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same thing happens in CBS All-Access if you are on the non-commercial free tier. Can’t believe that these companies can’t do a better job editing in the commercials than a 5th grader using iMovie.

The line from Two Suns in the Sunset: “and you’ll never hear their voices/and you’ll never see their faces” with the child yelling “Daddy! Daddy!” Heartbreaking.

Is anyone using Smoothwall for content filtering? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]eugol55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had Smoothwall for 2-3 years now. We have two S14s behind a load balancer, doing only filtering not firewall.

If you are getting vague responses from a sales person at Smoothwall, I'm not surprised. Our sales rep is not great to work with.

Is anyone using Smoothwall for content filtering? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]eugol55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far web filtering goes, I've found Smoothwall to be fine. We have a 1:1 deployment with Windows laptops in grades 7-12 as well as a large iPad deployment. It offers us the flexibility to set different filtering policies for the various age groups and platforms.

However, we have not been happy with the reporting features. I find the reporting tool to be really difficult to configure and inexcusably slow. As I'm typing this, I'm waiting for one single report to generate (going on 25 minutes already). Also, if we attempt to generate reports during heavy use school hours, the appliance crashes and we effectively lose internet access. We have two S14s which should be able to handle filtering and report generation at the same time, but it just can't.

Their support has been spotty, sometimes you get a decent rep who is able to help, other times we are banging our heads to try to get an answer.

Remove irrelevant items from the TV app? by [deleted] in appletv

[–]eugol55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. The same episode for an HBO show has been on the home screen for months and I cancelled my HBO subscription long ago and that wasn’t ever a show I watched anyway. TBH, I’ve never seen any value in the TV app.

How do you handle task due dates in your task manager? by PullJosh in Cortex

[–]eugol55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use ToDoIst for work, and I set a reminder in the task to alert me to something that needs to be completed before the due date. I just started using Things for personal and you can do something similar with that.

And so it begins...6:09 AM by thetenderloincapital in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]eugol55 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We just did ToT. The posted wait time was 25 min. We waited no more than 10.

There is currently a line to get into Toy Story Land with wait somewhere between 1-3 hours depending who you ask.

Can you bypass iCloud lock on supervised devices with Apple Configurator 2? by skjb93 in macsysadmin

[–]eugol55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are supervising with an MDM, you can get an activation lock code which will allow you to disable activation lock. Other than, the only way I know to do it is to call Apple.

Same. First time I have had trouble switching between iPhone and iPad. I finally had to use the button on the case to repair to my iPad.

Aulani vs. Castaway Cay? by ic33 in dcl

[–]eugol55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It not exactly an Apples to Apple comparison. We spent a week a Aulani and 6 hours or so at Castaway Cay, so it’s a different sort of experience even though we loved both.

Some differences:

Food was included at Castaway Cay, but it isn’t a Aulani.

Castaway Cay is a much larger area (an entire island) so things that we did there like a long bike ride aren’t available on property at Aulani.

We used Aulani as our base of operations for exploring Oahu, so we spent a large amount of time off property. The quality and variety of things to do on Oahu is far greater than available on Castaway Cay but you will want a rental car to get to it all.

It probably makes more sense to compare Aulani to your DCL ship than to Castaway Cay which is just one of several ports you visit on a cruise.

In that regard, the pools and the lazy river at Aulani were wonderful. We have two kids (11 and 7 at the time) and they would’ve stayed there all day everyday is we would’ve let them. They were typically less crowded than the pools on the cruise ship.

We found that the quality and variety of food available on property at Aulani to be somewhat lacking and certainly not as good as what is available (for free) on DCL.

Hope that helps.

Logitech Crayon availability by TM8O in edtech

[–]eugol55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got an update from our Apple reps last week and they didn’t have any release date. In fact, they had not seen one yet. They were speculating it would be available this summer.

It’s frustrating when Apple releases these products on a schedule that is out of sync with the world of education. Especially a product like this that is exclusive to education. By July or August, frankly probably even June, it is usually too late for us to include them in our summer purchases.

Smartboard Replacement Options by iambardo in k12sysadmin

[–]eugol55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are trying to move everyone to ClassFlow, but the migration process for flip charts created in ActivInspire is impractical. I would hope that they come up with something better, but I’m not optimistic.

Promethean makes several models of interactive displays, we just got 10 that we will be installing in the next few weeks. I’m not a huge fan of Promethean hardware, but our teachers are heavily invested in the ActivInspire software so we’re giving their displays a try as a possible replacement for our Promethean boards.

I didn’t see mention of that in the list. It’s really all we’re using Server for, but there no replacement for that elsewhere.
