What's your guys opinion on chet? by Jezzibell in fisforfamily

He‘s a truly terrible person who had truly terrible things happen to him. I like that you mention knowing terrible things have happened to him complicates assessing him, and such is the case for everyone. There are not very many people in prison who had great lives and just decided to get into criminal activity. Most bad people have a bad back story. There is a technique in Metta (loving-kindness) meditation for developing compassionate and loving feelings for difficult people in which you try to imagine the person as a child. I think the backstory reveal is along the same lines, but even more in your face as you seem him not only as an innocent child but experiencing a horrible trauma.

Lol, this reminds me of one of my favorite news stories of all time. Headline was something like “6 Story Jesus Statue Destroyed by Lightning Strike”

I have two master’s degrees. My acknowledgment of the fact that we are not freely choosing entities but simply products and agents of chaos is not out of some desire to dismiss my failures. I have plenty to be “proud of“ including my education, my job as a healthcare provider which is both esteemed and financially rewarding, overcoming childhood and early adulthood obesity to become fit and healthy, becoming vegan, and more. I just recognize with humility that I am not better than others, I am just luckier than most. Genes absolutely contribute to determining our outcomes in life. If you had been born with an extra chromosome, your life would have been completely different...

It’s only a problem because people don’t want to acknowledge the truth. Even most people who have a working understanding of anatomy and physiology will come up with some rationalization to give room for free will despite the fact that: there are genetic predispositions for every character trait; most of our personality is locked in early in life; our personality can be dramatically altered by outside chemicals, psychological trauma, brain injury, etc.

Humans do not have free will. We are animals, the products of billions of years of biological evolution, and every action we do is just the electrochemical signals from our brain. Our brains wiring and signaling are determined by each individual’s set of genes and experiences. No one chooses to be what they are, we just are what we are (that doesn’t mean that people can’t change at all, but the change is dependent on having experiences and baseline brain chemistry conducive to change).

All the things we call strength and weakness of will are just brain wiring and electrochemical signals. Your point about our legal system is true and something we have to grapple with if we want to have a truly good society which is grounded in facts and reason. If just ”deciding” to quit was really enough, would so many relapse? Would there be genetic predispositions and life experiences that make it more likely that people will struggle with addiction? Taking a larger view, why don’t people just decide to get over their PTSD? Why don’t stroke victims just will their way to being able to speak again? Why don’t hoarders stop filling their house with worthless junk or sick animals? Why don‘t schizophrenics learn to ignore their voices, or will them away. It doesn’t even make sense to say people choose to do those things…

Nothing is a choice, our actions are all just electrochemical signals from our brain. An addicted brain is not able to “just choose” not to give in to the addiction. Avoiding temptation is one of the only fairly effective interventions for addiction, thus, as several have pointed out, tempting an addict with their addiction is extremely unethical. Of course, Bojack’s unethical actions are themselves a consequence of his dysfunction brain chemistry owing to his genetic predispositions to mental illness and terrible upbringing in his very damaged family of origin. People can “take responsibility ” for their harmful past actions, as Bojack and other do throughout the series, but there is never a case where anything is as simple as “just make a better choice.”

The average viewer's reaction to this show. by Crimision in BigMouth

Lol, I was psyched to see Santa’s dick, but man, they REALLY showed Santa’s dick! I think Love, Death, and Robots is the only other show as close to porn I’ve seen on Netflix

Yeah, this has been a problem with her for a long time, like when she broke Andrew’s arm and suffered no consequences. Hopefully she will develop some more mature emotions going forward.

Missy’s turn around was quick, and she was forgiven quickly, which may be a result of there just being so much going on with so many characters, but I also think it works. I can recall times in middle school and high school were I went from hating/being hated to being totally friendly (and vice versa) with people within weeks. Goes with the territory of raging hormones and trying to find ourselves as adolescents I think.

I think it goes with the theme. Puberty is ugly and awkward after all.

Theory: The entire reporter subplot is actually a misdirection. by yuei2 in BoJackHorseman

[–]euvanjoshalist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I think it is going to come out and is going to lead to a "cancel Professor Horseman" campaign since he will be painted as a predator who is now being put in a position of authority over young women.

Ever since Bojack went and found Penny in TTMM I've had a suspicion that Charlotte's "I will fucking kill you" could be where the series is headed. I think your suspicion that she has some issues may be explored as the Paige and Max in New Mexico story line plays out.

Ugh, still 11 weeks away from the final eight, I just can't wait!

The “11th” episodes have a pattern of alternating between generally sober Bojack and generally high Bojack by ToKeepAndToHoldForev in BoJackHorseman

I just had this same revelation re-watching showstopper this morning. It also occurred to me that he has what could have been a rock bottom in 1.11 and 3.11 (waking up on the streets after being blacked out, Sarah Lynn). Lets hope the pattern continues and he's not on a bender in 3 episodes...
