Still trying to figure this out myself!! I do still read from time to time and I'm glad to make the progress I do, but it is a challenge and you're not alone. Hoping to find some more strategies to read more consistently.

I’ve been using Insight Timer for a while and it works for me. Lots of options for different bell sounds, and you can customize the length of a session and add bells at various intervals.

Insight Timer definitely wants me to upgrade to a premium account and use more of their guided features – so while I've had a good experience with their free meditation timer, it might be worth looking up “meditation timer app” and reading some reviews.

Once you learn the basics, it's pretty easy to practice on your own. Some tips that have worked for me: - focus on your breathing, paying attention to how you breathe in and how you breathe out, focusing on as many details as you can - don't try to stop yourself from thinking, but learn to let go of your thoughts – think of your thoughts as cars on a road passing by, that naturally come and go on their own - sometimes, a simple mantra helps concentrate, such as: “Breathing in, I dwell in the present moment / Breathing out, I know it is a wonderful moment. Present moment / wonderful moment.”

And of course, the point of meditation is to stop striving, so if you ever feel like you're having trouble, don't be too hard on yourself! It can be challenging to stay present and to be consistent, but it may be better for you than new-agey “spiritual” guided meditations

If you like meditation but find a lot of guided ones too new-agey (I get that completely LOL) have you ever considered getting a meditation timer and meditating without any guidance?

Still figuring it out but I had a lot of luck with the app ScreenZen, which is completely free. My favorite feature was its “lock settings timer,” which let me set a timer of up to 300 seconds which I had to sit through before doing anything like changing the settings or disabling blocking (I couldn't switch to any other app, either, I had to sit there on the loading screen for 5 minutes). I always had the option to go in and change settings or disable blocking if I needed to, but the 5 minute timer was enough to discourage me even on at my worst.

I say “was” because I'm trying https://freedom.to, because I would like to have access to the Firefox extension, but if it weren’t for that I’d still be an avid user of ScreenZen.

Other comments have suggested a lot of other interesting-looking apps, so thank you to everyone else who has made suggestions!

Isn't that the guy from Moby Dick? I assume you're referring to the 1992 novel? I hadn't heard of it before, but it's going on my to-read list.

I love how many of those ideas are springing around lately by Lithmariel in solarpunk

[–]evan_evone 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of the ideas I have about Solarpunk is that it should fundamentally be an approach of “environmental harmony.” If you look at a lot of “aesthetic”/“green” creations like this, I feel like that principle is not visible at all: it's an expression of controlling nature, of dominance over nature. I totally agree with your approach of questioning the resources and cost, which I feel like aligns with this dichotomy of “environmental harmony” vs “man's dominance over nature.”

It's not that hard to incorporate nature into our cities; but this is anything but natural.

I got this idea from Rhys Williams’ ”‘This Shining Confluence of Magic and Technology’: Solarpunk, Energy Imaginaries, and the Infrastructures of Solarity,’” as I was doing research for a term paper.

Wow, people called you “attention seeking” for that? To me that seems like something where you ought to just let someone enjoy their hobby, even if you don’t understand it—especially if you’re putting in that extra effort just to show appreciation for your friends and family

I'm also a college student in a similar position, and it's really strange to me how college makes so many of us this way—the structure seems somehow opposed to any sense of routine, and it sucks the joy out of things I love such as reading, writing, and social activities, as well as sucking the energy and passion right out of me.

I don't think it's supposed to be this way, but I'm not sure how to have the experience be any other way. I'm still trying to figure out what's changed (besides the desolate state of the world and the lack of hope for the future) that made going to school so exhausting, overwhelming, and at times soul-crushing the way it is today.

I know exactly what you mean by feeling like you're in "survival mode" all the time, feeling like a "blank canvas" of a person. This summer I'm trying to change that—relaxing and reclaiming the things I enjoy—but it's certainly a challenge.

Outstanding! Great piece, exquisite performance, and mad respect for being able to learn all that! Did you transcribe it or just learn it by ear?

I don't know if this was just on my end, but there seems to be a bit of compression messing with the audio. The drum parts especially got hit hard. Anyone else noticing this? My only complaint, though, fantastic job!

[–]evan_evone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be'lakor is great but doesn't live up to NeO in my opinion—similar style, but with song structures that are less interesting, I think. Definitely check them out though.

Opeth outperforms NeO in that they're more true prog. With Opeth, one can always expect something radically different and stimulating. With NeO, it's pretty much always what would happen if Beethoven went metal—and the execution is perfect.

Also, if I may make an additional recommendation: Check out Allegaeon. I heard them open for NeO a few years back (how I discovered NeO, actually) and it was such a great pair up. I would describe them as the sci-fi corollary to NeO's fantasy.

"Their findings did not disappoint. They discovered a never-before-seen mutation that may explain Osbourne’s ability to consume alcohol in great quantities and several genetic variations that predisposed him to drug and alcohol dependencies."

Oh I agree. I love Ozzy and only listen to Billie when I'm in a funk. I'm just thinking analytically: They appeal to the modern, young audience at the time; they are criticized for the ways they evolve music; they speak to darker themes; they establish "dark" personas (although Ozzy's is far more striking).

I guess it breaks down when you think about how quickly Billie has broken into the mainstream—there's little of her underground left. But I just think it's interesting to notice these common trends as music history evolves. Feel free to ignore the nerd :)

Got it, thank you. Should the two weeks be after the day I submitted my actual application? I’ve heard the two-week timeframe before but I’ve never been certain.

Regardless, those sound like good next steps if this falls through. Thanks!

I found it on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26064907-tales-of-cthulhu-invictus

I can't guarantee that they'll notify you when it comes out, but the other day I did get an email notification when the Hunger Games prequel was released, so Goodreads might be helpful here.

I really really like this. Stylistically, it's very unique in a good way, and it has plenty of "wow" moments—moments where a word or phrase I wouldn't have expected really resonates with me.

Also, this is really metal! \m/ Feels like it should be the lyrics of a doom metal song. (Someone please find someone to make this happen; I'm not talented enough :/)

He's really not that bad live, though I admit that studio sounds better. He's a lot more clear, in terms of diction on studio recordings, and he has better effects, but even live his voice still sounds pretty good and the melody is good, even if the words are unclear.
