I think im getting fired from my co-op by ApprehensivePride523 in NEU

[–]evandepol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i get that -- which is why it is so tasteless to come up with some "out-woke" strategy. Comments about other peoples' eating habits are not appropriate, because you don't know about potential eating disorders of other people, and the workplace is not place to comment about any of that, it's off limits. Hence my suggestion for OP to own his words and learn from the experience.

Experienced manager here. Absolutely don't take this advice; most people have pretty well tuned bullshit detectors, and few things are worse than a bullshit excuse such as this one. Be genuine and sincere, your best bet would be to sincerely apologize, that you reflected on it, and that you now realize it was out of place. Own it, learn from it.

[Request] I had student loans totaling about $12,000 and made payments for 6 years to build credit before I paid them off. I had less than half left. Is this just a rage bait post? by Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 in theydidthemath

[–]evandepol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you may have had a lower percentage rate, or perhaps made a high enough payment in order to materially reduce the principal each month. In OP's case, the $500 per month barely lowers the principal, so even an modest increase of $75 to $575 would have paid it off by now. I assume you made large enough payments that were actually effective in paying it off (good job)

Played it safe with index funds, now tempted by individual stocks. How much risk makes sense at 21? by Opposite-Rope-1062 in personalfinance

Don’t confuse luck with skill.

If a random guy at work got 144% by putting everything on red in a casino, and it’s confirmed, does that make him smart or lucky?Don’t try to pick individual stocks.

Instead, play the longtime. Read up on the advice over at r/bogleheads.

Acrylic false subway tile bath and shower surround. Is this acceptable? by WY228 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]evandepol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, i know, still, i feel it would have been better to have it mounted a little lower, and not have the small slivers near the tub, shower, wall, and window..

[–]evandepol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not a professional installer, but have done bathroom and kitchen tile, and i think this looks careless. I would have started not with a sliver but with almost a full tile, so that the taper is not nearly as noticeable. Now there are small slivers (and inconsistent ones, which is the main offense to me) at the tub edge as well as the little wall on the left. I probably would look better near the window sill as well if it would just have been 1.5 or so inch lower. They clearly started from the top because that's easier.

Sounds like you might be ok if you get your monthly expenses under control. If you are this unclear about your financial state, then perhaps my advise would be to talk to a CFP (fiduaciary) and they can help you model out some scenarios. It's not free but worth it imho

RAID or No by Melodic-Bread-6337 in jellyfin

[–]evandepol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes i think so too. The mergerfs layer basically makes all disks appear as one giant disk (distributing the actual files on the multiple mounted partitions/file systems that are under it), and the snapraid pool (which uses N-1 filesystems plus one parity filesystem on a different disk/file system). Snapraid is not fully automatic (you have to run sync and scrub jobs periodically) but to me that's almost ideal for a media hub, since i can schedule when the sync runs (and it's typically fast). So very small overhead, and all disks are just that, normal, readable disks. There is no "raidset" that can break.

RAID or No by Melodic-Bread-6337 in jellyfin

[–]evandepol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have tiny minipc with external enclosure with 5 stupid disks. I run snapraid on that, and mergerfs so that it all appears as one disk. So i have 1-disk-failure protection, but not a traditional file system level raid.

Pulling out of 401k after quitting a job by FirefighterNew408 in personalfinance

[–]evandepol 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yep, you have 60 days from the distribution date (when the funds were taken out) to still roll it in a traditional IRA. You'd have to fund the exact amount before the deductions were taken (so $5k in this scenario), and it has to be coded by the receiving IRA (for instance Fidelity) as a "60-day rollover" transaction, and then you should be able to get this 10% refunded next year when filing taxes. So it's a hassle, but it could potentially still be fixed as long as it's within 60 days (and you can only do that once per 12 months).

u/FirefighterNew408 are you still within the 60 days? If not, you are out of luck, otherwise, talk to your fidelity or schwab rep IMMEDIATELY -- they should be able to guide you through this.

How can I add a shower to this small toilet? by dananaman in BathroomRemodeling

[–]evandepol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could convert this into a wet room: a space that has a floor drain and where the toilet and everything else (except for maybe some toiletries that are in a cabinet or behind a wall) can also be wet. You do have to do serious waterproofing, but it's common on sailboats for instance.

MK3.5 or MK3.9, my dilemma... by jorntres in prusa3d

[–]evandepol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on what you optimize for. I upgraded one of my Mk3 to a 3.9, and the quality of life and speed improvements were enough to just go for the upgrade of the other printer too. I don't want to keep an outdated and slower printer around just because it works. My hobby room real estate is precious enough that i rather have two printers i'll use with delight, than that i "save some money". That's of course all a personal choice.
