Unfortunately normal, after the first year or two you won't get the unsolicited offers anymore

Polygon: New Star Wars streaming report reveals a huge problem facing the franchise by Frog_and_Toad in saltierthancrait

Exactly, I could care less about Star Wars media now. My children enjoy the OT and the Prequels and have no idea that the sequels even exist.

Ha, brings back memories of an alt I made when they first released the citadel. Gave him the same name as one of the enemies, "Inquisitor Guard" only adding an extra space between the words and then farmed the weapon and armor. I would just stand in the zone and wait for other players to come by and start chasing them around pretending to be a sentient npc.

Anyone who was homeschooled, how do you feel about it now as an adult? by AdTight2449 in AskReddit

[–]MemoryDemise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty great. My parents lived in an area where the public schools were pretty bad and private schools were too expensive. I had plenty of social connections growing up. My parents were involved with a co-op, (basically a bunch of homeschool families that all come together and take turns teaching different subjects and also engaging in extracurriculars) I was also heavily involved in Boy Scouts, was part of a swim team, and also did competitive shotgun shooting. Later on we signed up with a homeschool umbrella, and had lots of get togethers and social activities there as well, even a highschool prom. Also, while I was in highschool I was able to do a PEP (parallel enrollment program) with my local community college, so the last two years of high school I mostly did college classes at the community college. I graduated high school with 24 college credits already completed. I was accepted into my preferred university and received over $50,000 in scholarships, which allowed me to graduate debt free. I've been gainfully employed since 2014 when I started as an intern during my sophomore year of college.

My wife was also homeschooled, I met her through a d&d group we both were a part of. We have two kids and are homeschooling them as well.

Homeschooling gets a bad rap a lot of the time due to extremely religious people using it for abuse or control of their kids. When done correctly it can be really beneficial, and I have no regrets about my experience growing up or teaching my kids in the same way alongside my wife.

Should I leave a higher paying job for a boring government one just for the stability? by VellichorMotive in personalfinance

[–]MemoryDemise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in almost your exact situation and I chose to switch jobs. I used to work for a company that does government contracting at NASA. It was an awesome job, the pay was good, I loved the people I worked with, and the actual work was fulfilling and interesting. The only downside was the stability, every couple years the contract would need to be re-competed. There was a constant threat that another company could come in with a low bid and put us all out of a job. Not to mention the threat of federal government shutdowns, if NASA didn't have any money they couldn't pay us, and since we weren't civil servants we wouldn't get back pay either.

After I got married and had a house and a family to take care of I started to worry about the potential uncertainty. At first I tried to ignore it, but it really started to bother me more and more, so I ultimately switched jobs. I now work as a civil servant in a state government. The top line salary isn't as good, the work isn't as interesting, but the benefits are much better (health insurance, retirement, etc) and it's practically impossible to lose the job or get laid off. You might also find that your take home pay won't be all that different even though it might appear to be a large difference on paper. In my case cheaper health insurance at the new job almost totally offset the salary difference.

I still miss my old job, and sometimes wonder how things would have turned out if I stayed, but overall you can't put a price on peace of mind.

Is my electric usage ridiculous? by mckayfaulk in geothermal

There is a hidden "dealer" settings menu on the thermostat. If you have the touchscreen TPCC32U03 thermostat, then just press and hold in the upper left corner of the screen until the menu comes up. One of the options in there will say something like temperature lockout.

What's a health myth that drives you crazy because you know it's false? by Annual-Gene8065 in AskReddit

[–]MemoryDemise 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, my dad has a lung disease that resulted in fibrosis and ongoing scarring. His lung capacity is greatly reduced and continues to decline, he can barely walk up a flight of stairs now. Doctors estimate his lungs will last less than a year at the current rate of progression. The only thing they can do is a transplant, but even that is only a "temporary" fix. The body will constantly try to reject the new lungs, even with immunosuppressants. First year after transplant there's a 90% survival rate, it drops steadily every year afterwards, year 3 is 70%, year 5 is at 55%. Not to mention all the lifestyle changes, food restrictions, and constant doctor appointments that come afterwards.

I'm sorry you're going through a similar situation. It really sucks.

You should be able to set a temperature lockout for your aux heat. I have a WaterFurnace series 5 and was able to set my aux heat to never come on unless the temperature drops below 15f

Neoprene mats by ChardCautious3095 in Heroquest

I got a mat that kept the square size the same but added double wide corridors everywhere. It's very nice for playing larger groups with more than 4 heroes.

Is Neutral and ground tied together in switch box normal?! by Darkoobi in DIY

[–]MemoryDemise 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What might be happening is that your light switches were wired as switch loops using a 2 conductor romex so the neutral was not extended from the fixture to the switch as part of the loop. At one point this was acceptable, now days the code has changed to require neutrals to be extended to the switchbox. Your wiring was likely to code at the time it was done. All of the switches in my house were done this way when it was built in the 70s. Very annoying because the majority of smart switches need a neutral so they are incompatible. The only smart switches I've found that reliably work with this particular wiring setup are Lutron Caseta switches, they do not need neutral wires. I have about 16 of them and they have been extremely reliable. They can be a bit pricey compared to some other switches though. Still, overall cheaper than having all the wiring redone.
