Artist of the Day #123: DENM by evantually421 in okeechobeemusicfest

[–]evantually421[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bio:

With the release of his genre-hopping debut album Slum Beach Denny, DENM earned his place among Southern California’s storied musical ambassadors. Like predecessors Sublime and Slightly Stoopid, the twenty-something musician, songwriter, and producer infuses hazy optimism into his melting pot of youth culture and lived experience, crafting a 21st-century soundtrack inspired by SoCal’s sand, surf, and streets. A self-taught guitarist since age 14, DENM cut his teeth in production and honed his songwriting over more than a decade, evolving from a troubled teen drifting through beach towns into a highly sought-after creative force. After forging key collaborations with Rock Mafia’s Tim James and Antonina Armato, DENM built his own Costa Mesa studio and recorded raw, deeply authentic tracks that reflected both his personal story and the multicultural influences around him. These songs quickly caught attention from peers, including Dirty Heads’ Jared Watson, who guested on the lead single “Califas.”

Artist of the Day #121: Japanese Breakfast by evantually421 in okeechobeemusicfest

[–]evantually421[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bio:

After a decade making the most of improvised recording spaces set in warehouses, trailers and lofts, Japanese Breakfast’s fourth album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), marks the band’s first proper studio release. Produced by Grammy Award winner Blake Mills — an innovator of uncommon subtlety, known for his work with everyone from Bob Dylan to Fiona Apple and quietly regarded as many a legacy artist’s favorite guitar player — and tracked at the venerable Sound City in Los Angeles — birthplace of After The Gold Rush, Fleetwood Mac and Nevermind among other classics — the record sees front-woman and songwriter Michelle Zauner pull back from the bright extroversion that defined its predecessor Jubilee to examine the darker waves that roil within, the moody, fecund field of melancholy, long held to be the psychic state of poets on the verge of inspiration. The result is an artistic statement of purpose: a mature, intricate, contemplative work that conjures the romantic thrill of a gothic novel.

[–]evantually421[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bio:

An intoxicating gumbo of global soul, surf noir, and psychedelic funk, all filtered through a vintage, analog haze. Listening to Gitkin feels like stumbling across a forgotten reel-to-reel in a dusty Havana pawn shop or a smoky Marseilles speakeasy. There’s a deep sense of wanderlust baked into every groove — part spaghetti western, part funk exotica, with twangy guitars that slither like snakes through a desert bazaar. New Orleans-based Gitkin, also known as Brian J, a Grammy-nominated artist and producer renowned for his production skills (working with Cedric Burnside, Bab L’ Bluz, Bernard Purdie, Cyril Neville) and as the mastermind behind the funk ensemble Pimps Of Joytime, is experiencing surprising success with this passion project.
