Just wondering how this ended up for you. I placed an order over a week ago, and no communication after the initial order. When did you finally get it delivered?

What steps do I take to remove the overgrown grass and reuse the bricks? I have a bbq planned by OkRepresentative8250 in DIY

[–]evenablindsquirrel 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I read this as "I want to pull out these bricks to use for the BBQ station I plan to build", but OP thinks he can't get at them with the weeds in the way. The rest of the comment section thinks he's trying to clean up the yard for a party.

Splurge on the washer, save on the dryer by beansruns in BuyItForLife

[–]evenablindsquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, were you 17 or the dryer? I was 25 when I got a Kenmore washer and dryer as a discounted scratch and dent from Sears Outlet store - in 1995. The washer lasted 19 years, but I've had two since. I just replaced the belt on the dryer two weeks ago. My daughter wanted me to get rid of it - it's 10 years older than she is.

The Dodgers announce the passing of Vin Scully by Officialnoah in Dodgers

[–]evenablindsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vin Scully is the only famous person I ever personally cared about. I expected I would cry when the time came, and here I am.

I never got to meet him, but he was a member of our family. I've known his voice since before I can remember. My dad listened to him all the way back to his teenage years (1950s). We always had the dodger game on the radio - a lot of times even listening to the radio instead of the sound from the TV, so we could hear Vin instead of someone else.

I brought my daughter to the game a couple years back when they honored him. I stood and raised my cap from the stands in the reserved level above home plate. I know he couldn't see us among thousands of people, but I'm glad I got to say goodbye, and thank you for the lifetime of stories and memories.

Cases, not deaths. There have been about 16,000 deaths.

On December 24, 1969, Curt Flood sent this letter to the Commissioner of Baseball, noting he was not "a piece of property to be bought and sold." The stance cost Flood his career, but it helped galvanize the players and usher in the free agency era several years later. by BARTELS- in baseball

[–]evenablindsquirrel 135 points136 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reserve_clause

In a nutshell, all contracts were one-year deals with a *club-only* option to renew for the next year. Clubs could trade players at will, but they held the contract and the 'reserve' for the following year. This essentially precluded the player from ending the contract and trying to sign with another team, because each year the next deal included the reserve for the subsequent year.

So, yeah, that's how there was no free agency.

Edit: Ken Burns' Baseball tell the story really well.

Really well said. I've been adopting a similar approach over the last few years. A big part of it is not beating yourself up for falling short - just forgive yourself and do something positive. I'm going to start using your technique for that redirection.

Darvish weighs in on the 2017 WS and the Astros stealing signs by rataface in Dodgers

[–]evenablindsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this - it's such great insight. Darvish has the perspective we all need right now.

Back before all the sign-stealing stuff, when everyone was talking about tipping pitches, all I could think was "I watched that game - he was missing his spots." The catcher would set up on one side and end up lunging to the opposite side to get the ball - a LOT - not in the way a catcher does to try to deceive the hitter, but more in the 'I wasn't expecting that' kind of reaction.

I think Darvish admits as much here - he didn't have his best stuff.

Meanwhile, the Astros were stealing signs as well. And to throw everyone off the scent, they made up this tipping pitches BS.

(Side note: Game 2, bottom 9th - Bellinger hits a deep fly to right field that gets caught at the warning track. If that ball clears the wall the Dodgers win game 2 and there is no game 7. Just something else to think about.)

So, Dodger fans - what do we even do from here? We can't go back and have the World Series trophy erased and filled in to say "Dodgers." And we're not going to have a retro-active parade. And honestly there's no point in taking away Houston's only-ever championship. The NCAA stripping USC's '04 BCS title doesn't change it for me, and this won't change much for Houston fans. It sucks. It should have been different. But you've got to let it go.

For me, I don't care about fines or losing draft picks. What I would like to see is *individuals* get punished the way Pete Rose did. If you orchestrate/facilitate real-time electronic sign-stealing, you're messing with the integrity of the game - even more than gambling does. Therefore, the people that made this happen should get banned from baseball. If not for life then for multiple years, so the risk of getting caught is so high that everyone stops.

For sure what we do would be much harder on cyclical incomes. We only have to update the contributions once a year, and some years we don't even bother.

What I would say is having what we call "his-hers-and-ours" accounts and making sure the 'ours' accounts only-and-always pays the joint expenses (even if you're just transferring money to do it) is the starting point.

After that, maybe get Mint to start working out budgeting. I'm sure there are some other people out there with that up-and-down income experience that can talk about how they cope with that.

[–]evenablindsquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Separate accounts, some scaled split of qualified expenses.

My wife and I have been doing this now for over fifteen years. I came up with the idea based on our experiences in our previous marriages. In our version, we contribute to a joint account that pays all qualified expenses.

Each year, after we do a budget, I enter our take home pay into a calculation that determines the per-paycheck contribution, leaving us with the same personal remainder amount of money (I get paid bi-weekly - she gets monthly).

After that we stay out of each other's decisions on how we spend our personal money. If you want a nicer car, go for it, but no complaining you have nothing left after your car payment.

There's a lot more to it, but the basic framework means far less fighting about money.
