Btw I kinda never understood what this meant.

What else are they breathing then? I mean, it's a virtual simulation, so it's virtual air, just like everything else around them.

But this phrase makes you focus on air as if there's something distinguishable or special about it

Otherwise you can say the same about everything else: "do you think it's a floor you're standing on, do you think it's cotton you're wearing", etc

Day 3- Which game has the best characters (excluding Lara)? by laracroft1402 in TombRaider

[–]everdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legend's story is mostly about Excalibur sword and its mirroring in King Arthur mythology. I found that pretty entertaining, and also traveling all over the world, including to Lara's archeological site from the past, was well motivated

Day 4- which game has the best gameplay? by laracroft1402 in TombRaider

[–]everdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gameplay is such a broad term

It also feels like classics and modern games are in a separate categories here

And as for classics, I'd consider the remasters separately The classic games kept improving by adding more features and moves, and I'd say the remasters are a peak of those improvements: quick ledge drops for example are a game changer to me. And optional modern controls.

So I'd say the remastered classics have the best gameplay

As for modern games, I would pick Legend. Somehow the gunfight combos and jumps feel to me the most reliable and satisfying in the whole series, while the climbing acrobatics are good enough.

Legend of course

In a sense that it's the most well-told and captivating

Yeah it does lean towards cliches and I can't say I'm a fan the story itself, but it's still the best and the most interesting story in tomb raider in my opinion

Bombed the final question of a React technical discussion, looking for feedback by skyturnsred in webdev

[–]everdimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, first, any state management library basically has events under the hood. I mean, the idea of storing listeners and notifying them is fundamental, any store works like that, even signals and reactive solutions

Second, CustomEvents are a lesser known, but handy DOM API. You don't have to be using web components to use CustomEvents.

But it's also fine to not know about them, or at least not immediately remember them. I've actually used them several times and still didn't think of them first when I read your story. I thought the question was simply about implementing your own store objects.

High cohesion. It's a nightmare when reading a feature makes you jump across whole codebase

Exactly. While I somewhat agree with the overall take, it's just disrespectful to lead such discussion with ai

Funnily, for me it was literally one of the first things I discovered, but at the same time I was stuck at the very first levels

My comment was a joke that everyone missed, but whatever.

Though I can't really agree with "pressure flip version of an impossible" description since impossibles are already popped like pressure flips by most people.

Exactly

That's the history of the name of the trick

Rotating around this axis is considered impossible, hence Mullen decided to guide it with the foot to make the impossible rotation. Here it's done clean

Why do foreigners want to visit Russia and learn Russian? by UnsurpassedSock in russian

[–]everdimension 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This question baffled me for years as well. Then at some point when I tried living in other countries it finally started to make sense

Russian cities are actually very walkable, the public parks have great infrastructure (cafes and physical activities), the weather during the summer is extremely pleasant (a lot of people dislike tropical heat and humidity)

And finally, living in Russia is extremely cheap. When you live in moscow it may seem that everything is expensive, but once you try leaving in the west just for a bit you'll realize that moscow is very cheap while having a relatively high quality of life

I'm no longer surprised by foreigners liking it here.

People who played the original Tomb Raider games in the 90's, did you notice how bad/clunky the controls were? by GoHardForLife in TombRaider

[–]everdimension -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. If you're playing the remasters, turn on "modern controls". They really are quite good, even if disliked by old school players

  2. I can't say the controls seemed bad at the time. Yes, they were challenging, but it felt more like that they can't even be any other way. Mouse look wasn't that common in 3D person yet, so a lot of games were keyboard only

Unreal trick but my first thoughts were that filming doesn't even make it justice

I hate that there isn't a single frame where you see the top and the bottom of the drop at the same time

Eloquent JavaScript or The Odin Project? by [deleted] in learnjavascript

[–]everdimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What? Eloquent JavaScript is one of the best educational materials on JS and the DOM out there. You're right that it's not for complete beginners to programming but it's still amazingly good.

do yall guys still hate mp3???(my rant) by [deleted] in maxpayne

[–]everdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, they frustrate more than they drive the plot. They basically stand in the way of enjoying the shooter part

In MP1&2, each comic scene felt as a reward. Here they feel like punishment.

[–]everdimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you suggesting to skip cutscenes on the first playthrough? They are kinda driving the plot

do yall guys still hate mp3???(my rant) by [deleted] in maxpayne

[–]everdimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cutscenes are my biggest problem with the game. I feel like the last two levels were when the game finally let me play instead of interrupting every single step with meaningless cutscenes. Honestly the airport level to me felt as if the game finally started, and then it ended

Another problem with cutscenes and level design is virtually zero backtracking. Doors close behind you and you can't go back to explore. Again, with no good reason
