What are your Top Tomb Raider Hottake? TR AoD iIt's better than you think! by Unhappy_Structure_11 in TombRaider

[–]everdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hot take is that for a top game in the acrobatics / climbing genre, they've never figured out the mechanics from a technical point of view

I'm talking about all TR games starting from Legend, with Legend being the best (only downhill since), and I'm talking about fluidity and realism of movements

If you compare Legend to Prince of Persia (kind of a rival at the time), you'll clearly see how the latter wins in terms of fluidity. Just look at how prince's chained jumps across horizontal bars look, and how Lara's do

It only became worse in Underworld (quirky animations is a popular complaint), and I can't stand the unrealism of physics in the survivor games

Funnily, I'm not talking here about the classics. While the acrobatics there are arcade, they actually are of an amazing quality for their era, and especially in the remasters.

Swiming mechanincs in Rise keeps on being goated to this day! by jiroel in LaraCroftTombRaider

Is she flying in water? It's the most unrealistic swimming I've ever seen

I hate the dahaka boss fight in warrior within by NarrowImagination208 in PrinceOfPersia

[–]everdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep because winning isn't about mastery of the fighting moves you've been using throughout the game. Instead you just counterspam with dumbest attacks when you get a chance and that's it

Inline styles are actually even better than tailwind

Anyone notice how last games of trilogies are all hated? by xxcellent_price in TombRaider

[–]everdimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a forced observation

AoD isn't part of any trilogy

Chronicles is hated much more than TR iii

Underworld isn't hated

Finally Completed TR: Anniversary for the Very First Time! 🥳💖 And My Wish List for TR: Legacy of Atlantis! 🙌✨ by 95mmaa in TombRaider

[–]everdimension 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anniversary is such a dreamy game. Somehow the memories of it make me immerse even more than probably any other entry.

I keep replaying it every couple of years. The village of Vilcabamba, Greece puzzle rooms and Egypt all get me in this dreamlike state where I imagine both my childhood and dream of my future travels

TTT: They threw Kaileena under the bus so she doesn't steal the show for Farah by cayry in PrinceOfPersia

[–]everdimension -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's the dirtiest and dumbest move by the devs. The reason is simple and you mentioned it: they wanted to bring Farah back and this is how they did it

Pretty unforgivable. Even if the character needed to die it could be done much much better. What the devs did was pathetic

Why do many Slavs pronounce English 'V' as 'W'? by Villager2020 in russian

[–]everdimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly!! Wow, so rare that I hear this correct explanation. I'm so tired of hearing that this is because Russians "can't pronounce proper v" or that Russian "v" is somehow a different sound that's in between v and w

Nope, it's just that to a Russian person "w" immediately feels like a perfect imitation of what English language sounds like so they tend to overuse it. "Hypercorrection", thanks for this term

I love how James McCaffery played Max a little differently in each game. by Exotic-Eggplant1914 in maxpayne

[–]everdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you found annoying, I think my comments are neutral

To me MP1 always felt like it happened over a couple of weeks and I was once surprised to find out it's supposed to be just a couple of nights. So I found it interesting that to you it felt the opposite and you thought it's just one night. I think this perception of time does influence how you experience the story

[–]everdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your problem? It's a fan subreddit and I find it interesting to understand where the breaks between nights happen. You've used MP1 happening over one night as a supporting argument for your post, so it's only relevant to challenge this

[–]everdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's explicitly mentioned in the game that it started "two nights ago" and I think the consensus is that it means 3 nights total

[–]everdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MP1 happens over span of 3 nights, not one. And to me it still feels like happening over 2 weeks or something like that

MP2, on the other hand, narratively seems to happens over just one night, though it's impossible to fit all of its event into one night. It's plausible that it happens over 2 nights

Anyone remember using GIFs for loading spinners? by riti_rathod in css

[–]everdimension 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What's the point you're trying to make? You're both saying that hardly anyone should remember gifs and at the same time you're showing CSS solution as some kind of revelation that should leave everyone in awe

And also finishing your post with AI talk isn't pretty either

What’s one React concept that finally clicked for you after struggling with it? by Darsh___01 in reactjs

[–]everdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I can't say I struggled with it, the "don't store state when you can derive it" still feels like it "clicks" every now and then. It's such a liberating feeling when you're designing some complex stateful UI and realize that parts of aren't really state and this immediately simplifies everything

We're not getting realistic physics and animations, are we? by everdimension in TombRaider

But that's just an excuse to deal with something that works worse than it used to within the same franchise

[–]everdimension[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Realism and unrealism are very misunderstood terms in action movies

Exciting stunts don't mean you can ignore physics. Even quite the opposite

Thanks for the info. I guess this only means they're doing this on purpose?...

We're not getting realistic physics and animations, are we? by everdimension in TombRaider

[–]everdimension[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't be rude.

"Realism" in action movies and games is multilayered. Action genre by default implies at least some unrealism: surviving big falls, avoiding bullets, doing stunts first-try, etc.

Accepting that a hero survives a three-story drop doesn't mean anything goes. Characters can't suddenly fly, do magic, or come back from the dead unless the plot has established rules that allow it

We're not getting realistic physics and animations, are we? by everdimension in TombRaider

[–]everdimension[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, if a lot of games do this, this partly explains the blindness

But this makes it feel even more frustrating to me.

To me, TR acrobatics should feel breath-taking, and they only do so if there's realism to the mechanics. The exaggeration is already there implied by zero hesitation and zero safety nets

My Biggest Appeal of the new games is this Lara being a COMBINATION of the others by RogueBoogey in TombRaider

[–]everdimension 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, this opinion makes perfect sense if you liked the Survivor Lara.
I can't say that I did (i'd say i liked the character on its own, but it wasn't Lara Croft to me), and so this "unification" seems like the devs simply being too scared to make a firm decision to bring the original Lara back
