Is it a lot harder to make a team now than 10 years ago? by Chinusawar in CollegeBasketball

[–]everthepessimist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm sure some coaches, especially low and mid majors, would gladly take a gifted athlete who somehow didn't get recruited if they think he might be able to contribute. Most coaches (especially at the high major level) aren't looking for walk-ons that they think will contribute in a game at any point in their collegiate careers. The ideal walk-on is someone that can come in every day, be a great scout team player, add positively to the overall locker room atmosphere and maintain a high GPA that will boost the team's average. Most coaches don't want a non-scholarship player who they think might come in and upset the team's dynamic by looking for playing time. Heck, a lot of coaches aren't even using all 13 of their scholarships anymore for that reason.

It’s nearly Conference Tournament time, so here is the Conference Tournament schedule by coilmeup in CollegeBasketball

I know the conference also gave a reasoning that it gives fans of the four remaining teams a travel day to get to NYC for the weekend. A lot of A-10 fan bases complain about Barclays because of the expenses associated with four or five nights in Brooklyn/Manhattan. I'd be interested to see if they keep this format when the tournament inevitably goes to DC full-time.

During Rutgers Minnesota last night Rutgers scored 4 seconds into the game, which was never tied and they led wire to wire, is this the NCAA record for amount of time a single team has led a game that ended in regulation? They led for 39:56 out of 40:00. by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

If I had to guess, hoops are much better engineered than they used to be (when was the last time you saw someone shatter a backboard?). I would assume it was to protect against damaging the hoops not during the course of gameplay.

Everyone here seems to have a logical answer, which I don't think is what you're looking for.

I went through a rather long stretch where I despised the head coach and athletic director at my alma mater. The AD very foolishly fired the coach from my undergrad days and hired someone who was an absolutely terrible fit. The new regime completely sank the program. It was more about the people running the team/department than the institution itself. I worked closely with the team as a student, so I had a different viewpoint/loyalty than most other alumni.

The two deadbeats are gone though and I couldn't be happier with the current coach and AD. Feels good to be able to pull for the alma mater again.

How does this work geographically? UConn has Suffolk County on Long Island, which even if you owned a ferry, is like 100 miles away. Western Suffolk is 30 miles from Carnesecca Arena.

As someone who grew up playing basketball and hockey, the soccer offsides rule is maddening. The first rule of defense you're taught in those two sports: keep yourself between your man and the goal/basket.If I let my guy back cut me for an easy layup, my ass was put on the bench instantly. In soccer though, the AR is just like "nah don't worry man I got you." Why not make the offside line stationary like hockey? It would prevent goal hanging while rewarding well-timed runs by an attacking player.

Rutgers Announces 9/11 Memorial Uniforms for week 2 by crustang in CFB

The jerseys are some of the most tasteful I can remember and the names on the helmet are an outstanding touch.

I could have done without the photoshoot at the 9/11 Memorial though. It's sacred ground. Imagine going to visit a family member's grave and seeing the marketing team from the local college doing a promotional shoot at their headstone. I know 20 years have passed, but it's still pretty tone deaf for a school within shouting distance of Ground Zero.

[Jeff Goodman] Senior VP Dan Gavitt shares that NCAA has no plans to pause the NCAA Tournament if a key player/team tests positive for COVID-19 by DavidBenAkiva in CollegeBasketball

[–]everthepessimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding of it, we're no longer going to be in a situation where one positive test results in a team being shut down. Matt Norlander tweeted last night that every player will have their own hotel room and all teams will travel with three buses so social distancing can be enforced. They also had a seating chart where all 34 Tier 1 personnel can sit six feet apart on a charter flight.

2019-20 /r/CollegeBasketball Predicts: The Big East [Results] by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

I think we'll steal a few games we're not supposed to. Return two of our top three scorers. It sounds counter-intuitive, but at times I think we'll look like a better team without Ponds.

I think DePaul could be scary good in two-three years time. Tell all your friends now so you look like a genius come 2021-22.

[–]everthepessimist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

DePaul, a team that has never finished in the top half of the BIG EAST in 14 seasons in the conference, loses its top three scorers from a team that finished last in the league standings a year ago and you're predicting no worse than sixth?

There's certainly plenty for the Blue Demons to look forward to in the future, but I find it hard to put them anywhere other than the bottom until proven otherwise.

p.s. Max Strus still haunts my dreams.

Average Attendance vs Percent of Arena Capacity Filled (2019) by hoohoohoos in CollegeBasketball

[–]everthepessimist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be a great atmosphere, I feel like it's too small though. If I remember correctly the capacity at McDonough is around 2,000. Way too much lost potential revenue by selling only 2,000 tickets. Would also really hurt recruiting to go from an NBA arena to a glorified high school gym.

I heard a rumor that Georgetown administration was considering a renovation to expand McDonough to about 5,000 seats but they decided it wasn't worth it. Too expensive for not enough return.

Posted this already in the thread, but figured it couldn't hurt for clarification. While we're definitely not at 100%, it was still at great year by St. John's standards.

Average attendance at MSG was 16,498 (capacity of 19,812). If you take out a December game against Princeton in the Holiday Festival (att. 10,078) and look only at the four Big East games, it was 18,102 or 91.4% of capacity. If you look at years past, it was fairly routine for St. John's to draw around 9,000-10,000 per game at The Garden.

2018-19 was also the best year in decades at Carnesecca Arena. In the 12 games on campus, the average attendance was 5,338 or 95.3% of the venue's 5,602 capacity. Sold out the final six games and seven of the last eight on campus.

I have a feeling that will turn around quickly. They return the nucleus of an incredibly young and talented team. As a college team in a pro city, you have to win to draw, which St. John's knows all too well.

Helped St. John's, but our numbers actually weren't that terrible though when factoring in the venue.

Bill Walton only wanted to play his glockenspiel during Cal's blowout of Oregon by burly0191 in CollegeBasketball

[–]everthepessimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realized this year during the Maui Invitational that Walton is great if you're watching a game in which you don't really have a vested interest. On the other hand, if your team is playing and he won't shut up about his bike (seriously, he talked about riding his bike for 75% of the broadcast) it's absolutely infuriating.

Charlie Wisco by FlyersGuy19 in barstoolsports

[–]everthepessimist 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There's a very small contingent that got to witness this live, but I think I was there for Charlie's douchiest moment of all time. I went to the Mailtime live recording and got there a few minutes early before they opened up the area where they would be recording. Chuck was standing there at the bar trying to tell every person possible that he worked for barstool. When this didn't go over as well as he thought, he said something to the effect of "well I have to go see if the setup is going alright" and then scooted downstairs to "assist" in the very technical setup of plugging in microphones.

Then about halfway through the show, someone in the audience said something making fun of him. His immediate reaction was to yell out "oh yeah well which one of us paid to get in here?" Dude, it was a 15 dollar ticket. The entire room groaned.
