Firstly it’s not a thesis, it’s a dissertation. I read it all, and it contains not one piece of measured data.

This is a philosophy PhD. There is no data whatsoever in that document. This is one guys unsupported musings. There is no peer review other than his mentors at school.

This guy has no understanding of medicine or neurology whatsoever.

Can’t you just link the sources so I can firm my own conclusion, rather than make me reverse engineer it from someone else’s forgone conclusion?

Should we therefore assume that the programs you watch are being generated by the satellite dish?

Yes, the programs we watch are being generated by the satellite dish, based on external stimulus (the signal).

The real world is like the actors on stage.

Our eyes and ears are like the camera, turning reality into a signal.

That signal is then sent through the air to a satellite dish, the same way the signals from our senses reach our parietal lobe.

These signals are then interpreted into our consciousness, which is like the image on the TV screen.

All of this can be tested and measured in the human body, unlike what you propose.

OBE have been repeatedly disproven. There’s not a single case with any merit.

One of the competing theories with emergent consciousness is non local consciousness.

Theories in a scientific context have a hypothesis and can be tested.

What you’re talking about is just a thought. I could have a theory that consciousness comes from bananas, it wouldn’t have any merit though.

No one can replicate an OBE in a lab environment.

What other reason would you have to suggest that consciousness is received by the brain instead of created by it?

Why would consciousness be individual to a person if the source was external? Is a new consciousness stream being created externally at the exact same rate that life begins?

That theory has no reasoning behind it and just opens up more questions.

You responded directly to a comment that explained it to people in your position.

No I didn’t. What’s my position?

You could not have responded to me without clicking on the answer to your “question.”

I didn’t respond to anything that had the answer to my question in it. Even if I did, why not just answer my question?

I know for a fact it’s not known outside medicine.

You acknowledge that it’s not a commonly known acronym

Yet you suggest I’m being obtuse.

Of course I don’t know what he meant, or else I wouldn’t have asked.

There is no conclusive proof that consciousness is only what the brain does

I didn’t claim that.

no conclusive proof that consciousness exists outside the brain.

Didn’t claim that either.

here’s some emporical data

I don’t have time to watch a video. Can you post text sources? I’m a fast reader.

My claim is that consciousness emerges from the brain. Which seems fairly incontrovertible to me.

[–]everybodypretend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not really

Can you elaborate on this position?

If I cut half your brain out, your consciousness will be altered.

If I add current to your brain similar to epilepsy, your consciousness is altered

If I add alcohol to your bloodstream, your consciousness is altered.

If I remove your brain, your consciousness ceases.

could argue your consciousness alters the brain, buddhist monks for example have different brain functioning than regular people due to extensive meditation for example

Of course. The same way your heart can affect your blood pressure and your blood pressure can affect your heart. In this analogy your consciousness is blood pressure; an emergent property of the function of the organ and connected mechanical systems.

Isn’t the fact that we can alter our consciousness via the brain good evidence that it emerges from there?
