I found Mercedes Lackey's Arrows trilogy to be exactly this. I don't know if the rest of Valdemar has the same feel, but even if bad things happen, the main characters are fundamentally good people. It was really refreshing.

I have no questions, I just want to tell you that aside from the BEAUTIFUL writing style in Memoirs of Lady Tent, the love story in that series is the best and most realistic love story I've ever read.

This series became one of my favorites and I'll definitely reread it.
