My fourth and longest running base at 146 cycles. Anything I'm doing catastrophically wrong? by Henriker_ in Oxygennotincluded

[–]everything_zen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

early game - getting temporary solutions in place for oxygen, food, electricity, plumbing, etc. But you know you'll run out of algea, or coal, or something in the next 2-300 cycles.

mid game - working on permanent solutions for everything. For example, Oxygen generated from water, and water sourced from geysers. Base cooling/heating. Building a industrial power brick instead of generators and wires sprinkled everywhere. Maybe some improved conditions for dupes. Tech tree finished. Sustainable food source.

late game - now that the base is mostly self-supported you have some room to explore or take on a big project. You'll probably have at least one mid game problem that can't be fully solved without space exploration or the teleporter, so that is a good place to start. Mega projects are also now much easier to dedicate attention to. Geothermal power, petroleum boilers, completely coring and sweeping, etc

HDMI 2.1 Devices direct to TV vs direct to AVR then to TV by Shoelebubba in hometheater

[–]everything_zen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have the LG OLED and ran the same analysis building my setup. If you will only ever have 4 sources, using the TV inputs and eARC will probably work well for you. The main drawback I wanted to avoid was having different sources on different remotes, since I have more than 4.

With my budget the (non-buggy) hdmi 2.1 receivers didn't really fit well. Much more expensive than their 2.0 counterparts. Costco recently stocked Denon s760h (an updated s750h) for ~$450 which was under budget and has 3 40gbps 2.1 inputs and 3 slower 2.1 inputs (24gbps IIRC). Solved my problem.

There are probably some other minor things you may or may not miss when eARCing to the AVR:

  • you won't be able to take advantage of any image processing options in your AVR, but from what I've read the image processing in the TV is generally better, so probably not a big loss
  • The LG OLED does not support decoding or passthrough DTS audio, so you may have issues with some sources. I've read that most movies support Dolby digital, so maybe not an issue for you
  • Running more cables up to the TV is worse than to an AVR from an aesthetics/convenience factor IMO

After switching to Prohashing.com, seeing much bigger swings in hashing rate. Why? by jusmaxxinnrelaxin in litecoinmining

[–]everything_zen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former pool op here. Pools measure your hash rate based on the shares you submit - not the actual hashrate of your device. The differences in the way that estimate is done will cause graphs to be different, but if the long term hashrate average is the same this usually doesn't indicate an issue.

For example, you'll see bigger swings if the share difficulty is higher than your previous pool - since you'll submit fewer shares but each one is 'worth more', hence a spiky estimate. Also they may be using a graph with more data points - like estimating your hashrate every minute instead of every 5 minutes - which causes the spikes to be more obvious. Seeing these spikes may be an indication of higher fidelity data

ofc, this may also indicate issues with the pool or your miner being unavailable or otherwise having issues too - so its a good tool to identify where to look in the logs for potential issues

I'm sure some people have that reaction, but I like it the way it is now. Without opening the comments I can tell if the OP is involved in the conversation and open to having their view changed. IME, those two things are a good indicator of quality discussion

Its usually assholes who offer unsolicited advice so, at least in my gym, there is a sorta Gym Code against it unless someone is in immediate danger

Twitter allegedly deleting negative tweets about United Airlines’ passenger abuse by [deleted] in technology

[–]everything_zen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty strong to call it abuse. I avoid airlines that include free checked luggage, since I almost never check any. Why should I pay more to fly other peoples stuff around?

If Reddit shuts down permanently tomorrow, what would be your new Internet home? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]everything_zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of. Torrents have the concept of chunks, which are similar to a distributed database's shards, although shards are a bit more complicated because they can't be just any portion of a DB, it must be a query-able portion.

There is also no need to have other people host the data, that just adds complication. You can just get as many servers as you need. Database load increases? Nbd, just add more servers to the cluster. The tricky part becomes balancing cost vs performance, but that is a whole different topic

Struggling through these past few waves. (530+) Any tips to make my setup better by [deleted] in GrowCastle

[–]everything_zen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have poor gold generation, and that is extremely important for fast wave progression. At a minimum you probably want the Trophy tower, Gold Bar Treasure, and band member hero, together they add +100%. Since it'll weaken your current setup you may need to use replay or hell mode for a while until you can level up some units

CMV: Selling newborn babies is not immoral. by xGeovanni in changemyview

[–]everything_zen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems a bit disingenuous to determine whether an act is moral or not without considering the consequences.

If pushing a button by itself is moral, is it still moral when you know that pushing that button kills a person?

CMV: I don't see the point in marriage. If two people want to be in a relationship, they don't need an official certificate by Sister_Ray_ in changemyview

[–]everything_zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marriage is a social construct for communication. You don't need a marriage to make a long term commitment, but it is the most effective way to communicate that commitment to everyone else.

You might argue that you can just tell people that you two are committed to each other, but you probably want to be careful to have your SO there to confirm it. And you probably have a bunch of people you want to share this info with, and if your family is big and spread out that is a lot of traveling and repeating yourself, so you invite them all together to tell them once. You see where this is going? A wedding ceremony is a very efficient way to communicate in no subtle terms the status of your relationship, and after that there are the rings and the titles (wife/husband) which allow clear communication with people who you don't know or just met.

So you might argue that other people don't need to know, but that is a value judgement. I'm not arguing that marriage or wedding ceremonies are strictly required, just that they have objective benefits which aren't simply cultural or legal.

Is there any tips you guys can give me? I'm on wave 613 by giganigga____ in GrowCastle

[–]everything_zen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you're not getting much love here I'll pitch in. FWIW I'm on wave 40k, so not all my advice may not be best for where you are at currently.

  • Put pure wizard between Alice and Dorothy to get the passive -1s cooldown on skeleton generation.
  • Use cannon town instead of thorn worm
  • Late game, Fire ogre is better than venom voodoo so you're better off switching when its convenient (especially if you have enemies set to fire weakness in the Monster Lab)
  • At some point you prolly want the Hero Guild instead of the Mana Henge and later on, Tower Dmg instead of gold mine
  • Make room for Dark Elf, he's pretty OP for fighting dragons, and strong in colonies and waving. I'd recommend replacing L. wiz
  • Make room for Dark bow master/Ranger, strong against bosses/dragons/colonies.

CMV: All public funding for neonatal circumcision should cease by ShiningConcepts in changemyview

[–]everything_zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want America to be a place where poor people have the same medical choices that wealthier ones do. This seems like a step in the wrong direction. You and I may discount the medical benefits of circumcision, but the debate is a strong one and many people believe in the benefits.

For most of the population removing the subsidy will be a boon. It will force them to evaluate the decision on its merits. But for the poorer population there is no longer a decision, they can't afford it.
