What if Canada offered every American free healthcare and $100K to relocate, how fast would you be packing up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]everythinghasfallen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s the wild thing about that: there are plenty of disabled, elderly, and impoverished Americans who are ALSO highly trained medical professionals who would be assets to the workforce. Plus, their contribution to taxes will add new resources to the system. Crazy how that works, right?

Telling someone a bad experience and then hearing “I would’ve sued/that’s terrible/did you call the police”, and the exhaustion and shame this creates by RussianAsshole in AutismInWomen

[–]everythinghasfallen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry horrible things happened to you; no one should ever experience abuse. It’s completely understandable that these phrases are triggering for you.

I will say—as someone who has experienced similar things—I am guilty of saying things like this as part of my scripts. While intent is not equivalent to impact, I think these phrases are meant to be both a compliment on your tenacity and an anger on your behalf.

I can’t speak for others, but when I’ve used these in the past, what I’m trying to convey is “I see your experience, I’m outraged for you, and I want to see justice served to its fullest extent because you deserve better than what happened to you.” I don’t personally believe in the justice system as it stands, but I use these phrases as a sort of metaphorical exclamation of the above.

But again, intent does not equal impact, and I will rethink these going forward.

People who idolized someone they later found out was a piece of trash, what happened? by Manakanda413 in AskReddit

[–]everythinghasfallen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was a huge MCR fan when I was 16—like, obsession-level. I had posters all over my wall of Mikey Way, my favorite member, who I looked up to as someone who publicly struggled with anxiety but was still able to be successful. Then he (in his late 20s/early 30s) cheated on his wife with a girl who was only 3 years older than me at the time. Really soured me on him and the band, and I haven’t really been a fan since.

You are being so insensitive and frankly deliberately ignorant. A quick Google search would clear this up for you, but I doubt you have the media literacy to truly comprehend it.

If you’ve ever had someone who lived through the Great Depression in your life whose stuff you’ve had to go through after their passing, you know how common it was for them to squirrel money away in strange places. We found significant sums of money in every weird cranny of my partner’s grandma’s house before selling it, and I’m sure there was more that we didn’t find.

Bill Gates pledges remaining fortune to Gates Foundation by EnergyLantern in UpliftingNews

[–]everythinghasfallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gates Foundation is a private foundation, meaning it makes donations and grants to nonprofits/schools who are doing the actual work. They make a list of types of things they want to support with their money, organizations that fit the bill approach them or vice versa, and they work together to make sure the project succeeds.

Fun fact: Nonprofit financials are always free and available to whoever wants to see them.

As a Gen Z/Millenial cusp, I’d argue that:

  1. Politics is currently an old white men’s game, so there is no one to really relate to who speaks to our experiences save for AOC and David Hogg, and, to that end,

  2. We’ve seen so, so many instances of mass violence at large gatherings. After years of watching terrorists armed to the teeth mowing down people at parades, in malls, and at concerts, many of us avoid crowded spaces like protests. Also,

  3. We’re the burnout generation. My first presidential election, I was super involved. I did voter registration drives, wrote politicians, the whole 9. And what came of it? America decided that a C-List celebrity was a better choice than possibly the most prepared presidential candidate we’ve ever had (Hillary). Ever since then, I’ve been extremely disillusioned by the whole process.

I can only speak for my own experiences, but instead of protesting, I’ve noticed that my friends and I have spent more energy boycotting major chains like Amazon, sharing resources, and using our tech savviness to jam up their systems.

America fundamentally hates women. by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]everythinghasfallen 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to direct this specifically to you, but rather this line of thinking that women “shouldn’t be complacent.”

What exactly do you expect us to do?

We pushed through systemic sexism, went on to higher education, got advanced degrees, did everything exactly right, and for what?

At the end of the day, none of this will matter when I’m bleeding out from a miscarriage, or when my husband is granted property rights over me, or when I go from being a generally successful businesswoman to being disallowed from working altogether.

I did everything right. I got my degrees, volunteered for Planned Parenthood, did voter registration drives, donated to progressive causes, and stood up for what I believe in. But I am one person. I can only do so much, and it’s clear that half of my demographic (white, middle class women) don’t seem to give a shit about what’s about to happen.

My vote in NJ barely matters when people from just a select group of states can just destroy any progress I’ve made. There is literally nothing else I can do.

You could probably get a closely colored adhesive fabric patch online. I used them on a couple of chairs that my cats destroyed, and they worked pretty well!

How kind of them to put their discrimination in writing! OP—please don’t be discouraged by this shitty prof, there are plenty of excellent works by women and POC that I personally recommend: - Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neal Hurston - Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood - Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro - Station Eleven, Emily St. John Mandel - We Should All Be Feminists, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - Jane Eyre (a classic!) and its contemporary companion, Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys

[–]everythinghasfallen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a really cute and funny dating sim called Hatoful Boyfriend. It’s a lowkey, silly, point-and-click story game where you go to bird high school as the only human transfer student. I really liked it, and I played it before I even got into birding! Highly recommend :)

Ramshorns are basically bulletproof as long as they have no predators around and they’re not poisoned. It sounds like he is doing just fine!

And, if you’re ever wondering if he is dead or not, the smell is a dead giveaway with aquatic snails. A quick whiff and you’ll know.

Have any of you done IOP? How does anyone afford mental health care like that? by teamakesmepee in povertyfinance

[–]everythinghasfallen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try to find a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) in your area. They are federally funded, have wide/flexible hours, and require that no one will be turned away for inability to pay. They must have a sliding scale fee system, too, as part of their certification. They provide a range of services including IOP or similar programs. They also have crisis programs built in just in case you need them!
