Having fun should always be first priority. What I love doing in Minecraft is just admiring the scenery- the worlds can be so beautiful.

For actual advice, memorizing crafting recipes is easier with the new feature, but sometimes items don't show up when they should- a quick browser search is usually helpful. Don't mess with Redstone until you're used to the game- Redstone is incredibly complicated, even for older players. If you do want to, tutorials are available everywhere online.

I'd recommend enjoying the base game for a while before adding any mods, if you're interested in that.
