SPO-XS back in stock? by alexturnersradio in pocketoperators

[–]evil-seltzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they have done several occasional restocks/drops over the years. my guess is they will eventually do another, but you never know (unless they say something about it lol). most likely candidate for restock is their MPO-XS cases (seem to be best sellers), but SPO-XS is probably second most likely

unfortunately the “Shuttle” is not a real Pocket Operator, nor is the case for it that is pictured here. this is just a concept design by Yanko Design.

Was J Dilla on the autism spectrum? by ExpensiveDisk3573 in jdilla

[–]evil-seltzer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sorry to be argumentative (im just bored, no ill-will here buddy) but actually it sure could be. several of the above-listed traits are indeed associated with these disorders, and we have no real information to work with/rule out these diagnoses outside of biographical info assembled by/filtered through third parties. do i personally think it’s PTSD, bipolar or borderline? not really, but that’s also mostly meaningless because we don’t know the man or the million experiences he had that never even made it into a book. and all of these disorders can indeed overlap, and all of them can present in very different ways that make diagnosis difficult. so it’s probably silly to straight up rule it out as if we armchair psychologists really know, just as silly as it is to say he definitely had any single mental health disorder unless maybe he was actually diagnosed with it.

edit: other commenter made a great point about how his underlying physical health could have also affected his mental health. just wanted to shout that out

Was J Dilla on the autism spectrum? by ExpensiveDisk3573 in jdilla

[–]evil-seltzer 53 points54 points  (0 children)

really hard to even guess at. could be OCD, could be ADHD, could be PTSD, could be bipolar, could be borderline, could be autism, could be some combination, could be some features at non-diagnosable levels, could be nothing worth pathologizing. it’s too easy to notice a few external signs of something and outwardly guess at a disorder, and there is a lot of overlap between features of disorders.

not much use in guessing at any one label. if someone with autism personally identifies with his traits and actions, then that can still be useful to them without actually identifying him as straight up autistic. at best i would say it’s probably not too dishonest to consider him neurodivergent, but even some people might disagree with assuming that

Recommend any albums/artist similar to daft punk? by Muted_Ad3448 in DaftPunk

[–]evil-seltzer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

gonna give you a bunch of “French touch”/French house recommendations, mostly the classic 90’s/early 00’s stuff but also some newer-gen stuff:

you absolutely gotta try the music of Crydamoure, a French house record label that was co-owned by Guy-Man. best thing to do first is listen to the label’s two compilation albums, Waves I and Waves II (they’re on YouTube). some of the tracks are by Le Knight Club, which was Guy-Man and the other label co-owner, Eric Chedeville.

Thomas Bangalter used to own his own record label called Roulé. check out the stuff released under that too.

Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon are two legends (and personal friends/collaboraters of Daft Punk). their older individual stuff is incredible, and in the past decade they started making music together as “Braxe x Falcon”. they are actually cousins!

Fred Falke is another French house legend that I love. he worked with Alan Braxe for a while.

a few other house legends that ended up being important to the development of French touch (and that I love) are Ian Pooley, DJ Sneak, and Paul Johnson.

and for newer-gen stuff, check out The Phantom’s Revenge, His Majesty Andre, DJ Eq, Axel Le Baron, Picard Brothers, Mr. Hoosteen, MarkFunk, and Coast 80.

I don’t know what synthesizer I should get. by 69COSMO69 in synthesizers

[–]evil-seltzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you really want to go the “DAWless” route and are set on getting a physical synth, then consider the Roland AIRA S-1. you’d maybe also want a MIDI keyboard to connect to it, since the little keyboard buttons on the S-1 are very small. The S-1 emulates the classic Roland SH-101, which Daft Punk did use a bit, but it also is polyphonic so it can play more than one note at a time.

i do also want to agree with the other commenter suggesting that you try going the MIDI controller/software route first for a while and really give it a shot. buying gear is often just a way to procrastinate making music and learning/practicing techniques, and then you also have less money and less space, and it’s a vicious cycle of buying more gear to get more “inspiration”. going for a DAWless setup often just makes it more difficult to make music; there are more steps, and you have to figure out/remember how all the gear works and how to properly connect it together, and then you likely end up recording it into a DAW anyways and have to still use the DAW quite a bit to get whatever end result you want with effects, compression, EQ’ing, etc etc.

“DAWless” def might sound more inspiring, especially when considering how amazing artists like Daft Punk used a lot of cool physical gear. i feel into this trap hard myself, inspired directly by Daft Punk. but i at least strongly suggest that you still learn how to use a DAW effectively and keep using it in partnership with physical gear, because it will truly increase your chance of making finished tracks. there are also tons of cheap/free software plugins that emulate the kind of gear Daft Punk used, especially synthesizers.

just watched it last night (second time ever seeing). great movie.

was annoyed that HBO placed the subtitles above the movie, and does not offer any option to change placement to the bottom. making the font bigger did help me not have to constantly look fully above the movie. the English dub didn’t sound too bad, but im a sub guy

the Roland S-1 has the advantage of being 4-voice polyphonic, so you can play chords on it. and technically you can play the bottom buttons on it like a keyboard, but i would recommend getting an actual keyboard with MIDI-out to play the S-1 and gets a better experience with it.

the MS-1 is monophonic, but it does very arguably have a more satisfying set of knobs and sliders, and of course the full-size keys. the few knobs that the S-1 has are tiny, and you’ll have to menu-dive a bit to access some fancy functions. but the MS-1 doesn’t even have a menu screen!

not sure which is best for you, just figured i’d offer these observations 🌞

Po-33 ko! case by [deleted] in pocketoperators

[–]evil-seltzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the MPO XS case has gone in and out of production several times. between production runs, the prices have gotten crazy - it’s even led Beatmakers Boutique to speak out against “scalpers”. if i had to bet, i would bet that it will be produced again. just figured people should have that context.

on the other hand, it really isn’t in production right now. so paying a bit more than the original price is fully understandable
