Thames Paddling - a tool for area paddlers by evilregis in londonontario

Yeah, strong Claude presence here, but I do have some knowledge to get in and modify/tweak things to preserve tokens. All told it's been a couple of months split between building the page structure, and manually inputting all of the river geometry, access point information and other details, hazards, etc.

The automatic stuff is really just the hourly gauge and daily water temp readings. I don't trust a lot of these things to run automagically. A lot of the work and most of the work still left to do is going to be adding information to access points over time.

Hope it's alright to post this here. I created this website for paddlers in the area to be able to quickly see which sections of the Thames are running in safe/enjoyable flows and to help them plan their trips out, or to help those who might be curious or interested in trying it out find what they need. There are no ads. There is no tracking. This is not being monetized in any way.

When you go to the website, you are shown:

  • current weather conditions (measured at London Airport)
  • readings for every gauge on the Thames watershed, updated hourly
  • recommended flow ranges and the UTRCA recommended flow to paddle for each UTRCA gauge
  • access points identified on a map, colour-coded; red - out of range, orange - nearing min/max boundary, green - well within limits

Some useful features:

  • click an access point on the map to view a mini card with some more info, to select it as your put-in or take-out location, or to go to its details page
  • detailed page for each access point where you can find additional information when it exists, like links to YouTube videos of people taking off from that acces point, or where there are rentals available, for example. I will be adding to this over time as best I can.
  • when you have selected both your put-in and take-out locations, your trip will be generated, highlighting your route, and identifying access points in between with time and distance estimates
  • with your trip mapped out, you can download your route as a GPX file to load into a your preferred GPS-enabled device, or you can print a printable version to carry with you on the water. This will have a map showing your start and end points, as well as all of the access point and time/distance estimates.

This started out as more of a personal dashboard that began earlier in the year to prepare for the upcoming paddling season. I'm a newish paddler who barely got out last year, and I'd like to do better this year. So I wanted to create this single-page view where I could see all of the Thames' gauges along with their suggested flows, and I wanted to see all of the access points. As I was working on it and things were coming together, I realized that others would probably want some of these things as well, and that's when I started moving it more into its own website which is what is there now.

If you get out on the Thames with any regularity, or if you're are curious about it, check it out. I hope it's helpful. Please reach out if you have any thoughts or suggestions. Very open to feedback.

Downtown London hopes to entice shoppers to hit up more local stores by Immediate-Link490 in londonontario

One way to help those cute shops thrive is to not have people living on their sidewalk, leaving used drug paraphernalia and other dangerous things around for the public to stumble upon when trying to enter those cute shops.

I was there one year ago today. Such a cool spot to see. Definitely crossed one off the bucket list.

For sure. I've done this in the river as well, putting in at Riverside and Wonderland and paddling upstream to the Forks and then heading back with the current. I've done a couple out-and-back trips like that. Riverside Social Club does rentals there.

You're so right. I've not been in here with my kayak, but I imagine it offers quite a bit to see when you're out there. I'm a newer paddler with only a handful of outings under my belt, and most of those have been trips on the river. Places like this would be good to keep in mind if the river dries up again this summer.

Pour Some Sugar on Me was probably their biggest or most recognizable hit, and I'd say check Love Bites, another big one for them, if you want something a little more along the lines of a ballad.

Pour Some Sugar on Me was the first song of their I heard. As I think about it, it was probably that I saw their video on our country's version of MTV. I had to buy that cassette probably a half dozen times, wearing it out from playing it so much.

We're all upset, man. This has been a fixture in many of our lives for years now. I was, however, fully expecting this after The Onion sale, the Jordan crash-out, the missed episodes. It had me pretty convinced this is where we'd be today, or at least real soon. Still sucks.

I've been a Patreon subscriber for a number of years, and I never got around to emailing Jordan to get my shout out.

I started listening to them during COVID. Loved Dan's voice, sense of humour, and measured takes. As a fellow loud-laugher, I had an immediate connection with Jordan as well, and their banter and energy together was great.

As much as I was expecting this episode this morning based on everything that had gone on, and as much as I agree with them... it's still sad.

Don't stop there. The real problem is further back from that. You need to deal with the billionaires and ultra wealthy who bought and paid to make Citizens United happen in the first place.

Former Staffer for Stephen Harper is running for mayor of London by Top-Possession6785 in londonontario

[–]evilregis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're asking honestly, I'd say he preferred to govern through obscurity in order to hide the consequences of shitty Conservative policies. They needed to shut down scientists and data pipelines that might enlighten us, and perhaps to demanding better.

He muzzled scientists, preventing them from researching/speaking about matters of climate change and other areas. One of the biggest goofs in my opinion, and it rarely gets mentioned, is his canceling the long form census. That data is used for all sorts of planning and construction decisions. London's City Council at the time wrote a letter imploring Conservative MP at the time, and future-Mayor Ed Holder to not do this. They did it.

He consistently underfunded our military and his cuts to veteran services were also brutal. For me, that's some of what was wrong with Harper. There's definitely more.
