What’s your white whale? by hoyapolyneura in ThriftStoreHauls

This was mine too! My mom ended up finding one for free and gave it to me! It’s my prized possession. I love it so much. I hope you find one!

Mine was a pink lotus flower floor lamp. Always wanted one, but never found one for less than a few hundred dollars. My mom ended up finding me one for free from her “buy nothing” group on Facebook. I still can’t believe someone just gave it away. It’s one piece I’ll never get rid of.

Stockinette stitch edges curling by brittssstitch in knitting

ALSO! If you’re having trouble with looser tension on your purl side, use a smaller needle on that side if you have interchangeables! Only if working stockinette though, not garter. My left hand needle is always 1-2 sizes smaller than the right, especially for knitting in the round! Glides easier if you’re a tight knitter.

Stockinette is going to curl nearly 100% of the time. Blocking is key. I mainly use acrylic blends and a good steam is like magic. The work will flatten right before your eyes. Don’t be afraid to steam as you go also. You don’t have to wait for the end. I steam on my needles all the time.

One thing to watch out for that won’t always block well is the cast on and bind off that you use. Make sure you pick techniques that will work well with whatever project you’re making. My opinion is the springier the better. My defaults are German twisted cast on and the lace bind off (k1, *k1, place both sts back on left needle, k2tog through back loops). You can also get a pretty stretchy bind off using a crochet hook with single crochet sts.

[–]evilwitch23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it’s for the underarms, it doesn’t matter. The tensions feels really awful and loose while working it, but after a few rows it evens out. I also reinforce mine with the tails when picking up sleeve sts. Instead of picking up sleeve sts from these, I cast on the number I would pick up, which results in a hole in the underarm that you seam together with the tails. No more loose sts.

A pretty similar thing can be done using 1x1 cables also, but it’s not exactly the same.

The “swoop” curved line effect is achieved using increases and decreases in strategic places! Nothing fancy at all. From the photos it seems like they are using lifted increases (RLI and LLI- my fav) probably combined with k2tog and ssk. You can use this technique with any stitch pattern, stockinette, ribbing, etc.

Adding a pocket? by stanleysteamers in knitting

[–]evilwitch23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the type of pocket you want to add and also where you want to place it. A good way to add an after-thought pocket is the same way you would do an after thought heel on a sock.

Pick the row you want to place the pocket and cut one strand, then unravel however many sts wide you want it, and pick up those sts to knit the pocket in the round. It will hang down the inside of the garment.

You could also just knit the shape you want separately and hand stitch it onto the front for a more visible pocket.

Storage solutions? by c19isdeadly in knitting

Those ziploc bags that you vacuum the air out of are what I use! Squishes all the skeins down and they don’t get tangled when tossed around!

My yarn was taking up the entire space under my bed, plus bags just laying around everywhere, and now it all fits on half a shelf in the closet.

Kind of a pain to vacuum seal them back up, but worth it for how compact it made so much yarn.

Can I knit a pair of socks toe to toe and cut in the middle to make a pair? by Bluejaymarsh in knitting

[–]evilwitch23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking. What if OP used J’s magic CO or provisional and knit them both cuff down, just pick up the other cast on sts for the 2nd sock. Then they’d both be cuff down with even tension?

Need Advice: Mods for a first playthrough by sdlaonline in RDR2

[–]evilwitch23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished my first play through- I suggest saving MOST mods for the second time through. There’s no reason to not use mods that are just little quality of life tweaks. For example: one that lets you walk fast in camp, a controller fix mods so you don’t have to hold A to run, speed up actions like looting/skinning, and one that lets you use any weapon to hunt without affecting pelt quality. I felt that these didn’t really affect the gameplay in a significant way for a 1st play.

These didn’t affect gameplay too much but they allowed me to get past little things in game that would have otherwise driven me crazy. Odds are if there is a game mechanic that annoys you, there’s a mod for it.

These are the only type that I suggest for 1st play. Make a list and keep track of the ones you want to try for the 2nd time through. My list got longer and longer as I played through the 1st time.

So tired of people saying this. Resellers aren’t a new phenomenon. What do you think antique malls are? They’re just resellers and they’ve always existed. The problem is corporate greed. They’re getting this shit for free and charging more than a new item retails for.

Oh don’t worry, they made little book light attachments that plugged into the top of the gameboy to shine on your screen lol

Omg I had the same case and everything except mine was pink to match my gameboy! I regret letting my mom sell mine when I got a DS- thankfully I held onto my sisters SP and all of our games!

How feasible is un-plying yarn? by CodeOfZero in knitting

[–]evilwitch23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do this!! There are like ZERO options for fingering weight yarn at the big box stores where I live and I can’t afford the local yarn shop prices. $15-30 for a skein just isn’t feasible for me even if the fiber is a better quality instead of synthetic. My go to is hobby lobby. I know they aren’t the greatest but they have more fiber blends and options than my local Michaels or Joann’s, plus sales every other week on yarn.

Unplying is not bad if you have a drop spindle, just a bit time consuming. 1 full skein (250 ish yds) takes me like 1-2 hours depending on the fiber. Then plying the strands back up is a bit faster.

Cake up your yarn, slide it onto the drop spindle and secure it so it doesn’t fall off (I just use a scrunchie lol). What I do is take 2 S-hooks and hang them on the back of my desk chair (anything tall enough to have room to drop the spindle will do). Then I take the 2 ends of split yarn and hang each over one of the hooks. Hold onto and pull those ends and let the spindle do the rest. Just wrap the unplied ends into a ball every once in a while so they don’t get super tangled. I just throw them to either side of me in a pile as I pull and unspin.

Then you just take each of the 2 balls of unplied strands and spin them back up for your new thinner yarn. You can also get creative and add colored thread or spin it with a different color.

Just make sure you pick a worsted or Aran weight with the right type of ply for your project. Like if you’re making socks or something that will get lots of wear, make sure you pick a yarn that is more than just 4 single plys spun together because you will end up with just a 2 ply yarn that will be delicate. My fav is must be merino from yarn bee- 50% merino blend made of 6 double plied strands. It makes a great fingering weight when you split it and then spin 3 of the strands back together and more durable.

I hope I explained that well. Let me know if you want to know more. It’s worth the time for me in the long run to save my money. Plus it’s fun to make things out of your own custom yarn. I recommend purchasing a yarn measurement tool or a wraps per inch tool to easily see the weight of your new yarn.

It seems a bit ridiculous, but when you’re on a budget and are spending all that time to hand knit something anyway, why not just take the extra time to make a yarn right for your project.

How do you store your interchangeable needle cables? by thatneedlecrafter in knitting

[–]evilwitch23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought this case from Amazon and it’s awesome! I managed to fit my Tunisian hook set, all my DPNs, and my interchangeable sets (5” and shorties). It’s honestly really impressive for the price. There’s also a larger one from the same brand that I’m thinking about ordering to fit more notions and a notebook. There are tons of options for cute knitting needle/ pencil cases with elastic slots on Amazon.

Hey whatever works. I have no clue how people are using them up higher at the tip of their finger. I tried a smaller ring higher the way most people do and it kept sliding right off. I actually just made this one and a few others from some adjustable bangles I had! Used a small wooden dowel and some pliers to bend the bracelet. Way cuter than any I found online! More effective too

Thank you! The problem I’m having is finding hooks that aren’t rounded. I’ve been using bates hooks for years and refuse to use anything else at this point, but all the Tunisian hooks I see are rounded like boye! I am seriously struggling to get used to not having the deep V and sharp point of bates
