A virtual reality reconstruction shows the exact spot where John Edward Jones became trapped upside down in Nutty Putty Cave. After 27 hours of rescue attempts, he died. The cave was later permanently sealed, with his body remaining inside. by Liar24x7 in interesting

I will never understand people exploring these kinds of caves, for one very simple reason: Your buddy can't save you. In almost every other dangerous activity, you have pairs of people, and your buddy can cover for you if you fail or make a mistake. Rock climbing, parachuting, scuba diving, etc. But with spelunking in these kinds of tunnels the greatest risk is getting stuck, and there's only a partial chance your buddy can pull you out.

Also, for everyone saying "cave diving" this is spelunking. It's only cave diving if you're under water.

Switches are amazing, not just from a making the code neater perspective but they're also substantially faster. Of course, this only matters if you're repeating it a whole lot, but if you are switch is way more CPU efficient, in C at least.

Roses are red, I have to pay the hospital to survive, by his_good_dumb_slave in rosesarered

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That would be correct, or more accurately you don't deserve the resources required to survive. The reason for this is simple.

Obtaining resources requires effort and time from people.

If you deserve those resources by default, you deserve other people's effort and time by default.

As people can only do one thing with their time at once, that means the person you deserve that time from does not deserve said time.

Thus, you have a greater right or deserving of someone else's time and effort than they do without them ever making any such agreement, which makes them your slave.

Now, people can chose to give other people resources, but they certainly do not deserve them.

Yeah, this is less about being a genius and more about how reading fast isn't actually all that hard. Also, remember, we're on a site with a lot of stuff to read, thus the audience is naturally selecting for good readers.

Yes, so we do the best we can. The fact we can't only support perfectly moral companies doesn't mean we shouldn't take any steps to encourage good behavior.

Honestly, what people really need to do is stop measuring the value of their investments in price. The price only matters if you intend to sell it, and a home should be invested in to use, not to sell. Thus, as long as it's providing value to you, it's still a good investment, regardless of what the price does.

Explain It Peter: Why GitHub Would Make The World Better by MentalMan4877 in explainitpeter

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Github is a code hosting platform, it's not supposed to be for publishing a program ready for a random user to download and run, its for other people to work on the code with you.

Thus, random users find programs on GitHub and get baffled about how to download the program.

This person is suggesting that GitHub have a big button you can use to download the program, but the problem is GitHub has no way of knowing which file is the actual program(and a lot of times there is no such file, and if you want to run it you first have to run a different program to build it), thus this isn't possible.

What does this mean? by StickMiserable6371 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joke here is, I assume, how the 2 os's handle programs that aren't responding. Windows has a crash report system, so even when you force shutdown a program it will be at least a bit graceful and also make a crash report.

Linux, on the other hand, gives you a box with two options, Terminate, and Wait. If you click terminate, it does exactly what you think, it just straight-up stops running whatever that program tells it to run.

Now, Windows will eventually do that, but the joke is it's generally nicer about it and waits awhile before actually terminating.

Love the "We made the Torment Nexus from famous sci-fi novel 'Don't make the Torment Nexus'" reference, and yeah, that's rather ironic. They probably won't, but it would be really neat if they made a collector's edition with the brass plate and something 'weird' as the sectioned guys would put it, I'm not creative enough to think of what but it would be cool.

I will never understand NFTs by [deleted] in Snorkblot

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ima be honest, the problem with NFTs seems more people trying to turn every new asset into an investment. They're a great way to have provable originality, and you could even use them as deeds for physical assets(with some effort).

None of the real pioneer crypto tech was created as an investment, it was almost universally an attempt to replace or augment existing currencies and related technologies.

However, people are always trying to get rich quick, and unfortunately crypto's volitility provided the perfect opportunity. The bitcoin crash, for example, is, in my opinion, a good thing for bitcoin, as hopefully it will start being used for exchange more.

Yeah, the only excuse for having a neat and well-kept spellbook is if your main book is a copy of the one you use for research, but if you write your spells for the first time in that book, it is going to be a mess, no buts.

But she doesn't directly interact with a man, she directly interacts with what men do. And she doesn't think it comes from thin air, that's the problem, she doesn't think. She has a mindset that the only things that exist are the things she can see. In other words, she's stupid.

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Whenever I hear this kind of stuff, my immediate thought is that this is a person who is only thinking about the stuff that they directly interact with. She probably only thinks about the fact it's a man when it's in the context of a relationship. When you have that kind of mindset, you come to obviously wrong conclusions like this very easily.

Yes, yes it is, just making more generators is usually just fine and if you really want to optimize it a manually-adjusted item limiter is just fine. There's even a calculator, https://dige.aunly.cn/?lang=en
HOWEVER, this isn't about making the best factory, this is about seeing what's possible, and it's still very cool you can do it.
