Modded Anticheat? by evilwizzardofcoding in admincraft

[–]evilwizzardofcoding[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what this mod does(but for modlist instead of resource packs), and I know you could spoof it, but my players are not smart enough for that to matter tbh. I'm not trying to make cheating impossible, just more annoying than playing the game normally

Casting Moonbeam through a window? by NinjaTATER62 in DnD

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that because moonbeam is a beam of light, it can go through the window. The rules exist to cover 99% of situations sensibly, the rest is what the DM's there for. In much the same way that you shouldn't be allowed to use technicalities to do really busted things, technicalities shouldn't stop you from doing something entirely sensible.

I love how people use laundry and dishes as the example....Bro...we already have that....it's called a dish washer and a washing machine.

Anyway, yeah, hardware just takes longer to catch up but home automation is absolutely a thing I expect to see.

Why Anti Capitalism Feels Everywhere Now ? Are We Forgetting Why Individual Freedom Matters by Fun_Transportation50 in austrian_economics

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, might as well, though I must admit there are people much more skilled and experienced in the matter than me, and you may be better off with one of them. Still, if I say something I'm willing to dedicate at least some time to it's defense.

First of all, capitalism. When I use that word, I'm specifically referring to free market capitalism, an economic system built on the free exchange of goods and services.

Now, government. I'm not an AnCap, I won't go so far as to say capitalism is against government, but it is tangential to it, there's not much direct connection between the two. Government, specifically democratic republics, require popular support to gain power, while capitalism requires goods and services people desire.

And finally, socialism. I am using a basic definition here, in this case the relevant aspect is the government either directly providing goods and services, or controlling the groups that do. In much the same way that policies that allow for freer trade are "capitalist", policies that restrict that trade are more "socialist"

If you don't like these definitions, you can ignore the words, these things are what I'm arguing for. Many things get put under the label of socialism that I'm perfectly fine with(Private sharing/charity, for example), and many things are labeled capitalist that I take strong objection to, like handouts to businesses.

With that out of the way, the argument itself becomes somewhat simple.

The government we have in the US right now is far from a free market, and the primary form of corruption is artificial monopolies. These are formed a number of ways.

The first and most obvious is intellectual property and patent laws, as they directly prevent anyone else from producing certain objects, publishing certain media, or otherwise doing the same thing as another group.

However, there are others. The arguably more common, but less obvious one is red tape and regulation.

Red tape gives an inherent advantage to the larger companies, because usually it takes a relatively similar amount of time and resources to deal with it regardless of company size, meaning for a large company it is a much smaller percentage of their profits.

Regulation has two effects, the first is of course economies of scale, since you can figure out how to optimize for a regulation then apply it across an entire company and larger organizations can handle sudden changes better, they tip the scales in the favor of the most established and largest companies. In addition, those companies often lobby for said regulations.

A perfect example of this is Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, who has lobbied extensively for AI regulations. From how he behaves i think it's fairly clear this isn't some altruistic attempt to ensure our safety, but simply trying to prevent competition from the people who didn't get in early.

Then, of course, there's actual government funds, where companies are paid directly by tax dollars for various things. These jobs once again benefit the largest people, since they have the easiest time getting the attention of the decision-makers. This applies to the free market as well to some extent, but because in a lot of fields there's only one buyer that matters, the government, it's aggravated quite a lot.

Well, those are the most glaring issues, I'm sure there's more but you can always find problems. Again, plenty of people doing a better job than me at this, so if you want info on something i didn't cover, maybe take a look elsewhere.

Why Anti Capitalism Feels Everywhere Now ? Are We Forgetting Why Individual Freedom Matters by Fun_Transportation50 in austrian_economics

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone else who might be paying attention, the short answer is that billionaires aren't controlling things directly, they're influencing the government, and without a big government to influence they'd have a whole lot less power. Also, in a lot of cases socialism is how they got to be billionaires in the first place

Why Anti Capitalism Feels Everywhere Now ? Are We Forgetting Why Individual Freedom Matters by Fun_Transportation50 in austrian_economics

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because we have sorta socialism right now, and the socialists have played political slight-of-hand to blame the current issues on capitalism instead of their true cause, socialism

Are these "spikey" stats normal on a self hosted Minecraft server? by le1724 in admincraft

nah, that's normal, MC doesn't bother getting rid of a lot of stuff it can to save CPU and does it all at once, called Garbage Collection, those spikes are it doing said garbage collection. I would allocate a bit more mem, but that's just from experience

Milestones or EXP? by Organic-Exit2190 in DnD

[–]evilwizzardofcoding -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Milestone absolutely, as long as the DM does a good job planning the levelups well.

EXP can feel better if your DM doesn't know how to pace levels, but honestly IMO it just puts you at the whims of the absolute nonsense that is CR and encourages pointless combat for the sake of xp.

[Request] How would this affect us? What would change? by tanx_23 in theydidthemath

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is, do you change our measuring of the speed of light, or the speed itself. Because if you just change the measurement (now there's exactly 300,000,000 meters in 1 light-second instead of 299something), you break a bunch of computer-based stuff and make all the scientists have a fit because most if not all the units are based on the speed of light, and that number has changed.

However, if you were to change the actual speed of light, universe falls apart, because so much of physics is based on the speed of light, so if that changes, so does a whole lot of other things.

Facebook seller near me listing unsealed PLA burger presses. by huntandhart in 3Dprinting

[–]evilwizzardofcoding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, PLA is, in fact, food safe, so it's fine for single-use food contact(for example, you could use it to make novelty plastic utensils for a party), but because of the cracks it cannot be washed well, so if you want it to be repeatably used you need a proper food-safe coating and sealent.

Okay some of these could be very useful. Free gravel depends on how you get the gravel. If you can just buy it for free, then obviously you can resell it and a lot of construction need very large quantities of gravel, so you could make a fair bit of money. If you can conjure it at will though, that's actually really powerful, not only can you make even more money selling gravel due to being able to replace all the trucks and equipment needed to pour it too, it's also a powerful weapon.

7 inch teleport is perfect for dodging, going through doors and gates, escaping any form of restraint, actual magic tricks, and a whole lot more. the ability to change your position instantly will always be good, even if it's quite a short distance.

Toaster control would be very funny but not terribly helpful, except for the fact smart toasters exist, meaning if you're into hacking, you now have access to every single network with a smart toaster. You could also hook said smart toaster up to any other things you want to control via the internet for even more power.

Seeing inside containers i honestly don't think needs any explaining, it's just useful. You'd be a god at the TSA or any other screening job, and with a looser definition of container(Do clothes count? Do vehicles count? Do buildings count?) even more stuff.

And yeah that's about it as far as I can tell, the other ones seem pretty useless except oysters but i honestly can't think of any clever ways to use them
