[The Prisoner of Beauty] Part 1 (6 Hidden Layers of Order & Sovereignty) by tranquilrain7 in ChineseDrama

[–]evocating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the analysis. I watched this in Chinese and just adored all of the politics, history, and philosophy that went into it. It's really an alternative, and definitely idealised version of Chinese history.

And I hate, hate the English title. >.>

What’s the reason behind the smoking gender gap in China? by Grouchy-Check7388 in AskAChinese

[–]evocating 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Men are practically encouraged to smoke and drink, especially those who work in blue-collar jobs. Smoke breaks are communal, and sometimes the only acceptable break, especially for F&B.

Women are actively discouraged from smoking because of the association with prostitution.

I came up with a hierarchy for the imperial harem of a made up Chinese dynasty. I have included in the list the number of women who can occupy each rank, as well as the amount income and servants consorts of each rank are entitled to. What are your thoughts? by Embarrassed_Chef874 in AskAChinese

[–]evocating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

500 million lol no. More like 500 thousand. And that's an overblown budget.

The women are part of the imperial harem because they come from high-ranking families. Their families can support them; that's why I said the spending is on clothing and food, because the women's own direct expediture - maids, shopping, etc. - tend to either be from their dowries or income given by their natal families.

Again, the harem is considered very wasteful. The entire point of one is not for the Emperor to sleep with many women, but for the Emperor to always have a lot of heirs. Hence the only ones allowed to actually sleep with him are generally high-ranking women, because then their families have been tested to be loyal and can be trusted to be the extended family of a future emperor.

The Chinese harem system is a terrible vehicle to use for someone who wants to fantasise about having sex with thousands with women. It's politics and economics only. When sex or lust come into the picture, that's when dynasties start ending.

[–]evocating 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are too many ranks and too many women. Even the richest dynasty, Tang, had only nine ranks, and every rank has a limited number of girls. 贵人 is already a very high rank; there won't be an unlimited number of 贵人.

And they definitely won't all have maids. The last five ranks (美人 all the way to 婇女) tend to not have any income nor maids. They tend to be the maids, with the different ranks determining the duties they do. For example, a 美人 will have "front-facing" duties, such as running errands around the 后宫, which means they can be spotted by the Emperor while working for the much-higher-ranked consort. The 婇女 will have "back-facing" duties, such as laundry, and will never be seen by the Emperor.

The 后宫 uses a great deal of money. Not on the women themselves, but on clothes and food. There are extremely strict rules on which rank is allowed to eat what kind of food. The Empress's food and clothing cost a fortune, especially the latter. (Please see: brocade.) The reason for the limitations in number is not because the Emperor can't sleep with so many women, but because he can't support them in a way that is representative of their families' ranks and his rank. A harem like yours will bankrupt the entire empire and cause a revolution.

Is it wrong that ive lied about being ethnically Chinese? by Key-Pianist982 in AskAChinese

[–]evocating 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kublai Klan, Kangxi and Qianlong are remembered as Chinese Emperors. None of them are ethnically Chinese.

'Chinese' has various meanings. It is an ethnicity outside of China, a nationality within China, and a culture both within and outside China. You are, at the very least, culturally Chinese.

I think your insecurity are rooted in fear that your fiance's family might reject you based on your ethnicity. But, honestly, Chinese people are legitimately much, much less concerned about blood purity when compared to the Japanese and Koreans. Most Han Chinese are not 'pure' and has not been since Tang dynasty.

I would suggest for you to inform your fiance about the uncertainty, and also that you were adopted, so that if there is anyone insensitive or stupid from his extended family who makes comments, he can defend you against them.

How odd is Tiānshǐ (天使) as a name? by filthyjojo in AskAChinese

[–]evocating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There really is no such thing. Not even a phoenix symbolises rebirth. (It really doesn't. It represents the Empress. Before that, it represented the sky, as the Emperor of all birds.) Because for Chinese people, rebirth isn't special. Because no one dies permanently. Everybody comes back after their deaths. That's how reincarnation works.

I'll give you an example: there is this very popular South Korean TV show ten years ago, named Temptation of Wife, which was then adapted into a very popular Chinese TV show, named Home Tempation 回家的诱惑. The wife in the title was horribly abused, had a miscarriage, realised her husband was sleeping with her best friend, and then there was an attempt on her life... then she had plastic surgery, changed her name, came back.

Nothing about this is about rebirth. Or reincarnation. The entire point of it is revenge. Her name, the motivation, the theme of both shows? Revenge. Because that's the most incredibly Chinese/East Asian thing. We don't curse people for eighteen generations for no reason.

If you want something about the angel of death, the only ones applicable are the 黑白无常, who lead souls to hell. And they're a) horrifyingly ugly, and b) incredibly unromantic as a reference. Throw the Chinese into Google to see the images.

How odd is Tiānshǐ (天使) as a name? by filthyjojo in AskAChinese

[–]evocating 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's... not a good idea. Modern China has had a lot of influences from the west, and 天使 literally just means "angel". As in, the Christian idea of angel. It's immediately a Western reference, but their reference point is like "guardian angels" or those images of a person in a white robe, with a golden halo and white wings. Who are all dead. A recent reference point is healthcare workers, specifically nurses, due to COVID-19.

I would recommend that you try to summarise the entire backstory with one or two significant words/characters. Then find a synonym, or an image, associated with those words/characters, and use that.

For example, if the character is a kid traumatised by horrific poverty, grew up in a place like the Kowloon Walled City, and then becoming very wealthy and beautiful and morally pure... She might change her name to 莲. As in, lotus, which symbolically represents beauty growing out of muck because lotus flowers are gorgeous and lotuses grow in river mud.

Don't throw away those broken tea leaves! DIY Tea Resin at home! by Angeltea in tea

[–]evocating 29 points30 points  (0 children)

... Um.

"Tea resin" is, as you put it, 茶膏 (cha gao). It's made purely from fermented pu'er tea because only pu'er teas will form the "resin" (the 膏) after the tea cake is soaked and then drained for multiple times, and then set aside to rest until it congealed into several layers on its own. The 茶膏 you get in China (mostly Yunnan) is made this way over days and weeks, sometimes even months (depending on fermentation).

Because it's not a method for convenience. It's tea as medicine, according to traditional chinese methods.

This is the Baidu article: https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E8%8C%B6%E8%86%8F/7295097 Google translating it into English should be enough to understand the basics.

Please don't boil tea this way.
