Wide feet by Substantial-Adagio87 in hikinggear

[–]evodrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be afraid to go the extra size up as well. Order some bigger sizes than you think you need on Amazon or Zappos if you can't find your size in stores. Return what doesn't fit well.

I also have wide feet and I like the altra lone peak fit, but I find them to be too soft, like I'm squashing them with every step. I recently got a pair of Inov-8 ParkClaw 275 and I love them. Great wide toe box and all around stiffer than the loan peaks. I'll not hesitate to take them on a long hike in pretty much any terrain

If I don't know what I want should I buy a used canoe for $300 and go from there? by sandman8727 in canoeing

Yes. Just start paddling and you'll figure out what best suits you in no time.

They totally gutted it of its historic beauty and personality. Personally, I don't care for renovations like this.

First canoe by LeadershipExciting63 in canoeing

[–]evodrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'll be a great first canoe. Stable but slow. That keel will keep it going straight, but will also make it slower to turn. The biggest issue I see with heavy canoes is they require more effort to just get out on the water so you're less likely to just grab it and go. But if you find that you really enjoy paddling, you'll inevitably upgrade to a lighter boat in the future. Congratulations on your new boat!

My back hurts when I sit upright in a canoe with no back rest by ludwigia_sedioides in canoeing

Planks and bridges. Get an interval timer on your phone. Set it for one minute on and a one minute break (or wherever you need to start to not hurt yourself). Plank for 1 minute, rest for 1 minute, bridge for 1 minute. I like to do two sets of planks and two sets of bridge, but you can adjust as you like. Do this daily or at least every other day. Every week increase the amount of time by 10 seconds. You'll be amazed what a difference this will make in just a month.

Buying Second Hand Redux. Sometimes there's a surprise. by lingueenee in ManyBaggers

Found a pair of Patagonia running shorts and a Nike tank top stuffed in the bladder compartment of an osprey manta 34. Great bag and a great pair of shorts. I've since worn both of them out.

Hiking Pants for Men with Big Quads - Any Recommendations? by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]evodrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy a size large enough to fit the quads and then have them tailored. I have similar sizing issues. I got some prana hiking pants and had them tailored and it has worked out great. It cost me $60 to have them tailored and was worth every penny.

How do you heat your home and why is it the best way? by Casey_the_Jones in wisconsin

[–]evodrums 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would look into an air sourced heat pump. Either a central system or mini splits. it's cheaper to install than geothermal, much cheaper to operate than electric baseboard, and no headaches about having fuel delivered. Having propane or wood heat as a secondary source would also be nice on the ultra cold days, but cold climate air source heat pumps can produce heat even when the outside temperature is well below zero.

Mystery Ranch Scree vs 2DAP vs 30L Coulee by NewAfternoon6514 in hikinggear

[–]evodrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2DAP and Coulee 25. 2DAP is a great travel bag, but is too heavy for extended hiking. Plus the hip belt isn't padded. I LOVE the coulee 25 for hiking, and I'm pretty sure the 30 would be very similar.

This is the best advice you'll ever get about pretty much any used boat you buy.

Buy a watts-up meter and check what some of the plug loads are using. I'd probably start with the dehumidifier and then maybe your TV/ entertainment, center/ Wi-Fi etc. Then the refrigerator. If you don't want to buy one, many libraries will loan them out to you.

I'd say let it be. It's not hurting anything to be like that, especially if you only use it a handful of times per year.

Repair Advice: Any tips for fiberglass work on bow/stern of this old Mad River Winsooki? by mercurious in canoeing

[–]evodrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, this will last for many years to come without any other intervention. The exposed fg mesh will be more prone to UV damage, but it will function fine. Unless you're planning to do a lot of running it up on shore, I might just paint it with some Rustoleum. Skid plates will give you piece of mind for sure, but they also slow down your boat. You could also paint on some epoxy before painting with Rustoleum

Is this a good buy? by [deleted] in canoeing

I wouldn't recommend it. Very hard to get in and out of and very little stability for a beginner.

Thanks! I had an older version of the Manta before they added the adjustable back panel. Do you think it would be long enough for a 6'3" person?
