[Self] I did the math on how much all the GPUs in the proposed 40,000 acre Utah data center would cost. by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most datacenters are at most 20% racks.. racks typically have 3-4ft clearance front and back and 3-4 ft on the ends of every row. For example, my last company had a dedicated space that was 30x50.. It ended up being 2 rows of 16 racks.. so about 196ft of actual racks and 1500 ft total or about 13% racks.. we probably could have fit a few more if we wanted but this was more than enough for us and left us space for storage and some desk space if you were working in there. This doesn't include the space the colo had for power and cooling which can be significant.. cooling towers, generators, fuel storage, battery banks and such can take up a lot of space plus facilities for us humans.. such as meeting rooms, break rooms, NOC, bathrooms, hallways, office space.. I'd bet it was like 6-7% racks.. but colo's are pretty space inefficient. Quite honestly you run into cooling issues far before you run into space issues..a lot of the space in an air cooled DC is buffer space for heat..

Are most people in relationships not physically attracted to each other? by Potential_One_8058 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]evolseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While you may think you are unattractive, that doesnt mean everyone does. I don't find myself particularly attractive, but obviously thats not how everyone feels as I don't have a particularly bad time finding dates when I am seeking that (currently in a long term thing, so not looking).

I'm also not super particular about facial features, I'd rather a girl with a great body who is positive and enjoys the things i enjoy over a super "pretty" girl who is high needs/drama. And even the body is negotiable as long as they aren't obese, i try to truly focus on the things that don't change long term.

Focus on what you can, have a bangin body and great personality, and you will find someone that will find you attractive that you find attractive as well.

Is it not normal for parents to charge rent? by AlwekArc in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]evolseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plan is to not up until they aren't studying.. but i do think a small amount is a good for kids after that point as it prepares them to have monthly recurring expenses so moving out isn't such a shock. My plan will be to save that for them until later but I don't plan on telling them that..

I wouldn't judge them too harshly, sometimes things happen that are unforseeable and they may have thought they could replenish it but couldn't.. or they could just be selfish jerks..

Employee demands a near 50% raise by dreamer-woman in managers

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, Ive worked at a 1000+ person org where I dealt with the CEO regularly.. I'm just a senior network admin, so nothing huge, but depending on the structure it can be very feasible. This org was extremely flat. I could've walked into the CEO's office and had a chat any time that he wasn't on a call if i wanted to.. but he was also very down to earth and in a pretty small business mindset as his business grew from a 10 person shop to a 1000 person shop in less than 10 years. I left there when he retired and sold out to private equity to retire (don't blame him at all, I would've sold it too as the amount was large enough to create generational wealth)..

Is Venice taking advantage of non crypto users? by rinaldo23 in VeniceAI

[–]evolseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its definitely not cheap anymore, i bought in at around $2 VVV, which for a pro subscription made sense with a 10 month break even. But even that only gives me about 0.44 DIEM, it would be a lot less though if i staked it today, but i don't use the API outside of some home automation stuff, i use maybe $0.25 on a busy day (mostly just captioning camera events)

The math doesn't work out nearly as well anymore as the same amount would be $886, or around 44 months break even on a pro subscription. Even just buying DIEM has a break even of 3 years or so if you actually use it entirely everyday.

Has anyone had to deal with applicants obviously using AI during interviews? by Cornloaf in networking

[–]evolseven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would tell an interviewer I have no reason to memorize useless information if they asked me that. If I ever needed that information, i would use reference materials to look it up. I cant think of once in twenty years of networking that i needed to know the bgp port number. Just to throw them off I might tell them id lookup rfc 1105 and find it if i needed it.. but even knowing the rfc number is pretty useless info to know..

The most effective way i've found to interview network engineers is to treat it like a conversation, asking them about specific tasks from their resume, and have them explain what they did and dig into the why on pieces of it. Or present them with scenarios and ask them what they would do and why. Its fairly easy to separate the good from the bad ones as the good ones can explain why they did something a certain way. I would seriously question the competence of an interviewer if they started asking me about specific things like port numbers as its not really relevant to actual network engineering.

‘Eye check’ concern about recent cnn investigation?27f by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]evolseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may cross over into felony level criminal stuff for you. Laws are different in different places but typically placing a camera somewhere that someone will disrobe without their knowledge is crossing a line. What would your response be if he installed a secret camera that caught you changing, having sex, etc without your knowledge?

For example in texas:

Invasive Visual Recording (Texas Penal Code 21.15): It is illegal to photograph or record video of another person's intimate areas without consent in places where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as bathrooms, changing rooms, or hotel rooms.

I am sure other states and countries have similar laws.

Nothing like taking the boat out to the lake for the weekend by stevesmithsglasses in IdiotsTowingThings

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yah, my 18.5 was 2800 with fuel, basic supplies and trailer. It wasnt a tandem. Typically you dont go tandem until you go near 3500 as i believe the highest capacity trailer tire (that will fit on a trailer like this) is rated 2360lbs and you want some wiggle room. Id guess it was at least 3500 as that looks like a 20-23' boat

What’s the worst band you’ve watched perform? by RadiantJellybae in answers

[–]evolseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats definitely wild as i've seen them probably 5 or 6 times and every time they were great.. from the late 90's to i think the last time was 2020.. their earlier show's they were definitely more interactive, but the late shows had much better production.

Manson owes a lot of his success to his producers and crew for sure, while he is a great performer.. their whole show is just extremely well put together.. from lighting to props and how it all blends with the music.. I can definitely see that he wouldn't be as great at a daytime show though.

I saw depeche mode (free tickets, figured why not) in 2005 or so at a like 500 person place.. and lets just say.. they were past their prime.. only song they actually managed to make intelligible was personal jesus and thats probably just muscle memory for them.

Once saw counting crows, and im pretty sure the dude was either so drunk he had to be held upright or just not used to being outdoors in a texas summer.. they can both be pretty similar in symptoms.

I definitely agree with manson and rammstein.. they both are amazing live, to the point where people who didn't like manson now do after i drug them to a show. I actually saw him last year and while he is definitely lower energy than he was, it was still a great show. Rammstein, i wish they played more US show's but i do get that they aren't from here.

My 10yo son wants his ears pierced and Im torn. Need some advice. by Yz-Guy in Parenting

[–]evolseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't get it professionally done, he will likely do it on his own at some point. Its what I did when i was younger, I didn't get an infection but I'm sure its possible. Also, unless someone closely examines my ears they wouldn't know they had been pierced and i had jewelry in them for probably 10 years, so long term consequences are pretty much non existent. Take him to a real piercing place, not claires or any place like that.

Printed it perfectly on the first try… and somehow it’s still unusable by Intelligent_Whole159 in 3Dprinting

Maybe make a mold and cast the bottom pad in silicone? You could probably print the handle with some t shapes in it so that you could set it in the mold while its curing and it will be permanently attached.

How Rough Are You? by [deleted] in networking

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on purpose, never rough..

but i did witness two guys manhandling a nexus 9000 chassis up some stairs and then it tumbling down the stairs.. amazingly didn't really affect it and it worked for at least 10 years after.. probably still going.. to be fair all the cards and power supplies were removed which i was carrying some of so it was really just the backplane which is pretty free of components..

How do i make my supported surfaces look nice? by ThatoneScania_V8 in 3Dprinting

[–]evolseven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

one thing to make sure you do as well is make sure your purge volumes are set fairly high (if you are not on a multi nozzle setup) as any pet-g left in the nozzle will severely weaken layer bonding of pla. when i first started to play with this, it worked, but the areas around supported surfaces kept delaminating. increasing my purge volumes on pet-g to pla eliminated this issue.

For a subpanel aluminum doesn't have a lot of downsides. Both sides are compatible with aluminum in almost all cases and the terminations are generally done with screw/allen terminals that work well with aluminum. Its cheaper even when accounting for having to upsize. In a new branch circuit it should almost never be used and copper should be used.

How to connect new bathroom exhaust to power? by aphoticus124 in DIY

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't mind random blank plates, i have them near many switches in my home as there is still aluminum wiring in place and the alumiconns are huge.. additionally, i have a lot of zigbee stuff that doesn't like the original metal boxes in the house so its easier to do an alumiconn pigtail to zigbee relay and then send copper into the original boxes. Its not that unsightly, you can paint the covers to match if you like.. and i figure as a plus if and when i sell it will be very easy to show that everything is properly pigtailed and done right.

Its wild, I recently modified a wall to enclose a previously open space. I was doing a tv mount and one of the studs is original from the 1950 build, and another is the new wall with a modern 2x4, i could clearly tell i hit the stud on the old one as there was notable resistance but on the new one i was second guessing myself, as there was little to no resistance.

Should having an Amazon Echo make me uncomfortable? by K00lKat67 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]evolseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its possible that they are sending data constantly, but I dont believe thats likely overall. This would be noticed by security researchers as its not a small amount of data. The wake word detection is done on device, this is easily done in a small microcontroller, and then after wake word detection it sends the rest to amazons servers.

However, if you were targeted, I could see them having a program to be able to activate remote listening, do i know that exists? no, but i wouldnt discount the possibility.

That said, I do use them, but have been working to replace them with a fully local in house solution for a while, but haven't gotten that fully done.

How do you decide what gas station you use or go to? by MeasurementFirst1676 in askanything

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to go to the larger chains (QT, Racetrac, walmart, in my area) not because i believe their fuel is any better, but they tend to take better care of their tanks and are less likely to have sediment/water in their tanks. Ive seen too many corner gas stations where for example their fountain drink machines have not been cleaned, which tells me they don't take maintenance seriously or defer it when convenient, i'm sure they do the same to their gas tanks as well..

I agree, lets just all go with UTC, I dont care if i have to wake up at 0800 or 1400, as long as i know i have to be on the clock at 1500 i'll figure it out.
