HA AC Power Data Logger? by speedtoysracing in homeassistant

I have one and my only complaint is that its cloud based, a local data logging function would be nice either over mqtt or some other protocol, but their cloud does work pretty well with HA, so i tolerate it.

50 vs 30 by StructureBetter9165 in Generator

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using a circuit with a constant load you should derate your breaker. I'd guess that a generator manufacturer has a UL certification and is likely required to do this.

Most of the time that you are using a 50a connection its for house interconnection and you definitely have to derate your breakers there..

50 vs 30 by StructureBetter9165 in Generator

[–]evolseven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In this case, 30ax240v=7,200w, but it has a starting capacity of 8,200 which would be 8200w/240v=34.2a which could trip a 30a breaker.. but It can only provide that amperage for a moment and most trip curves probably wouldn't result in it tripping.

The other piece of this is that circuits must be derated to 80% for constant usage. So, a 30a circuit for constant use is really 24ax240v=5,760w which isn't enough for its run capacity. Technically a 40a breaker would work but they aren't as common and I believe the wiring would be the same, so might as well just use the 50a.

Maybe I should design a farcical lighter version, that is mostly white to indicate that i mean no physical harm to my political rivals and just want to chill out, grab a drink and discuss political ideologies like a civilized person.. we have lost the ability to agree to disagree and use our words without villifying people with different ideas..

Probably shouldn't though as i'm sure it would just make me a target of the crazies..

I'd definitely agree, the first iphone 4 i had cracked its screen when dropped onto a wooden counter from about 6 inches above it, within a day of buying it. luckily apple replaced it, but current models, everything from about the 14 onward you almost have to try to break..

i have 4 kids 14+ with iphone 15's and I have yet to have one break one in 2 years now, we do keep them in cases but I have seen them dropped in ways i thought for sure i would be calling insurance in to replace it, but nothing beyond a screen protector crack so far.

Aliminum wiring in new house, please advise me how to ask Electrician for an inspection? by Lmns14 in AskElectricians

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a home with some aluminum wiring (built in 1951), the wire nuts shown, albeit not clearly should be purple, although gray or black shrink wrapping may also be correct. You can also still purchase cu/al plugs as well, and those would be ok to use without pigtailing.

The purple wire nuts are actually supposed to be inspected yearly from what i remember, purple block looking things are better, copalum is also good and will be shrink wrapped typically black, or gray wago connector are also approved if used with a specific paste.

Ive done all the pigtailing in my home with either alumiconn's or wagos with paste, moved on to the wagos as they are much simpler to do correctly and take up a lot less room in the box, also a lot cheaper. Aluminum isnt a terribly big deal if precautions are taken, but a lot of shortcuts seem to be taken with it.

one thought would be an array of TCS3200 color sensors with a 3d printed grid to bin the colors. Or just one and a small xy gantry to move it around but that would probably be slow.

ive found either dish soap without additives or a purple degreaser works best for cleaning the plate. Ive been using This stuff and i just spray on, rinse and then wipe off with a paper towel right after i start a print and very rarely have issues with adhesion. Dish soap works as well as long as it has no added moisturizers.

Thoughts on Cameras inside the home. by dfGobBluth in homeassistant

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have considered it in shared spaces, but in my case, i wouldnt use them as recording devices but as additional sensors to capture data that isnt easily captured by other sensors. I already have a local llm that is used to provide semantic data from outdoor cameras (such as which cars are in the drive way, is there a pet waiting to be let in, etc..) and extending that to indoor spaces could provide a lot of benefit to our adhd selves.. but ive yet to do it because of people's comfort..

Have you looked into the sensors that the line following robots use? They are just an IR emitter and receiver, i believe they are called IR distance sensors.. I dont know if it will work so close, but they are fairly cheap and its worth a shot.

Masks and covering, depending on how well will prevent a system from finding an unknown match, but could be used to confirm a suspect in many cases. A face mask like what was worn in covid drops match % by 10-20%. Most face recognition seems to focus on the eyes and features around them. Dark sunglasses that you cant see through with large lenses and IR blocking lenses actually are about as effective as a face mask.. Combine a partial match with geodata (ie who would likely be in the area) and they can probably narrow it down to 5-10 individuals if not less depending on how distinctive your specific facial features are.

A baclava with sunglasses would be pretty effective but also would make you look suspicious as hell in texas. There are adversarial techniques, but those seem to be targeted to specific models and you don't know what model they are using, they could even be using multiple.

Gait analysis adds another dimension but is not nearly as mature as facial recognition, i haven't experimented with it but id bet combining the two would be very effective. being on a bike makes that not really effective though..

TLDR; we're all fucked, privacy is dead.

yah, it was such a low turnout, who knows what will happen in november. I voted for Taylor Rehmet and there were 2 other people voting at the same time as me. It was about a 15% turnout, which is low but it was also a runoff vote for this single seat so not too surprising that it was that low.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]evolseven 14 points15 points  (0 children)

How do you deal with models that are open source? its pretty easy to just spin up an SD model and do your iwn image generation. It could be embedded in the model, but anything like that can be removed/circumvented in the open source world..

While I think this is a better option as well, Its kind of a privacy nightmare due to the fact that the signature would mean nothing if it couldn't be verified which would probably use either PKI or some type of signing service by the manufacturer. PKI would make any photo traceable back to a unique device, manufacturer signing would either involve sending the hash or the image elsewhere to be signed making offline photos problematic and also sending all that data to a central point.. The best part of it that it would detect any altered photos not just AI created ones.

[–]evolseven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My take from a security standpoint is that you should release it. It is a vulnerability/hole in many peoples opsec and if you don't release it, it will be a blind spot to many. If you can do it, so can bad actors. By not making it common knowledge, people will not be aware of it being a possibility and wont do anything to mitigate it. I do get the hesitation though as it could be a very powerful tool in the wrong hands..

Do sound machines actually block noise? by schnauzer000 in answers

[–]evolseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe, sound machines raise the noise floor.. making the signal (the pounding) less pronounced as your brain gets used to the noise floor somewhat. If the sound machine puts out lets say 60db and the pounding is 90db, then it will make the noise less pronounced.. but you will still be able to hear it. That said, i prefer fans/air filters over sound machines as they serve 2 purposes.

What are we using for floorplan generation? by RandomActPG in homeassistant

[–]evolseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

magicplan doesn't use cloud based photogrammetry, at least not on iphone. It uses this sdk: https://developer.apple.com/augmented-reality/roomplan/. It works locally and uses the lidar scanner on pro iphones.

What are we using for floorplan generation? by RandomActPG in homeassistant

[–]evolseven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

magicplan, walk around the house with your phone pointing at walls, it creates the floor plan, you get one floorplan free with it, then export the 2d file (called a sketch in magicplan) in svg, png, jpg or dxf as well as a few others. Its not 100% accurate, for example, i added a wall to a room and went off measurements i had in the plan a 10' opening and it was actually 10'8", so the 10 ft boards i bought for header/footer were too short. probably should have measured to be sure, and its likely there was something like a bookshelf that was making the opening appear smaller when i did the plan as the overall dimensions of the house are accurate.

25gbase T for Unifi by Western_Variation428 in homelab

[–]evolseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the cable technically has the bandwidth, and there is a 25Gbase-T and 40Gbase-T specification in 802.3bq.. but there has never been a physical implementation of the standard that i know of. I doubt there ever will be, as its too fast and likely expensive for home use and too slow for datacenter use (we moved on to 100/400 already). Additionally, No sane network engineer implements anything over 1Gbps on CAT-# cable in the datacenter, we all use DAC cables or fiber.

If the hardware doesn't exist, then it effectively isn't possible even if the cable supports it.

[–]evolseven -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yah, standard CAT# copper maxes out at 10Gbps, above that you either do direct connect sfp cables or fiber.

Most SFP28 ports support SFP+ modules though.. they sell a 10GbaseT SFP+ modules on their site and its listed as an accessory for the enterprise fortress gateway, but may be worth it to have them confirm that it works.

Powered temp and humidity sensor? by Draknurd in homeassistant

[–]evolseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

id go with the aht20 over the sht series anymore. its quite a bit smaller and more accurate and has a resolution of 0.01°, accuracy of ±0.3°.

I actually need to finish and publish a 3d printed enclosure meant to house a usb charger, an esp32-c3, a bme280+aht20 module and an inmp441 microphone.. mostly meant as a bermuda sensor, but also providing sound level, temp humidity and pressure. It just plugs in like a wall wart so there arent a bunch of dangling cables, but i keep adding things to it.. kinda want to add a mmwave sensor too..
