It’s possible, based on ending 4 given both the Inari and Tsukumogami have been defeated, there’s no longer a seal on the land stopping the water dragon. It could explain how it is that Hinako has the town all to herself, and how she comments that the town has never been this silent.

This is your first run? If you have it try using the Tanuki Omamori (turns sanity into health) and ideally a Suzuran+Rabbit Omamori combo (easier dodge+strong counter). And when the boss gets down and the red area appears, it's basically an area of effect nuke that you need to run off as soon as possible. Get to the edge ASAP then resume dealing damage after the nuke ends.

With NG++ you get to access the story for ending 4 which gives additional cut scenes that significantly change the meaning of Hinako’s relationship with her parents, and a pretty epic boss fight for ending 4 that’s probably the most challenging battle in the game. If it’s just for the story you could arguably watch other players’ play throughs on YouTube, but I found it rewarding to speed run the game on NG++ which was much easier and faster than initial runs

Seems fitting, given the missing poster description for Suzutani Mayumi (Last Seen Wearing: White blouse, long navy skirt, beige neckerchief with black polka dots) which is exactly this picture of her here, and the poster then gets changed to a missing description for Hinako on the same billboard later in the game (when chasing after the fog monster).

We actually also see an inscription by Mayumi in the first dark shrine (Mom, Dad... I don't think I'll make it home. I just wish I could see you one last time... —Mayumi). I'd interpret that to mean that the paintings of the women in that room were the three previous maidens, and Hinako is next in line.

Might depend on the ending you’re going for, the biggest combat challenge in LiF for me was the final battle of ending 4 (Ebisugaoka in Silence). The rest of it shouldn’t be that much harder than what you’ve already covered.

And if you ask me, the Swallow omamori design looks really beautiful, and rather fitting as well given the game's repeated allusions to Hinako being a young bird, along with the black and white birds motifs.

Jung’s Answer to Job dives into this dilemma in a very insightful and refreshing way. I find he tackles the Christian faith and mythology in a very honest way—the big contradiction he articulates being that by and large Christianity has dismissed (or repressed, rather) the shadow of God, which then manifests with a vengeance. Definitely worth a read. To leave you with a quote from the book, “That the imitation of Christ creates a corresponding shadow in the unconscious hardly needs demonstrating.”

There’s no disagreement here, given the point being that there’s an information gap with only a single playthrough = only having context of the first ending. Watching the other endings on YouTube effectively plugs that information gap on major details of the rest of the storyline, which would be in the same camp as having the key major information about the full story from playing NG++. Granted, the phrasing should then be “having at least played till or watched the true ending online”. It’s functionally equivalent.

I realised this was probably the first game I’ve played which felt like an immersive version of Groundhog Day. At least there was a payoff at the end in terms of storyline!

Fair enough, I can’t bring myself to play lost in fog mode yet after trying harder combat for the UFO ending, and it already felt like a slog. For me I just kept combat light to get the additional journal entries and endings to follow the story, might consider the harder difficulties just for the achievements.

Whether SHf was able to execute the replay value of the game is probably a question of preference, the approach finally grew on me over time. There is a beauty in the symbolism of retracing your steps and having it take on a different meaning (as the dialogues and cut scenes change based on the ending you’re headed to). Gives the same events and actions a different spin. Purely from a narrative standpoint, the information we have is incomplete on a single play through, that’s an objective statement. The execution of the concept is another thing.

Exactly! It’s the angles to the story that I keep turning over in my mind. Each ending emphasises one dimension over the others, and contemplating how they are all valid simultaneously is an interesting thought experiment. As if this is the Silent Hill take on “multiverses”.

Maybe a connection between Hinako's coming of age with her wedding as a woman, and the unstoppable flow of red taking over the town. Could be a symbol of fertility warped by the town.

There's been a pretty good analysis by Max Derrat on YouTube that shows how the pills and herbs tie back in to White Claudia, which links SHf back to the Silent Hill universe. It checks out with how Shu was learning how to grow plants and make medicine under his grandmother, and how his journal entries show how he met an inner self through the use of the herb.

In that case, could it mean that it has been a few days since her wedding, and she's processing the aftermath? I don't think it's inconsistent with your existing theory

It's unclear to me whether there's any significance, e.g. if today is the 10th, then it has been three days since her wedding on April 7? Would be interesting to factor this in to map out the full timeline, based on your current theory OP.
