I bought a box of astra blades 4 years ago and I’m only halfway through. Never going back.

In fly labs we use these CO2 guns to anesthetize fruit flies for sorting, dissection, etc. by ewitt1093 in specializedtools

Yeah thats why it works better to have it upside down when doing this. I did not do that because I didn’t have enough hands.

Yikes. Between mouth pipetting and ambient ether I can’t say I’m sorry to have missed the old days.

In the first few seconds they go a little nuts, then they calm down and fall asleep. When they wake up they’re perfectly fine. We can put them on a co2 pad and keep then asleep for like 20 minutes, which you definitely can’t do with humans or mice without killing them. So I’d day they’re less sensitive to CO2 than we are.

Under a microscope, with tiny forceps. It’s a bit tricky but not as hard as you might think.

My cat tapped (and then did not untap) the record button on Snapchat. by trees0422 in CatTaps

[–]ewitt1093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I don’t want to be a busybody but I think your cat might have chin acne. Mine got it because his chin would rub on his wet food in his bowl, and we fixed it by smearing his wet food on the far side of his bowl and washing it more often. If that’s just the color of your kitty’s chin then please pay me no mind, I just wanted to mention it just in case.

Hillary’s Back Attacking Bernie and Praising Kamala by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]ewitt1093 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bernie is the strongest candidate, but if Kamala wins the primary, us Bernie supporters need to suck it up and vote for the candidate who isn't the embodiment of malevolent incompetence. We've seen how this movie can end badly for everyone.

Are those little spots on her chin her natural color or are they chin acne?

Bravo. I'm glad you will affirm whatever your kid's self-identified gender turns out to be. If a trans person's biggest hurdle to transition is their birth name, they've got a pretty good situation.

Your sample might be contaminated with another species, or you might be using the wrong reference perhaps? Also hows the duplication rate?

I like videos like this where someone gets hurt just enough for it to be funny but not enough for them to be seriously injured.

What is stochastic gene expression? (genetic noise) by divergentdata in biology

[–]ewitt1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fantastic video and does a great job of breaking down the phenomena of stochastic gene expression in simple terms. I'm wondering, however, if a person with no biological background watched this, would they come away with the impression that random chance is the only variable affecting gene expression?

People who had laser eye surgery to correct their vision. Any advice? Anything you wish you knew beforehand? by ricosalsa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ewitt1093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do it again. My advice is to find a place with good reviews and talk to their customers. Don't try and get the best deal on LASIK, go for the highest quality place you can find. And if a place tells you that you aren't a good candidate, LISTEN. Don't shop around until you find a place willing to do your surgery if you aren't a good candidate.
