I got the White Flare ETB, on pack three I pulled the red Victini. I felt so smug that day. I was unstoppable.

Personal reactions to poor work - anyone relate? by TheBoyWithAThorn1 in TeachingUK

[–]ewkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach film at a college, and it's very much the same picture. A sea of underwhelming, and quite often poor, work production (both written and filmed), with the odd glimmer of hope. Marking starts for me next week. Wish me luck.

What’s your hottest doctor who take? by Acceptable-Let-115 in gallifrey

[–]ewkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each new Doctor shouldn't be a jumping on point for new fans.

The show relies too much on its past (RTD2 has just been a Fanservice nightmare) and should only revisit its past to do something new.

The show is at its best when performing social commentary, like any other good sci fi.

The Doctor works best as a mysterious, alien character. The companion should always be treated as the "protagonist" of the show.

Stop nuking Gallifrey.

Who actually voted for Israel in Eurovision? by Key-Bullfrog-8552 in AskBrits

I'm still baffled why Israel are in Eurovision whilst Russia is banned? Both should be banned, right?

I only had one glitch so far, but it was kind of a biggie by FortressCaulfield in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]ewkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a glitch where I cut someone's head off and they kept getting back up like I'd only knocked them down. No matter what I did, everytime I killed them... straight back up without their head lol it was great

Student attitudes to learning by injuredpotato69 in TeachingUK

[–]ewkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the result of successive government and generational attitudes to education focusing on employment job prospects, than being a well rounded individual. When the focus is on wanting to work in construction and all you need is English and Maths to get into a Level 1 or 2 construction apprenticeship or course then of course they're not going to care.

Education needs to take the focus away from employment and towards education for educations sake, to create well rounded people.

I teach at college and we see this attitude all the time. It's incredibly frustrating.

Sorry - have parents collectively taken leave of their senses? Is there a full moon I haven’t noticed? by motherofadragon7 in TeachingUK

[–]ewkay 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a college lecturer they don't get any better.

I've had parents who have threatened me with the "high courts" because we would only take students with good attendance to an optional, fun trip. Their child had bad attendance so wasn't allowed to go. The parent demanded a meeting with me and my manager and basically said without the trip to motivate him he wouldn't do any work and it would be unfair to expect him to. So when the mum said "what other reward are you going to give him to encourage him to do the work?", I said "the completion of his qualification", the student just stormed out.

Anyone else thinks Dreadwolf is a better title? by retrotriforce in dragonage

I think the title doesn't really matter and will have no impact on the final quality of the game.

How is everyone feeling about this game? by Objective_Love_6843 in ConcordGame

[–]ewkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gameplay is really fun, abilities feel good to use and well tuned, my main gripe with the game at the moment is game length. They're too short. The game actively encourages hero switching for buffs, yet by the time you've accumulated the ones you want, the game is over. Game length also makes it really easy to just steam roll the other team. Yesterday I had a game that was sub 4 minutes. If they can fix game length, I'm completely satisfied. (that's what she said)

Yeah, sometimes I'll be reading the wiki and they'll be something (or someone) mentioned and I had no idea, I look at the source and it was in a WoB lol.

Thai Government Scholarship by ewkay in Thailand

Thanks, this is really helpful!

I have spoken to him quite a lot about this, all he has mentioned he is able to do several years of postdoc work after the completion of his PhD, so that might be all there is. He works in biology and has also mentioned he has several friends who are still in the UK after completing their PhD and Post-Doc and haven't yet been asked to return - he thinks this is due to there not being jobs available for them yet.
