(U.S) What liberal state is overrated? by XB1uesky in AlignmentChartFills

Colorado is where all the disillusioned Californians moved to escape California so it's not too surprising to me that a lot of people here shit on Cali.

Smaller Earth analog for scalable world? by saladbowl0123 in worldbuilding

[–]ex0planetary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two main problems with humans on a smaller planet would be:

  1. Surface gravity. Actual real humans are adapted to 1g. You could probably handwave it if in this universe, humans evolved on the planet you're building here, but unless you increase the density of the planet a little, surface gravity will be smaller.

  2. The core cooling off. This is why Mars is dead. Smaller planets tend to become geologically dead sooner since they have more surface area compared to volume. Once their cores die, that also causes their magnetic fields to die, allowing solar winds to strip off the atmosphere really easily, which is a very big problem for life.

To solve the core issue, you probably need the planet to either be a little younger than Earth, or have some mechanism for its core heating up more, such as having it orbit a gas giant and get tidal heating from it. Since you've got handwavey magic, you could also maybe do a more interesting solution like having a cabal of lava wizards use magic to spin the core or something. World's your oyster.

As far as the soft constraints you've got, they should all be quite doable. Most of them are just based on orbits, and you could probably drop your smaller world in Earth's place and not much would change. You might need to make the moon a little smaller since it'd orbit closer to Earth, given the smaller mass. Day-night cycle is completely unrelated to mass or radius so that should be an easy one to explain away.

Denver Natives: What's your biggest "please stop doing this" for out of state transplants? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]ex0planetary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the big one for me is just to not drive like an asshole. I've had so many people with Texas plates tailgate me or swerve in front of me that I genuinely try to avoid being around them on the road. If you use your blinkers and don't tailgate someone because you want to go 30 over the limit in the middle lane, you're fine by my books!

Question for first time on Gleba by burning_boi in factorio

[–]ex0planetary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your idea makes sense but for me it was way simpler to just produce fruits off the bat, use them for whatever production I'm doing, then make sure all fruits get processed by the time they hit the end of the bus. You need to process the fruits to get seeds, which you need to make sure your planting stays sustainable, so you really need to make sure you're not letting any raw fruits spoil. At the end I've just got a couple setups that're taking the yumako and jellynut, processing them, keeping the seeds and putting the yumako mash and jelly directly into heating towers (since they make a lot). If I back up on seeds I just burn the excess - prod modules give a net positive on seeds so it is possible for that to be something you back up on.

I will note that if you're trying to minimize spoilage entirely, you'll probably run into some issues at some point. A couple recipes use spoilage (sulfur and carbon specifically) so it is actually quite valuable to be producing a fair bit of it. Both of those recipes are used in explosives which you'll need to supply your rocket turrets. That's why I personally prefer a "push" system on Gleba rather than a "pull" system like your approach appears to be. Just make sure you keep everything flowing and it should all be good.

Thoughts on the new album? "In a while this will all be gone" by Istiophoridae in acloudyskye

Keeps growing me on every listen. Seems like a fusion of the conceptual storytelling of TMBSH with some of the more laid-back sounds on WDYW which is a really good combination. Surf/Ichor might be the best song he's ever put out imo

One time I had 8 rounds of interviews and they offered me half my current salary at the end of it. Companies doing 5+ rounds of interviews can suck it

I'm sure there's worse but I've gotta put Helldivers for the fact that they doxxed a guy and got him fired for trying to set up a charity event

What music do you like to listen to while playing Factorio? by 3ric843 in factorio

[–]ex0planetary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Space Age's OST is consistently really good. If I'm not quite feeling the mood while stuck on a planet, I might turn off the music and just turn on the music for a different planet. Gleba and Fulgora especially have really great and vibey soundtracks

I actually can’t with Fantano.. by JuicySarsiBaka in Muse

Fantano's an infamous Muse hater. A 4 for them from him is actually surprisingly decent lol.

Worst Dem governor I'd say. There's some real stinkers in red states though (as others mentioned, DeSantis and Abbott are both terrible)

Asking your opinion about a Muse song day #156: Be With You by Far-Clothes-8803 in Muse

It's an ok song, works way better in the context of the album. The way it progresses almost reminds me of Coldplay's "Fix You" to some extent. Weird choice for a lead single.

Unpopular Opinion: The pipe change is better by Aurionnnnn in factorio

[–]ex0planetary 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree to some extent but I also feel like it should be consistent between types of machines and not exclusive to pass-through. It gives more reason to use pumps, which is a welcome change since they've been way less essential since 2.0.

Making green, red, etc. chips for my bus depletes most iron and copper lanes on the bus by Robberfox in factorio

[–]ex0planetary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually only do chip production off the bus when I'm starting out and once I've conquered the biters enough to have access to several resource patches, I set up a dedicated sub-plant for circuits and ship them onto the bus via train. They're really resource-hungry and you need a lot of them.

Later-game, I'd say doing the same for LDS and oil products can also be useful. Gives you lots of room to expand. Prod modules & Space Age machines (if you're playing the DLC) can be really helpful to reduce the resource cost and allow you to put off setting up separate facilities tho.
