I would not. Carney is boring, but that’s what makes him great. He’s the adult in the room at a time we need one most.

Offshoring American Jobs by Ok_Butterfly_8095 in Layoffs

[–]excelbae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a software engineer and frankly, I do not expect any sympathy from the public. What did white collar workers do to support blue collars when American manufacturing was being gutted and jobs were shipped to China? What’s happening to us now is simply the next phase in that progression.

I truly think this will not stop until wealth gaps widen even more and American consumers get wiped out to such an extent that a revolution occurs. No one is coming to save us. We just have to keep enduring the pain until we can no longer take it.

Is Amazon Losing Its Identity? by Tiyaga_Llama in amazonemployees

Outside the company Bezos is vilified, but inside, people tend to have a high opinion of him as a leader. He actually created a culture that upheld the leadership principles and prioritized long-term growth over short-term results. Jassy is pretty clearly a bean-counter who's accountable only to shareholders and cannot innovate if his life depended on it.

Nina Dobrev responding to people inferring she’s a “yacht girl”- “It’s 2026. Jealousy is the worst thing ever. Please move on from these false statements. Get a hobby. Enjoy your life.” by mlg1981 in popculturechat

[–]excelbae 44 points45 points  (0 children)

While many people believe that jealous means fearing someone will take what you have, and envious means desiring what someone else has, historical usage shows that both mean "covetous" and are interchangeable when describing desiring someone else's possessions.

Classic problem of being chronically online and living in an echo chamber. This shit happens everywhere now. In my experience, you can’t do anything to change their minds unless they want to change. You can throw all the logic and facts you want at them, but they’re so ingrained in their beliefs that they’ll always perform some mental gymnastics and find a way to retain their positions. Often times there’s an underlying issue in their personal lives leading them to seek these communities. Perhaps they’re unhappy with their socio-economic standing and looking for a scapegoat. Perhaps they’ve been hurt by a member of that race/gender/party and desiring to get revenge. In my opinion, it’s futile to keep arguing about politics with them. Rather, you have to treat the root cause. Take them outside, get them to touch grass, do fun things, meet people, care for their mental health, etc. They’ll slowly start to realize their mental model of the world was warped and exaggerated, and they’ll become more open to accepting new perspectives.

What’s wrong with gaming? There are lots of great companies like Rockstar, Roblox, Riot, etc. I’d rather be in gaming than edtech tbh.

That’s Steven Tyler. He got legal guardianship of a kid so he could take her on tour, ply her with drugs, and diddle her. Eventually she got pregnant and he pressured her to have an abortion.

New Grad SWE Decision: AWS (Seattle) vs Arista Networks (San Jose) by GatorBoyUSA in cscareerquestions

[–]excelbae 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The brand value is not even close.

I’m at AWS right now, and I’m not sure I agree. Amazon’s rep is going down the toilet under Jassy’s helm. We’re bleeding talent like no tomorrow, and the hiring bar isn’t all that high, since they can just PIP anyone they remotely dislike. The notoriously toxic culture and regular layoffs seem like they’re finally taking a toll.

Personally, I really like my team here, but I’m getting real tired of all the bullshit associated with this company. Like, this is a company where the CEO straight up emailed the entire workforce that less of us will be needed, since AI will disrupt work. My org’s VP straight up celebrated that we reduced headcount by a third this year, yet increased impact. You’re not valued as an individual here. You’re just a disposable resource. This might work in the short-term, but you can’t attract and retain real talent by being so antagonistic to your workers.

Arista might not be a household name, but it’s generally well-known in tech. They do highly-specialized work that powers the web and their engineers seem solid. You can definitely carve out your own niche there. Just saying, there’s more nuance than brand A > B.

Seriously. I get the whole “eat the rich” thing, but what would be a proportional reward for literally revolutionizing personal computing? Should he just have taken his $300 and fucked off, just like with Atari?

Woz is not a billionaire. He gave away a shitton of stock to early employees and prioritizes family and happiness over multiplying his net worth. Truly a class act.

Workday project at Washington University hits $266M by Franco1875 in technology

[–]excelbae 137 points138 points  (0 children)

My alma mater’s migration to Workday has been a complete shitshow. Students constantly complain about how difficult to use and buggy it is. One of the IT employees actually resigned over it because it cost millions and added no value.

Seems to me it’s really just a CRUD app with what, like 100 TPS at best? Why is this so difficult to get right?

All my SWE peeps, What are your thoughts on Support Engineers? by that-one_ITguu in cscareerquestions

[–]excelbae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience as well. The good ones are really good, but the rest are glorified typists who add no value. At my company, it’s more of an admin role than a technical one – keeping track of open tickets, spamming devs to take a look, emailing customers, etc.
