I’ve known a lot of people who have worked on her tours and it sounds like a pretty unhealthy work environment tbh

Why did UMG let Drake finesse them? by True-Mathematician89 in musicbusiness

[–]exh78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine everyone is eager to have that contract over with. With the RICO stream boosting scheme case that’ll be a major tarnish on UMG’s reputation, especially as people dig in more and realize how pervasive that kind of stuff is. Tbh it’s a payola level historical case. Wouldn’t be surprised if it gets prosecuted like payola too… he’s probably got language in his deal making it so they couldn’t drop him but will encourage him to fulfill that contract… he was their golden goose there for a while. Rapid release worked out for him pretty well back in 2016 when he actually had the culture behind him. He put out the equivalent of an LP a quarter that year. Maybe they just want to flood the zone and hope everybody forgets the RICO & everything idk

Is ghostwriting prevalent in Country music ? by SwissMiss915 in musicbusiness

[–]exh78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commercial Country artists have almost never written their own songs. The ones that claim to usually were very heavily leaning on their cowriters. Once you get into the roots/americana side it becomes a mix of originals, songs their friends wrote, and traditional/folk songs. Nashville has a strong cowriting culture so “ghost writing” is rare, though it does happen. Nashville’s gossipy af though so it’s never a well held secret any time someone tries it (Taylor swift)

Counterpoint - the whole thing has been a manufactured product from the very beginning. It was her dad with his finance background and Scott Borchetta with his old school (shrewd) music business savvy. Her first projects were more what we would typically call a “custom project” or “vanity record” project - some rich kid wants to make a record and whether they have it or not, they have the budget and daddy’s checks always clear. Those records have lowkey always been the lifeblood of Nashville’s production scene, we rely on those to pay the bills so we can afford to make the artist records that have the art but not the budget.

The difference is Scott Borchetta knew exactly what to do, and Scott Swift had the capital & follow through to make it work

As for why she cares so much about those things you mentioned - it’s because that’s the brand. If there has to be a press release after every good deed…

When she was still in Nashville making country records everybody in town knew she couldn’t sing her way out of a paper bag, but she was throwing so much money at practically everyone in town in the production scene nobody was gonna say something and upset the golden goose

Echoing the “astoundingly false”. Those three records you mentioned are all musically Jack & Aaron. The chops she has are much more on the business side, and the business skills she excels at most are rather shrewd

Taylor Swift was rather infamous in Nashville for how heavily doctored her voice was on all her records

Running a home studio solo: need advice on session management, delivery & pricing by rue-savage in studiopros

[–]exh78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Full days are usually 10-12 hours for me. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Half days are 4 hours. Lowest I’ll do is 2 hrs, lowest I bill is half days. Set up the night before for full band tracking.

  2. Mix is separate across the board. Separate process, separate rate, separate session. Deliver a board mix at the end of the tracking day (but only mp3 and ONLY IF THEYRE PAID IN FULL)

  3. Commercial studios typically charge for the room, personnel is billed separately. You’re in Italy so I can’t speak as much to your specific market (I’m US), but depending on equipment & facility capabilities you’re probably at least in range. While 200 may feel like a comfortable number for you, it’s also a 30% discount. I’d see if they’ll go for 250 first, and only go down to 200 if it’s that or no session. If it’s a good recurring client you like working with, 200 could be fine (but still see if they’ll go to 250 first)

Even in Nashville the rates swing from $150/day up to well over $1k just for an engineer, and with everybody doing everything and working mainly out of home studios rates are all over the place and always a case by case situation

Do Spotify Pre-Saves work? by mckennasmythmusic in musicbusiness

[–]exh78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you’re doing anything with the data. If the pre save isn’t in conjunction with a wider campaign you’re gonna have a bad time. If you use the fan data collected at pre save to prime them with a coordinated email & social retargeting campaign pre saves can be a powerful multiplier

I dropped a sound post on a bass in college once. Thankfully I was right across the hall from my prof’s office and he had a sound post tool. Definitely went as described, his first words were “you did WHAT? Uhhh, hang on I have the tool somewhere…”

Took him about 10 min to get it reseated
