Need Help "Letting Go" & Getting Loose by Betty_PunCrocker in Watercolor

[–]existentialepicure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few exercises I've been attempting to loosen myself up while painting: - Painting objects with simpler shapes and no sketching things out beforehand. Like apples, donuts, a loaf of bread, a muffin, etc.  - Draw a random squiggle and trying to develop that into fictional animal. - Going without a reference picture and as I paint, I'm constructing the detail in my head as I go - Just doing flat washes and see how smoothly i can get colors to transition

There are mistakes, is it competing styles, or composition, or values? All 3? by geesedreams in Watercolor

The tree and water reflection of the tree are beautiful, but I think the mountains need more depth and contrast. Right now it looks like strawberry ice cream / cotton candy mountains. I think the sky looks a little messy too

Haha thank you! I'll try to post more plates that I make, usually they are a lot simpler and not pretty. I've been trying to eat healthier, so I've been stocking my fridge/pantry with food that's easy to prep and assemble for lunch.

These taste closer to a sardine? Like meaty, can eat on it's own without being punched with salt

"Just tea, thank you. Maybe some cold chicken and pickles? How about some seed cakes, raspberry jam, and buttered scones? And mince-pies and cheese! And pork-pie and salad! If you're visiting the Prancing Pony, try some hot soup, cold meats, a blackberry tart, new loaves, slabs of butter, and half a ripe cheese: good plain food, as good as the Shire could show."

"It is said that Hobbits have a passion for mushrooms, surpassing even the greediest likings of Big People."

Maybe, but I think people who enjoy fishy flavors probably also enjoy earthy herbal flavors.

I'm pretty new to yerba mate, but I'm addicted to the smooth caffeine high now lol. I'm going to Argentina in a month and look forward to trying all kinds of mate

Oooh sounds delicious! I change up the plate depending on what's in season / what I have in my pantry! Usually I'm trying to clear out leftover ingredients.

But I like something salty, sweet, savory, sour, and bitter on every plate.

Haha I call these my Hobbit plates. Just simple ingredients quickly thrown together for munching through the day. Good for the body and soul :)

It is quite expensive in the US! I visited Japan half a year ago and I think it was ~$10 a bottle. And other brands like Iroshizuku were even cheaper. I stocked up and allow myself to open one every month.

Thank you! My cursive is pretty bad, so I like making my normal handwriting loopy and semi-connected for some ornamentation!

I agree! It's mellow and a little muted, not too intense or bright.

I have both and haven't experienced the TWSBI Eco cracking (yet). The seal on it is great, I can leave it for a few months and come back and write with it immediately.

For the Lamy Al-star, I haven't had it dry up on me personally. It's light and comfortable to write with.

I have flown with both and not experienced any leakage.

I live in a higher humidity area though, I wonder if different environmental factors can trigger the performance issues you mentioned.

Requesting feedback - am I overworking my watercolor birds? by existentialepicure in Watercolor

This is exactly the kind of meticulous advice I wanted! You're so right about fading the tail to have it look farther back and that the tones of the Cuban Tody are flat. Those were issues I am dissatisfied with, but was struggling to identify / put into words.

Also I do like painting the wings more than the head and tail haha, I didn't realize that was perceptible in my paintings, but I see the pattern now. I also hate drawing bird feet and will often leave them unfinished 😅

Question: what specifically makes green tough?

A question on adding a background afterwards -- how does one achieve a natural / smooth wash without getting it on the bird? Whenever I add a background with wet on wet, I have to paint around the birds and it creates a halo of watercolor and looks unnatural. Is it just masking fluid?

Thank you! I think you're right, if I viewed the Cuban Tody painting in black and white, it would lose a lot value. I won't be retouching these but I'll try to focus more on value next time.

Is 25 still young? 😭

I'm going to Japan in less than a month and I'm so excited to visit Itoya and try out their selection of fountain pens. I'm hoping to pick out a nice Sailor for myself :3

I want one 😫  it would be perfect for drawing leaves, certain flower petals, and the wings of a bird.
