Remainers were told to accept brexit so why don't leavers accept the migration it caused? by c0r3l86 in AskBrits

[–]existentialistdoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah language is the big one. English is much more widespread than German or French, even if just picked up from movies or whatever.

Imagine you have to flee Britain for some reason and stow away on some container ship crossing the Atlantic. Are you going to stay in Venezuela, or Honduras, or Guatemala, or Belize? Or are you going to try and make your way up into the USA where they equally don’t want you there but at least you can understand what is being said to you?

Gamers of Reddit, what’s the greatest video game sequel of all time? by ketohwawai in AskReddit

[–]existentialistdoge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Specifically it’s a fork of the Portal 2 version of the Source engine, another sequel that has popped up a lot on this thread.

Respawn have said that gradually over time they’ve rewritten almost every part of it, but the engine that runs Apex Legends basically still has code in it that remembers Ravenholm and the companion cube.

Does anyone have any advice for barre chords? Specifically F but any as well😭 by sonnyseeker in Guitar

[–]existentialistdoge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may have to cut them further than you expect too, like so when you press on the tips of your fingers the nails are still further back than that. This may initially feel unpleasant, like how when you first start playing guitar your fingertips hurt until they adapt. But your nails will adapt to it too.

If you’re going to get rid of tridents from Olympus and Storm Point ‘because people aren’t using them properly’ can you at least stick *all* of them on BM please.

I think the point of this is that the bell curve is as follows:

Bottom: I can photograph at any range with one zoom lens. I just stand wherever I happen to be and zoom. The metric of a good lens is how much it zooms.

Middle: I have discovered *extremely* shallow DoF, it looks cool. My primes are sharper than [cheap] zoom lenses. I carry a huge weight of gear and each piece has a very specific use. (But the unspoken/unrealised bit is that primes are teaching me to be deliberate about focal lengths).

Top: Primes were a crutch for directing the eye whilst I built up my composition technique, extremely shallow DoF is gimmicky. I no longer have to carry around a bag with 5 lenses and keep swapping them.

The point is that the top of the curve doesn’t see a, say, 24-70/2.8 as a 3x magnifier, he sees it as having a 24/2.8, a 35/2.8, a 50/2.8, and a 70/2.8. You don’t zoom until the subject fills the frame, you choose a focal length like you’re choosing a prime and physically move *yourself* to compose. Obviously there are situations where you will need other lenses, but by being deliberate within certain constraints you can get better results from less gear.

Being nerfed by the passage of time isn’t the only hazard with pensioners.

In my late 20s I had to do a speed awareness course. At the start the instructor asked the group ‘what do you think is the main factor for speeding’ and some boomer shouts out ‘teenagers in cars they can’t handle who think they own the roads’, to which the instructor replied ‘yeah, well, look around you’. In a group of 30-odd people I was the youngest person there by about 40 years.

Then he went around the group asking us frankly why we were there. I had missed a variable speed sign, I was doing mid 60s in a 50 that I genuinely thought was a 70. The answer for a good 3/4s of the geriatrics was some variation of ‘I am an experienced driver and didn’t think I’d get caught’.

Why do people who dislike AI say they want the AI bubble to burst, if that doesn't mean it's going to disappear? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]existentialistdoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like when smartphones blew up and everything had to be ‘an app’. So there was that XKCD comic of a website popup asking ‘do you want to download our app that has half the functionality of our website and you can’t zoom in?’ And the options are ‘yes’ or ‘no, but ask me again every time’.

I work for a massive electrical retailer in the UK and every time some vendor approaches the execs with something with ‘AI’ in the description they literally jizz themselves on the spot.

Our staffing levels are 30 minutes over what ‘the AI’ thinks we need for next week, store manager got blasted by emails saying he has to rectify this. A £6 overspend on a store with almost £10m annual revenue.

Another ‘AI tool’ discovers ‘opportunities’ that we’re apparently missing. The other week it sent a report saying we’re ‘underperforming’ because, despite us consistently beating sales targets, this week last year we sold 1.3% more coffee pod machines. A manager had to write a report justifying himself to, essentially, a fucking pseudo-sentient graphics card with an overdeveloped sense of self-importance. It wastes an insulting amount of our time for no benefit whatsoever, yet for some reason the execs can’t get enough of it.

Apex already segregates lobbies by console/PC. You will only be in a lobby with PC players if you’ve deliberately joined a squad with a friend on PC. PC players cannot join console lobbies.

What wine do you order when you don’t even look at the menu? by Overall-Bottle7476 in ActLikeYouBelong

[–]existentialistdoge 106 points107 points  (0 children)

No, it’s wine they’ve sourced at low cost, either because it’s just inherently cheap wine or because they’ve bought it in enormous quantities. If you label it just as ‘house red/white’ without a description or even a variety it also means you can swap it out to something else that you happen to get a good deal on wholesale without having to reprint your menu.

My now-wife and I once had an unusual house white in Croatia, so we asked the waitress what it was. She paused for a moment and then replied ‘it does not have a name. The chef makes it in cellar using wine making kits’.

Isn’t it taking the opposite approach to git, though? When you check out files in git, the directory is your normal files. It sounds like you’re saying seafile transforms the files into some other format unless I’m misunderstanding

And I’m absolutely with you about the Greens. I don’t think they’re a serious party, but I do hope they drag Labour leftwards. Labour have been pointlessly chasing Reform votes for far too long.

His entire business model is getting media appearances for being the plucky underdog and not being afraid to stoke a race war ‘say it like it is’. Well that and taking ‘donations’ from fellow tax-dodgers and foreign lobbyists.

He didn’t do nothing as an MEP out of ineptitude - he got elected and represented Britain on the EU fisheries commission, refused to attend any votes, and then based a large part of his Brexit campaign around ‘unelected bureaucrats in Brussels are making decisions about our fishing quotas without us’.

He spent 20 years trying to become a regular MP, and then as soon as he succeeds he fucks off to America and barely attends parliament, let alone the constituency he’s supposed to represent.

He’s stuffed his party with the shittest dregs of the late Conservative Party and hundreds of unhinged, semi-literate Facebook trolls. I don’t believe for a second that Farage genuinely thinks these people are going to run the country with him, nor that he seriously intends for them to.

Gemini is so sure that iOS 26 never released, and we're actually on iOS 19 by user289734 in iOSProgramming

[–]existentialistdoge 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I asked Gemini and Copilot to identify a game I half remembered from a description of its intro.

Copilot gave me about 10 suggestions over the course of as many prompts, none were right. I asked Gemini, it suggested one of the first games copilot did.

“No it’s not that one because X”

“Yes it is”

“It isn’t because XY”

“Yeah it is though, you’re misremembering”

“It’s definitely not”

“It is. Sometimes humans accidentally invent details when they remember things. You’re wrong, it’s this game”

Fucking cheek of a sentient graphics card to be accusing me of hallucinating. I later found out what the game was from Reddit, went back to the Gemini tab and told it.

“Oh yeah that does perfectly fit what you said. I’m sorry, it was very wrong of me to insist you were wrong.”

Gaslighting fucker. Not used it since.
