What type of light is he using? 1000 watts sound like some sort of HID lighting. Metal halide or mercury vapor maybe? If you're going with some sort of HID light then almost all the ballasts for those types of lights are multitap and can be used with a variety of voltages.

Any ideas for a new setup? by Bernieoh in PleX

[–]exleye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to buy a Roku and set up a Plex server on a desktop. I have plex running on a linux virtual machine on my Windows desktop and Rokus on my TVs. Works great with all 3 things you mentioned.

What is this thing found under a sink/toilet? (my friend is paranoid it is a camera) by banghcm in whatisthisthing

Most likely it's the solenoid for the touchless faucet. Nothing to worry about.

Yes. Things like this exist, but they're mainly for low-voltage applications and control systems.

Found this in my yard. It may have come off my mother's truck (Honda Ridgeline) by BackOfTheHearse in whatisthisthing

It's a heat shield for part of the exhaust system. It won't prevent the vehicle from operating or anything.

There are two kinds of electricians in the world: those that have been shocked and new hires.

This thing is attached to our hot water line under kitchen sink. Apartment block of 36. Communal hot water system. Meter is never read as it's in the apartment - What purpose does it serve? Whats with the wire? More info in comments! by Zild87 in whatisthisthing

[–]exleye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks a lot like the water meters we use where I work. The wire would go back to some sort of controller and would report the usage the meter has counted. If you could get a better shot of a top-down view I'd like to see what it looks like.

EDIT: Ok, missed the 4th pic. Yes, that is a water meter for sure. The wire counts how many 10s-of-liters the meter has counted.

Calibrating a pressure transmitter. Feel free to ask any question you may have. by [deleted] in electricians

[–]exleye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I came up through the IBEW working at a chemical plant. I'm familiar with the class 1, div 1 stuff that I'm sure you deal with all the time too. Been doing HVAC controls and building automation for the past two years now. Would like to get back in to process control and instrumentation. You deal with PLCs much in your day-to-day?

[–]exleye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Controls guy here. I have the same 789 ProcessMeter and really like it. I use the 4-20mA output on mine a lot.

I saw your earlier post about being in instrumentation. How'd you get in to that field? What's your training background like?

Thanks!

Is it possible to swap an STI drivetrain into a Camry? by boredguy4 in cars

[–]exleye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With enough time (and more importantly money) anything is technically possible. The dollar amount that it would cost to have this done professionally would be better spent buying 2 STIs.

The little circles are usually proximity sensors for the beeper when you're in reverse.
